  1. That Spanish Tapas restaurant / cafe on north Cross Road was only ever open at very random intervals/. Sometimes it would be closed for months on end. I don't remember the fruit shop being open all the time either.
  2. Interesting program. They said at the end that cost was ?290k but they were hoping to get it down to ?272k when tbey got the VAT back. Made me wonder how you can claim back VAT on rebuilding your own home.
  3. What does this mean "Bectu have announced plans to disrupt the British Film Institute?s London film festival "?
  4. "serving the local community" is a bit rich too. A 'newsagent' is as capitalist as any other enterprise, out to make a profit from the local punters flogging them fags and booze and assorted sundries. So-called gentrification isn't the problem for these types of business. The biggest issues are 1) nobody pays for 24 hour old hard copy news in print any more, 2) nobody buys specialist magazines any more because the internet covers all bases, 3) smoking is banned and is a dying art (literally), 4) young people today have better thkngs to do than go to the corner shop, buy some beer and stand outside drinking it, 5) old people can buy their beer cheaper and just as easily at a 24 hr supermarket etc etc All the advantages a convenience store like this once had have gone but it isn't because of gentrification.
  5. I guess that's why they sold wine to take away as well as to drink in!
  6. Fortunately it was granted change of use from A1 to A4 some time ago. http://planbuild.southwark.gov.uk/documents/?casereference=11/AP/2949&system=DC
  7. 3 out of 4 of those examples are explainable but the 2014 / 15 one is very weird!
  8. This thing about reporting drivers to the police bothers me a bit. I presume a minicab firm has a duty of confidentiality regarding the data of its passengers (where they've been, when etc) that might make a disclosure difficult. But also isn't the onus on the victim to report their claim to the police first rather than to the employer of the alleged attacker? I'm not sure why the mini cab firm should be involved at all, beyond co-operating fully with the police once a complaint has been made.
  9. I'm going to ask Southwark council to have a look at this scheme recently adopted in canterbury: http://www.express.co.uk/news/nature/850285/dog-poo-fines-council-demands-owner-proof-bag If dog owners were encouraged to carry poo bags then they might even bother to use them. If not there would be more resources for the council to pay for a street cleaner...
  10. Toast has only just reopened after its last refurb!
  11. A cyclist at any speed on the pavement is a menace. You might think London's cyclists would have learned a lesson from the young man recently gaoled for killing a pedestrian while cycling dangerously but it seems not.
  12. East Dulwich will be next. There are CPZs preventing commuting from North Dulwich through Herne Hill to Brixton . If parking to commute from Denmark Hill and Peckham Rye is impossible then those people will drive into East Dulwich to park and the clamour for a CPZ there will grow and grow. It's an inveitable domino effect
  13. Usually I would agree rendel but if the traffic is as bad as claimed it is hard to imagine cars crawling through these lights at dangerous speeds.
  14. So the first priority is raising revenue from the queue rather than improving traffic flow.
  15. A cynic might think that turning the community against the club by hosting events like this would mean less objections to getting rid of it altogether and turning the whole site into flats.
  16. The solution to this is to take it out of Southwarks hands. Presumably all these people queueing up for an hour have to drive througb that junction. I suggest someone co-ordinates them all to arrive at the junction from the south. The gridlock will quickly extend back on to the south circular and block that road which is under the management of TFL. Once they see the extent of the problem they will sort it immediately. So a strike / protest that blocks the south circular is what is needed.
  17. That is shocking. The council can't even use their normal excuse that it's because of the shop forecourts.
  18. I find stories this quite upsetting and hope that you spreading the news really helps prevent it happening to someone else. What kind of utter scum bag does it take to rip off vulnerable old people ffs.
  19. I don;t know if its cheaper and therefore easier to fix periodically, but less robust, but the newish tarmac surface on the pavement of Crawthew Grove is very smooth and could be a good quick solution for LL.
  20. The view won't look like that any more though! A lot more skyscrapers...
  21. Also handy for a pint of milk or similar on a sunday evening after co-op has closed. I'm not sure this application will get through. They seem to need to meet the following criteria for a change of use: "The premises has been vacant for a period of at least 12 months with demonstrated sufficient effort to let, or have not made a profit over a 2 year period." Quite clearly it hasn't been vacant and it would seem it must be profitable if it's still open. They say it might not be profitable because it has to compete with M& S !!
  22. James what happened to this? "messageRe: East Dulwich councillor - how can I help? Posted by James Barber June 06, 11:33AM Hi esme, Certainly the Lordship Lane paving. I've walked the lane with officer and they're preparing a schedule of things that need fixing based on our audit. "
  23. Might be worth calling the Age UK helpline and seeing what they suggest. I'm sure this is something they will have experience of.
  24. Still not much going on here it seems.
  25. The planning application seems a bit desperate in places. Trying to claim that M and S is providing majot competition to Londis is a good joke.
