Taper - I am Chair of The Dulwich Hamlet Supporters' Trust, which is completely independent of the club, so only know the broad position. Basically, the pure football side of Club loses money - just like every non-league club nowadays. At a recent public meeting the club estimated the losses at more than ?2,000 a week. The Club then attempts to offset these losses with income from the Health Club, the bar (including functions) and the Greendales artificial pitches. In today's Southwark News there is an article on the subject in which Councillor Barber and Dulwich Hamlet's owner Nick McCormack are both quoted. The latter is quoted as saying "If we lost the licence, we might as well close down. But I don't think our licence will be revoked. They will be looking at our hours, our security and our CCTV and there may be certain conditions put on us. But we understand that the police have recommended this after the tragic incident". I obviously have an interest the club not losing one of its income streams , but would echo the posts that suggest it would be disproportionate for the club to lose its licence over this (rather than have conditions put on it). As the Southwark News mentions, the violence was 'sparked by a group of teenagers from outside the local area who gate-crashed the event'.
  2. You could try Hoopers on Ivanhoe Road. Nick the barman is a QPR fan and there are three screens - so I'd be surprised if it weren't on in the back bar at least (Plus they serve ace beers)
  3. This press report refers to both http://www.mirror.co.uk/news/top-stories/2011/01/30/one-teenager-stabbed-to-death-and-another-shot-after-london-birthday-party-fight-115875-22884890/
  4. Heber open today 9.30 - 2.00pm. Parent text message on the way.
  5. The Headteacher has confirmed that Heber will be closed today. Unfortunately there is currently a technical problem with the text messaging service to parents which they are trying to sort out.
  6. Mr Block (Headteacher) has confirmed that Heber is planning to open as usual. Parents will be texted if this changes.
  7. Yes it was a false alarm - all checked out by the Fire Brigade. Heber will be open as usual tomorrow.
  8. Dear Mlteenie, I think that it is mine. I have pm'd you. Thank you very much, Eddie
  9. Would add my concern to that expressed by Miacis. Was crossing the road at this junction with my 2 children today (11 and 9) and it's really tricky. Because the traffic comes down LL on the 'wrong' side, I ended up having to grab my older one from the path of an oncoming car because he only looked the obvious way down the road and started to step out. It shook me up, particularly because he's out on his own more frequently now.
  10. It's good to hear that people enjoyed it so much. Likewise I converted from watching higher level football after moving here in the late 90s - it's suprising how many people do so, once they 'discover' it and give it a try. There are certainly no glory hunters (!) just locals - or people who used to be locals - enjoying the football and a few beers. Just to emphasise the point on prices - the club have cut admission by 25% this season (from ?8 to ?6) which I think brings it much more into line with what I would say is good value for the quality of football played. Over 60s and 12-16 year olds are just ?2 and accompanied children under 12 are free. Season tickets are also cheap as chips. Details are on the link below (ignore the 'ticketing page on the website which has the old prices). http://www.dulwichhamletfc.co.uk/news-story.php?ID=701 In case people don't know, the club were one of the great teams of amateur football's golden age from the 1920s to 1950s attracting five figure crowds to a massive ground where Sainsbury's now is - the history page from the club's website below may be of interest to those who would like to know more. http://www.dulwichhamletfc.co.uk/history.php Hopefully with more local support they can have a brighter future too.
  11. I was worried about the same thing with my daughter. I don't think Upper Circle is too far away but I think an aisle seat is a good idea - and suggest not the front row (or you'll be fretting about having to hang over the edge). Rather than book online, I'd also recommend ringing the box office and explaining that you're taking a child so that they can find you good seats. My daughter went to see Sound of Music when she was 6 (present from my mum) and it worked fine to be up high - you might want to take a cushion or make sure you have some coats to sit on just in case.

I too don't mind political leaflets as long as they don't contain complete porkies. Biggest factual whopper spotted so far came from LDs last week which published the results of polls taken after the second leaders deabate and prominently quoted the scores from the Times as Clegg 49%, Cameron 34% Brown 17%. The actual result of the Times/Populus poll was Cameron 37%, Clegg 36%, Brown 27%. These scores are shown at the end of the attached link (hopefully)- as you can see, none of the polls quoted are anywhere near the LD numbers. Perhaps not so squeaky clean? http://timesonline.typepad.com/election10/2010/04/poll-watch-five-polls-so-won-the-second-leaders-debate.html#more
  13. I imagine that schools will vary depending on where their staff live.
  14. Yes - Heber definitely having to close today. Parents being notified via new text service.
  15. Yes - thanks again to the organizers for all their hard work. Excellent event and lots of fun was had by all !
  16. On a completely different footballing planet, there's an opportunity to watch live local non-league football for FREE on Tuesday night (17th) when Dulwich Hamlet give free admission to their league match in aid of comic relief. More details have just been posted in the 'What's On' section of this forum.
  17. The Headteacher has just confirmed the school will be open today.
  18. I agree about the website but I'm afraid this kind of website is firewalled from inside school so that wouldn't be an option, alba.
  19. Having spoken to the Headteacher this evening, he has confirmed that we should be back to normal in the morning.
  20. Confirmation that Heber is closed again today, Tuesday
  21. Just to say that Heber is definitely closed today - the majority of staff are unable to get in. Schools make their own decision, though so others may be better off.
  22. I'm only an fairly irregular user of this service, and would obviously prefer its retention in a perfect world. However all service companies adjust what they provide if there is a better use of limited resources - presumably in this instance, train slots through East Croydon. I expect that passenger group representatives would have seen the evidence that there are wider benefits for a greater number of people compared with users on our line having to change trains at Selhurst (only a four minute wait southbound I notice by the way). I accept it would be nice to know what this evidence is, though. Furthermore, (looking at the Department for Transport consultation document on the specification for the new franchise), this service pattern appears to be repeated going forward. Given that this was apparently drawn up "woking closely with TfL", it doesn't appear that they disagree with what's happening or are going to ride to the rescue either. Overall, things like rail timetables do have to change and develop over time, otherwise we'd all have the same service pattern from ages ago. And such changes need not all be bad news. For example, I think I'm right in saying (though perhaps Eileen can confirm?) that from March next year, the Blackfriars trains from Nunhead, Peckham Rye and Denmark Hill will run through Blackfriars to City Thameslink, Farringdon, St Pancras International and beyond. So there can be positive as negative changes.
  23. Whilst I agree there's no way it will be all ticket, it is supposed to be Charlton's first team turning up. This was part of the deal that took Chris Dickson to the Valley in 2007 - also Alan Pardew played for Dulwich before he turned professional, so hopefully will be inclined to bring a strong team. It is listed as a first team match on the Charlton website.

Indeed part of the > Chris Dickson deal. > A friendly against Arsenal academy the following > Saturday which should be good too Unfortunately I understand the Arsenal Academy game scheduled for 2nd August is now off. It is possible they may find a new date for it. Also off is the match against Fisher on 23rd July because the pitch will not be ready. So therefore only two home friendlies are still on at present - Charlton on Wednesday 30th July and Sutton on Tuesday 5th August (both 7.45 kick-offs).
