I was simply choosing a high profile illustration of the Laffer Curve in action - I don't really give much of a shite about Depardieu! It doesn't require every talented technician, engineer, creative or high earner to leave a country or to reduce personal productivity to have a huge impact on an economy - we measure growth or recession in small single percentage points, but the social impact is massive. For every example of an individual like Depardieu that takes a hike, there will be examples of people who stay; in themselves they're not interesting, it's the big picture that counts.

I don't really agree LM, although those criteria have the appearance of qualitative measures, they're actually tangible economic factors in increased productivity (shorter commutes) and untapped labour resource (pressure at London Bridge limiting capacity for human resource exploitation and residential land usage). The problem is that both those factors have a smaller impact than urban redevelopment for industry and commerce. Recent developments of the DLR, Jubilee Line and the projected NL extension are a reflection of that. Hence to build a tube to ED, you have to change the nature of ED (something which nobody appears to be interested in). I don't think that a Southwark/Lewisham tube extension will gain planning prominence unless that factor can be proven - and Lewisham has a better case to make (which is why they're further along the 'track' in terms of a coherent proposal).
-
I think you'll be pretty safe Quids - lots of arguments on here about how a local tube might make people more comfortable and they could manage the damage. No case yet for actually putting one in (that's not to say that there isn't one, I just haven't seen it yet). I think it's misguided to imagine you can vote for a tube - there has to be a logical economic justification. Southwark have probably looked at it and realized there isn't one.

Was it in the lounge? I'm guessing a post about a stall in Peckham may not apply to any other section - as it's not in ED and it doesn't seem to be a business with an ED trading address? Did it comply with the rules?

I'm not an admin sae28, but usually it's for a breach of forum rules. The two most likely answers are that either it wasn't in the right section (ED business and trades) or it didn't comply with the rules as listed in the first post in that section. I'm guessing if you're mobile that one possible breach is that you may not have included a trading address in East Dulwich? It clearly creates challenges if you're mobile, but those rules are set for the benefit of all.

Well that's very true Quids. Depardieu is a good example of diminshing returns of taxation predicted by the Laffer Curve - he was generating much needed overseas income to the French economy, but by overtaxing him he stopped contributing (in his case by leaving, but in other cases by reducing productivity). You cannot simply 'redistribute wealth' to sustain public services. Old Marxist arguments about the exploited working classes don't even support a moral case for it when so much of the economy is driven by small business.

So let me get this straight: rice cakes are free of VAT unless you turn them into confectionery right? There doesn't seem to be anything wrong with that? Also in your list are inedible decorations - erm... You're annoyed about bits of plastic not being classed as food?

I don't imagine that a transport system like this is sensible if all it's intended to do is make sure there's an empty seat for every traveller - it's got to deliver some greater benefit than that. The obvious benefit is unexploited resource - residential or industrial land. Putting up local house prices is not included in that 'unexploited resource' nor is rising house prices wealth generation (it only creates more debt). I have no doubt that local councillors of all colours will pursue this vote-winning campaign with great enthusiasm, but I don't think there's a chance in hell of winning it until there's a vast tract of unexploited resource exposed at the heart of the ED community.

I'm not sure that's helpful is it Burbage? As the report states, there is insufficient evidence to draw any conclusion. Secondly, even if it concluded that high noise levels impact upon children there is no immediate actionable solution regarding Heathrow because of capacity and cost issues. You could use it to argue that any new airports be built in low population areas, but in general they are anyway.

Having given up attacks on the Scottish, uncleglen retrenches to attach the bloody French. You go, girl! The economy in 'cash' terms is kinda irrelevant - the aim of 'cash' is to provide a medium for the exchange of goods and services. It becomes a problem because a lack of economic liquidity simply stops people exchanging. Typically this can be altered in two ways - the first to free up investors to 'create' more product by reducing tax, the second to 'buy' more product by using the public purse as the buyer of last resort (Keynesian economics). This government's objectives were primarily option one - to reduce excessive taxation by controlling public spending and leave industry the opportunity to invest their profits in production (and hence economic growth). Otherwise known as 'austerity'. The reality is that the cuts have been so heavy and sustained that they have removed a significant 'customer' from the market, and the consequence is that wealth creators (small business) have collapsed. Whilst I supported austerity at first as a way to free business to invest in growth, the reality is that dogmatic convictions from this government have gone too far. That ain't just me neever. That's the IMF saying that. Osborne has veered into stupid shit, and this now needs to stop.

I don't think that's reasonable Nette. Here's that notorious right wing hate rag : http://www.guardian.co.uk/society/2013/jan/24/nhs-politics-closures Your youngest child and partner would have been treated somewhere else with equal professionalism and genuine care. The NHS should not be run by tub thumpers.

Does it have to be a human threat? I was so scared I almost vomited in a tourist bus two wheeling it up the whipping hairpins of a Himalayan cliff side with 2 unlimited thrashing on the jury-rigged stereo... whilst the wrecks of previous holiday heroes lay 3 inches to our right and 3,000 feet below.

Prat's an interesting word - I originally thought it was an example of how slang terms for female genitalia became insults. It appears to be the other way around - it's a German word meaning loud mouthed braggart that became slang for female genitalia.

That's not true uncleglen. Only certain powers are devolved to Scotland - many issues of UK national policies are retained in London. That's why the Scots MPs are entitled to those votes unless they are independent. The general tone of your argument is that Scottish people are deliberately manipulating their voting rights to stop the UK being governed properly. I think that's a rather silly interpretation that only aims to sow discord.

That fact that it's a simple in/out referendum is crucial to the anticipated outcome - by avoiding a 'devo max' scenario the risks involved in being 'out' are maximised, and human nature is far more sensitized to tangible losses than it is to hypothetical gains. As with Scotland, the push for an in/out binary choice means Cameron wants 'in' as the response. The isolationists are only cheering this because they're too daft to see 2 moves ahead. It's silly to think the commitment to a referendum is going to shut them up though - attacking Europe is a kind of mental Tourette's Syndrome for them.

I'm guessing that not one resident of ED on this forum has bought a set of winter tyres - for the fairly obvious reason that it's not worth shelling out vast sums of money for something that happens for a couple of days a year. Your money is better spent! So is the taxpayer cash - that's why we don't build a transport system for Arctic conditions.

We're they precisely parallel EP? How deep was the snow? This is indeed intriguing.

I suspect Fox is simply sharing his worldview, any correlation between that and the real world is purely coincidental! ;-)

If you glance down the thread list in this section, hopefully you'll see there aren't any other threads abut ED businesses and restaurants - because there's a section for ED businesses and restaurants. Nobody's being sensitive, just keeping the place tidy ;-)

Planning permission - how??? Neighbour from hell

If she won't cooperate then your only resort is the law - was the hedge hers to cut down? If so, then you'll simply have to put up your own fence. If not then you can sue her for reparations. -
Google has a particularly aggressive spam filter, so it's possible the email is being filtered out. Set up a temporary email account on Yahoo! And see if that works?

Yes, your pictures are too large. Search for an online picture editor and resize it to 600pix wide or less, then upload it.
