  1. Recommendation from me too - recommended on road WhatsApp group. He responded quickly, sorted out the problem. Great job, give him a call: 07818 607583
  2. Hi Alice, could you share a link to this? They'll be grazing sheep!
  3. Recommending Darren who's just done a great job painting the front of my house - replaced rotten wood which probably needed doing the last time I had house painted. House is south facing, sun & rain damaged, Darren did a lot of prep to protect the wood & windows. Anyway it looks great. Totally recommend - a great, thorough job at a fair price. Happy to recommend or answer any PMs. His number is 07879 233900, Marigolds
  4. I'm recommending Mayflower Gardening (07811142388). They laid a lawn and fitted a garden watering system - they did a great job and were very friendly and efficient.

  6. Thanks, Katanita. Always useful to hear other people's experience.
  7. I'm registered on various dog sitting sites but no-one is particularly local. At the moment I need ad hoc dog care for a dachshund (very cute) but this will become Monday to Wednesday, term time only, from the middle of April. Please PM me for more info. Thanks, Marigolds
  8. Hi, Has anyone used the pet and house-sitting site, TrustedHouseSitters? If so, what was it like? Did you get many applicants? As it's ?89 to join, it'd be great to hear anyone's experiences. Thanks, Marigolds
  9. Like others here I despair at the cost of this work. Would love to know how much the consultation alone cost, as residents and businesses along the route were invited to a number of consultation events. I went to one on Turney Road at the old South Bank Uni site. A really unclear, lengthy,hot-tabling exercise where we were all invited to look at lovely models, move our expensively produced photo cards around and then comment on a number of complicated (and remarkably unclear) options. There were a lot of suggestions from people attending this event and I don't imagine any of them included the shambles that is there now! Today I saw someone coming over from Carlton Ave, across the junction and enter Turney on the wrong side of the road. No signs, no island and fading lines. Fortunately, there wasn't another car waiting to be hit. So whilst people say people shouldn't be allowed to drive if they can't understand this layout, I don't think you can just blame drivers when it's this unclear. Many people passing through this junction won't have local knowledge. This junction is a hopeless, expensive folly, not even pleasing the cyclists who were meant to benefit from it. Not familiar with how these decisions are made but I think there should be accountability for delivering something as awful as this. Galling to see this money squandered.
  10. Every time I go into this shop, I mean to post something to say what great stock Paul has and how fair his prices are. I've been going in there more or less since it opened and would hate to see it go. The red route seems to have really taken its toll on the business. Paul's put a sign by the road pointing out that you can park between 10-4 (or on Melford Road). There's not much footfall along that strip but it is worth going along to get great flowers and plants. Think he sells Christmas trees too. I've got no connection with this shop, I just wanted to support a local, long-established business.
  11. I posted the message below a week or so ago. Burglaries seem to be happening at more unexpected times. Early evening 'pop in for a burgle' maybe not so unusual. Scary for georgeeepee to come face to face with someone in the garden! "I live close to Woodwarde Road. Next door neighbour broken into at 6.30pm on a Friday, a couple of weeks ago, neighbours were in, on both sides. Last week, house opposite broken into at 7.30pm mid-week, again all immediate neighbours in. Both houses had alarms. From my house I saw someone in the house across the road (after the alarm had been ringing for a couple of minutes), went over and banged on the door. Police said burglaries are 'prolific' in this area. Both times burglars (police say usually a pair, one inside passing stuff to the one outside) climbed on rear extension and broke first floor windows"

Alarms are a pain and are easy to ignore but maybe banging on doors mean that if there's anyone in your neighbour's house they'll get scared off.
  13. Why did I look ? Just interrupted a lovely Sunday by looking at Southern Rail site......This is what it says..... "Due to the industrial action by drivers in the ASLEF and RMT unions, regrettably we expect Southern services to be severely disrupted every day until further notice. On Monday 12th December there will be a reduced service operating with no service on some routes. Please avoid travelling at peak times and services are expected to be very busy and queuing systems may be in place. you should allow extra time for your journey. Further details are available on our travel advice page. Please ensure you check your journey before setting off". Deeply despairing !! Strike days Tues-Thurs, so is Monday a rest day, 'no service on some routes' ?
  14. Hi, Need about 4-5 wheelbarrow loads of smashed paving stones collecting and some other odd bits e.g.. old plastic drainpipes and a few bits. Not enough for a small skip. Too heavy to take in car. Does anyone know of anyone who collects ? Thanks.

