  1. Indeed it was for someone to withdraw to from the dining room, but not necessarily restricted to women. High-falutin' drawing rooms would be connected to the state (guest of honour) bedroom, thus ensuring it was one step closer to a knee trembler. It was also 'the' place to entertain guests, a kind of more formal lounge.
  2. Cityjules I think you should probably click on Sean's link and read the whole of the thread. It'll tell you that she protects her anonymity fiercely, and there's been any number of approaches regarding her shop that have made her increasingly irate. You can of course do a search on the owner details through the land registry. Good luck!
  3. What kind of music do you download on Bittorrent, Lewishamman? :)
  4. To be fair bea1, I can see how anyone could interpret "no amount of research will change my mind on this" as "la la la I'm not listening". If you didn't want to come across in this way, you'd need to look at your own prose. Domitianus makes some good points: your body doesn't distinguish between 'natural' or 'unnatural' chemicals. But LE's point is also valid: we've got 4m years of evolution that means our body has already tried and tested the various organically occurring compounds in the concentration that they appear naturally. Recent food science developments are making assumptions based on only 10 or so years of lab work. But overriding that is the fact that as a consequence of food science our lifespan is now the longest it's ever been, and the planet supports a number of people that it could never do with medieval farming practices.
  5. Okay - just to clarify my understanding is that you'd like to see more community outreach groups staffed by ex-addicts? Do you feel there's not enough community teams at the moment, or do you feel that there are, but they're staffed by the wrong people?
  6. I'm not sure too many of these sound sensible. A stye (not stie) is a blocked eyelid oil gland that has become infected. Rubbing anything into it that is likely increase the blockage or spread the infection is ill-advised. In extreme cases antibiotics applied topically or by pill may be necessary. Usually they should go within a week, and can be eased using a warm damp facecloth pressed against it a few times a day - it'll ease the blockage. Lancing it or squeezing it yourself may increase the infection (think of zits that you've poked at too much), and is very risky in this area. If it's not gone in a week, then see someone professional.
  7. Sure antijen. How do you propose their expertise can be used? How do you feel this will contribute to solving crime from drugs? I wasn't at a wedding yesterday?
  8. I doubt it, they could just speak Polish.
  9. Sorry antijen, I couldn't understand this one: "I think its time to involve people who by choice have realised this is not the life they want" Does this mean that you and your chums actually have the solution? How do you want to be 'involved'? You want a job as a social worker or MP? What are you going to do with this power once granted? I 'realised' that I didn't want this life - should I be involved?
  10. So perhaps then this issue could be nailed with "Is there a God like the one in the Bible?" To which I shall say the Bible is a selectively edited work of human fiction: if there was a God of the type in the Bible it would be a coincidence of such enormous scale that the likelihood of it being the case is statistically negligible. In practical terms, there is virtually no chance at all of this God existing. The only reasonable approach to this is to assume that he doesn't.

    Hello

I'm a wide mouthed frog and I eat insects.
  12. I'm not sure the terms of the initial question were set out effectively. Most people (including the OP) seem to assume that the question relates to the biblical figure. I think it's fair to say that the biblical figure is manifestly the fictitious creation of writers and story tellers of the era. The contents of the bible and the fact that millions believe in it are immaterial in postulating the existence of this so very human God. If this kind of God did exist, anything he had in common with the biblical figure would be coincidence. He would just as likely be a blue fairy or a Trekkie plasma cloud or something 'outside of our understanding'. Either way, it's patently nonsense. For those that stray into scientific territory, HAL9000's being too simplistic. Science has made no inroads in forecasting the concept of existence pre-Big Bang - and multi-verses are just one hypothesis that has an equal footing with divine creators. For those that simply 'don't like scientists', I suspect that you simply don't like being held to account for your prejudices. For those that see the world (and God) in a baby's eye, you are merely illustrating that humans are capable of abstract thought. You can achieve similar effects with LSD. There is undoubtedly something very convenient about a God that encompasses a human moral order. It simplifies teaching those altruistic concepts that children struggle to understand. But this doesn't make 'God' exist. So then you're simply left with God as politics: religion. At it's core, religion is about the abdication of personal responsibility in creating a moral framework: "God says..." etc. Having demanded that its adherents take on this ridiculous position, the surrender of the individual is absolute, and consequently presents a neat framework for the execution of some of the greatest crimes known to man. Religion is inherently evil. Science cannot be ruled as false because it doesn't contain a 'moral' code. In fact it does. It's called enlightened self-interest. Altruism makes sense, as does empathy, teamwork etc. etc.
  13. Was that Anne Shelton the aunt of Anne Boleyn? Who woulda thought eh? ;-)
  14. Like this one...?
  15. 'It leaves a glistening trail' Isn't that a slug or snail? Both of the houses I bought in ED were infested with them at the time of purchase. Never to be found in the day, they left ubiquitous stardust trails overnight.
  16. Hmmm.. The Chair (singular) as in 'we are legion'.
  17. And of course direct trains from Herne Hill to Luton on the Thameslink. The earliest direct train is 6am, and the latest one is 10pm - both take an hour. You can get earlier or later ones if you don't mind changing. It's only 13.50 one way, a massive difference from a minicab, and much quicker/less stressful.
  18. I was trying to get across an idea of mixed inputs - the organic issue is about more than health benefits. We need to recognise all issues. It probably didn't work - but I was just having a bit of fun.
  19. I think you're conflating two different issues there brum. The 1960s coincided with massive population migration around the world and decreased shipping costs. This not only increased the knowledge of and access to narcotics (though international networks) but decreased cost of transportation. Compared with that the impact of prescription changes would have been negligible.
  20. I smuggled 10 kilos of Stinking Bishop into Beijing in my suitcase. Not one of my finest moments, it cost me two suits and half my favourite wardrobe.
  21. Sure Shorty, I don't think anyone was looking to create offence, and you're absolutely right, it's fascinating discussion where no-one can guarantee agreement because of its public nature. I truly hope that you'll find guys who can share their experiences. (I was only asking earlier for clarity - but I should add that you said 'facts' were in broad type, but the post previous to this one was clearly opinion not fact, and it was in bold type).

    OASIS -

Muse, one can only dream about waltzing with you ;-) "The vertical expression of horizontal desire" Now who said that?
  23. Welcome back TLS! Are you pulling our legs with the TUBE question? I'm not sure the other one about rats isn't too subjective?
  24. Well, you know me. I'd be happy with 48-sheets on roads and tube stations showing dismembered corpses in the Colombian jungle, with a tag line saying 'That was fun wasn't it? Fancy a shag?' I don't think it's fair to characterise recreational drug taking as a clinical issue that needs resolution through the NHS. Your average housing estate dealer isn't watching an ECG, he's buying stolen BMWs and putting neon lights underneath.
  25. Well, there you go, 'Melt Your Heart' and 'Jaxies' in the same thread.
