  1. Apple pie (although would rather have apple strudel) but rhubarb crumble
  2. My uncle died in July at 46. He was a personal trainer and an ultra runner - organised (and ran until recently) the West Highland Way race - 95 miles in 36 hours. He had a heart attack while on a training jaunt up Lochnagar. Totally unexpected and threw quite a few of his family and friends for a loop.
  3. I saw a report earlier this month on Chateau Tooting ::o They're a co-operative which collect grapes from members and help turn it into wine. Might be worth looking into if you have vines...

If you go to Southwark's website, there's a link called Report it which has an option for reporting Street and Traffic issues. There's a form near the bottom of the page for street and road surface issues - I'd suggest filling that one in and seeing what happens.
  5. It was fun - and some serious picnics going on! Agreed it was chilly towards the end but pretty well organised. Would have been nice if Southwark had topped up the loos with loo-roll etc but other than that really well organised - and easy to get in/out. My vote if they were doing cheesy 80s movie for next year was Top Gun or When Harry Met Sally.
  6. The End of the Affair has Deborah Kerr and is set in London but no idea if there's a scene at the Ritz in it
  7. I'm sure the kids today work just as hard at them as kids did years ago - but the emphasis on continuous course work and assessment rather than one-off exams, makes it easier to get higher marks since you can simply redo assignments and discard your lower marks. And there's a different focus on the skills required - now you can do Maths with a laptop to draw your graphs rather than a scientific calculator or a slide rule. Plus, I believe some GCSE syllabus have removed things that were standard (e.g. differential equations which can be tricky) and put them into the A level syllabus instead. You can't really say that we'll put someone with a A grade from years ago up against someone who has just got one though - the old sod won't have studied or looked at the subject from years. When my younger sister did her Maths exam and wanted help, I was useless despite having got a B a few years beforehand. One thing that has dramatically declined, at least if the new starters at work are anything to go by, is the standard of basic English and arithmetic. I know teachers who can't use apostrophes so heaven help the kids that they're teaching.
  8. You need one of these Ergostools. You're still on the ground so don't annoy anyone but gives you some support. What kind of food was at the Pavilion? Debating whether to picnic or eat there
  9. Nope. If you don't do any other exercise and only ever wear high high heels, then you might notice aching calves the first time you wear them for any length of time. Otherwise, no. Having said that, once you get used to the slightly rough toe-pole, they are ridiculously comfortable. Kinda like wearing slippers but as flip flops. I got a pair last year and then a pair of the bronze sequinned ones (that go with more) to wear as regular summer shoes - and I'll be sad when I have to switch to 'sensible' shoes. However, I suspect the tri-weekly gym sessions have more effect on my butt than the Fit Flops :(
  10. Might have been inconsiderate guests rather than them - if they haven't smoked outside til now. I'd have a chat with them and let them know. Even if you can get to the point that if you're on night shifts, they move their playing to a point when you're not sleeping, it would be a start. I'd suggest having the chat sooner rather than later - that way you can take a pot-plant/wine to welcome them and then drop in the bit about the guitar so it doesn't appear that you're only saying hello to berate them.
  11. I think System Profiler (in Utilities) can tell you how many charge cycles you've gone through. Assuming that you've also tried the recalibrations that Apple advise doing regularly? 45-90 minutes does sound particularly short though unless you're doing something that's massively HD, optical drive and processor intensive. I know the usage time remaining can drop suddenly (not so sure on just %) since it's based on what you're currently doing. So if you are just online reading websites, then it might be 50% but if you then start burning DVDs while watching streaming Flash video, it will drop. Hope the Genius Bar manage to sort it out for you. I had a Macbook where the battery went bad (stopped accepting any charge) about 6 months in and they were able to just swap it out for me.
  12. I'm one of those swelling the numbers in SE23... :-$
  13. I had to have a burglar alarm fitted last year and was recommended to go with the wired version by a family friend who is in the security business (albeit in Scotland so wasn't going to get the job). He had a variety of reasons which I can't recall in detail unfortunately but made sense at the time. I got mine fitted by Classic Security Systems who are based in Dulwich and it was surprisingly reasonable including a yearly checkup.
  14. MrBen Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Imagine if you could link the TFL route database > to a new real time journey planner that worked off > the GPS feature on your iphone/mobile. I've got an app on my iPhone which can use your current location to figure out where the next bus to wherever you type in is. V v useful... although subject to the usual Journey Planner oddities still.
  15. When Harry Met Sally is a good one Little Miss Sunshine always makes me smile too
  16. Are they 'Bookcrossing' labelled or just entirely anonymous? Might see if I have any that I could leave out since I'm in that neck of the woods.
  17. I think the Capitol in Forest Hill had sat empty for some time before Wetherspoon's spent some cash on it and opened it up again. And I do believe there was some discussion on se23.com about whether it was a good idea and how people would much rather it was a cinema - even though I don't believe there was any interest back then from any cinema group. Bits of the old cinema are still there though - occasionally, the Capitol takes 'tours' up to the balcony to the old projection room and fold-up seats. However, presumably the church's offer was better than the cinema company's to Gala - and there's no guarantee that even if change of use isn't agreed, that the church won't just hang onto the building while they tweak the application every few months. Is being used as a church better than being empty and falling into disrepair? Having said that I have a definite soft spot for old cinemas and since I'm far more likely to use a cinema than a church, I'd like to see the campaign succeed. There are lots of large but less interesting buildings that can house congregations.
  18. Starmix, what would you do if someone saw you pick up a dropped wallet and hunt through it. Would your behaviour change if it was being 'judged' by those around? Just curious... The Honesty Lab has some interesting questions on it about how honest we all really are. I'd consider myself pretty honest but found myself questioning some of my answers on it. If I found anything valuable, I'd hand it in to the police, the people behind the bar etc. I have some belief in karma - and hey, if we all did that, then if we did lose something, wouldn't it be nice to think we had a good chance of getting it back? After all, you've never got any idea of the circumstances of the person who lost the money/item (aside from being unfortunate) and they might need it a lot more than you do. A shoot-em-up game over the family groceries...
  19. If the bus just looped round to use the existing 63 terminus then what happens to those who want to get on at Honor Oak and go back to ED? They'd have to get off and move to the one at the front? That might cause some confusion and irritation itself. And still no answer on the night bus part of the route? Would. The Honor Oak spur just stop at midnight?
  20. Depending on the time you need to go, there are now some direct trains from Denmark Hill to Luton Airport Parkway which might be the quickest way (about an hour IIRC)
  21. Sounds good - access is dreadful for the amount of people who use it at rush hour. Particularly when they announce a platform change a minute before the train is due - with other trains arriving at the same time so the stairs are so congested that you can't get to the new platform.
  22. Seems like a sensible idea during the day but what happens when it turns into the N63 and the route is extended to Crystal Palace? Also, not entirely sure where you'd put a bus stand near Honor Oak Station?
  23. It can vary enormously - at the moment, it's not bad since the schools are finishing but after September, the time may double. I only stay on the South Circular until the P4 turns into Dulwich Village but just that bit from the Harvester to the Gallery Road can take anything from a minute to 10 minutes. I have a friend who lives in Colliers Wood and occasionally does the commute if she's stayed over - it usually takes her 70-80mins at that time of day to make it from near the Harvester to home.
  24. How late will they play now that there's lights and a roof? To the bitter end regardless?
  25. I'd agree except that I got on a train to Victoria on Thursday morning from Denmark Hill at around 8.15am and didn't get a card at the station or on a train so how many were they handing out and at what times. I've had my survey code and filled it in accordingly. I filled in one for my trip into London and one for the trip back.