I live on one of the proposed Quietway roads. I went on this online map months ago and struggled to make any sense of it. I did this after a neighbourhood group sent an email alerting us that our busy through road was designated as part of the proposed Quietway route. Six months later still 'no engagement' from Southwark or whichever organisation is responsible for this. No letters, flyers but lots of local speculation that is doing nothing to inform or garner support. Our road is quiet between about 1am and 6 am at best. Can anyone tell me what he time frame is for the ED to CrystslPalace Scheme ? Why does the scheme go across the horrible Dulwich Village junction into Turney Road rather than through Dulwich Village and up the toll road ? Hilly yes, but Crystal Palace is on a hill. Is the issue that the toll road is owned by Dulwich Estate ? It's certainly a 'quieter way'.
  16. Bought some great bread today at reasonable price from Peckham Cart Project which is sited between a bra stall and a threading stall in the Aylesham Shopping Centre - not what you'd expect, think it used to be a candy floss stall. Bread is delicious. Stall is run as a social enterprise project in partnership with Flour City Bakery generating revenue for the Southwark Refuge and Migrant Project. The man I spoke to was very knowledgable and clearly passionate about his product. Recommend.
  17. Hi Jess I recommend the shop on the corner of Melbourne Road and Lordship Lane, blue shutters but I don't know the name (opposite the library). Think it's a paper/sweetshop I recently took an HP Pavillion (not sure of number) there. A friend recommended. It was a reasonable quote - I honestly can't remember how much though. Didn't go ahead with repair as we were burgled and the broken laptop was taken. Worth popping in I'd say. Marigolds
  18. Hi Keen to have someone come over, look at garden site and give quote for supply and installation. What was your 'experience' like ? Jo

We foolishly signed up for BT Infinity with You View 2 years ago. Even more foolishly when I called to cancel in November, I was persuaded that all our drop out, buffering, slow issues would be resolved by getting a new more modern hub and tying ourselves into another contract. What a mistake. You View just doesn't work and the internet connection is slower than with old hub and takes some time to connect. I was told the hub can support I think 16 devices running simultaneously - we're probably running 6-7 with kids computers and phones but it is noticeably slower. We've had engineers out. Things are ok when they leave but it doesn't last. We have real difficulties using catchup on TV - it just stops with various messages coming up. (Can't remember what off top of head but invariably telling us there is no internet connection). Have made so many calls to BT where the whole issue has to be explained yet again - they don't seem to keep v accurate records which irritates me as we have same conversations about Ethernet cables blah blah. Obviously this is all remote service which takes no account of where your tv, hub, you view box is which makes their advice hard to follow and implement - someone in situ would be so much better. Also hard to follow if you're not a computer/wifi buff as they do go into quite some detail over a lengthy and still don't help to fix the problem ! If you do ask for an engineer they send the 'reminder' tx that it'll cost you ?130 if the fault is found to be yours - quite honestly at this point it might be mine as the wires have been in and out so many times that possibly it's a faulty set up so I feel unsure now about asking them to come.I've run out of steam at the moment but need to tackle BT again. Last time I checked Virgin wasn't available on my road, maybe that's changed. It's so frustrating when you can't use what you're paying a pretty hefty fee for.
  20. Yesterday and today, the 7.47 train to LB (N Dul time) ran with 4 rather than the usual 8 carriages. Yesterday (light snow, even in outlying areas)the usually accessible rear carriage was impossible to get in, despite the usual 'move down the carriage' shouts. There was no where to move to ! I gave up and went off in to Herne Hill to get the bus and was late for a teaching session that I'd left home in plenty of time for. Today another 4 carriage train ran at this time. With head down and determination I managed to get on at N Dul. Looked like lots of people in E Dulwich weren't able to do so and would have had to wait another 20 minutes for the 8.10. The train was hideous with people packed in nose to nose and doors barely closing. At least we made it to London Bridge without the mysterious holding periods of up to 15 minutes, outside LB. When we finally got through the gate on platform 15 (as i'm always in the rear carriage I don't know why we have to stand without moving, for a few minutes - I understand ebb and flow but it seems like a mighty long time before it suddenly flows (Anyway that's another post)... I spoke to one of those smartly-dressed office representatives from Southern sent down to deal with frustrated customers. She said that until another customer/'passenger' had complained just before me, she and her colleagues were unaware of the issues on this line over the last couple of days. She offered me the customer complaint leaflet. I took a few to give out when, inevitably, there is another delay, cancellation or shortened train. She shared that until recently staff on the ground were not aware of the 'fast running' trains to West Croydon ie.those scheduled trains that are listed on the departure board to stop enroute to E and N Dulwich but suddenly disappear from the board only for the inevitable announcement apologising that the train won't be stopping at our stations. She has brought that to her manager's attention. (management didn't know ??!! Of course they did). So my point... Yes London Bridge is chaos and I am grateful that trains are still running there from N&E Dulwich but if there is only one train between 7.27 and 8.07 (N Dul times) it is unbelievable that Southern (or whoer their network agents are)would send a 4 carriage train on this very busy and much diminished line at 7.47. (The driver announced that this was the 'unit' he had been allocated at the depot). It is really stressful, hot and for those of us who are a little claustrophobic frankly unbearable. Only 4 people on that train stopped to complain. I can't believe we were the only ones to feel frustrated. If you haven't got time to stop at the station, email, telephone or use the passenger complaint leaflet to let Southern management know what it is like on our trains. Take some pictures to illustrate. They're not the ones struggling to stand up on these cattle trains. I'm not sure what the solution is but our line is certainly in need of some help. I know that it is a massive infrastructure project but these problems need to be addressed even if it's just ensuring that we have our usual 8 carriage trains to prevent morning meltdown, commuters that is. This must be a health hazard for some people as it's so hard to move. I know we've all got train commute horror stories. Let's not stand and fume. Let's get writing, tweeting, emailing etc. Rant over ! Let's see what added joy bus strike Thursday brings to our morning and evening commutes. Marigolds
  21. I am interested in buying a piece of furniture from TW1 tomorrow afternoon. It is a low storage unit 185 cm long. I am happy to pay ?30 for someone to collect it for me and bring back to East Dulwich. It would just be the stand no passengers. Please PM me if you're up for it. Thanks
  22. Thanks folks. Deep down I know I have to pay but always happy to take on bureaucracy but it looks like I'm on a loser here. Would love to know how many tickets are getting issued at that spot !

So changing the direction of this thread a little? last week I parked across part of a 'type A' dropped kerb on Nutfield Road. Total accident as I was looking for road markings on the freshly tarmaced road and not at the pavement. Got out of the car and walked away from car, so didn't see the kerb (A fool and her money are easily parted - no way would I have parked there if I'd seen it) My gripe is that when I got back to the ticket I saw that the exact corner on the other side of the road had a thick "H line' painted across, indicating clearly 'no parking'. There was no such line where I parked and the faded double yellows were at least a metre from the end of the car. I understand the rules about not parking in front of the dropped kerb ways but it doesn't appear fair not to put a line across what appears to be a generous parking space. The man who kindly watched me park, (without comment, thank you for that !) and then observed 'that corner's a gold mine for the council" win I came back, indicated that this is happening all the time at that spot. A nice revenue-earner for Southwark ! So my question is, is it worth appealing ? Especially if Suduhe's road engineer is adamant that there should be road markings across every dropped kerb in Southwark. I'm not looking for sympathy or a rollicking for selfishness, just advice? It's a higher level fine of ?65 before Friday or ?130 after. Am I right to think that you pay the higher level if you appeal and it's over-ruled ? I do have photos to include in any appeal. Will readily pay the ?65 if it seems I'm on to a no-brainer. Although reading this thread it looks as clear as mud !
  24. Had the same problem earlier this summer for my year 10. The school was hopeless. When I pointed out the insurance issue the teacher responded that lots of schools do it in year 10 and he had no contacts ! My older kids did their WE after GCSEs in Year 11 and so had a lot more choices. (Also they were also more mature by then and approached organisations directly, Y10 son had no idea how to get started - schools rely on parents to organise !) At last minute I asked in local chemist when I was having passport photos done. They couldn't take him as they already had someone coming but they called another chemist who took him for a week at very short notice. Although he has no specific interest in Pharmacy or Retail I think he learnt about routine, issues facing some of the customers and something of retail. The pharmacist said he can put him down as a referee for if he looks for part time job. All in all a worthwhile experience despite my grumbling. It is worth asking in the ED shops. Good luck!
  25. My 17 year old daughter is looking to volunteer on a local project or for a local organisation for a period over the summer- maybe a play scheme, summer holiday programme or working with organisations supporting the elderly. Can anyone recommend a non-profit organisation that might welcome someone with a good range of skills ? (Admin I hope this can stay on this section rather than moved to 'Wanted'.) Thanks, Marigolds
