  1. I have requested that the council look at including a separate section with ground anchors for parking motorcycles at the end of some of the proposed yellow lines at each junction that they insist on installing. Where included that particular section of yellow lines could be a bit shorter while still maintaining the sight lines that appear to be the purpose of the lines.

Hi Admin, I apologise if my request for a general reset new posts button is causing you problems and making hundreds of old posts appearing as new ones at the moment. I've admin'd a small website and know they can be quirky things at best.

Hi Admin, You recently said that resetting new posts would speed up the website. I now do this regularly. However, I can only see a way to do this separately for every section. Is there a global button to reset them all that I have missed. If not, would it be possible to add one to the home page unless there is a technical reason for not doing so. Thanks.
  5. In my earlier years, some 40 years ago, most of my friends lived around Crystal Palace and we used to meet and drink around there most weekends. The college was even more protective of its territory then and there was no transport through college territory at all. It made a great big no-mans land between the two. I got very used to the late night walk home past the college and down through the village. The park being closed at night made the walk even longer. To scale the fence and shorten the route was very tempting. At least today we have some amount of transport between the two although it could still be much improved.
  6. If it's "downhill all the way" surely that means it's "uphill all the way" in the other direction. Every journey is composed of two halves and a lot of people, me included, won't be able to do the uphill part of the journey.
  7. Hi Rolo. Does the app play in HD or low resolution. I would struggle to enjoy watching most sport in SD. The offer for ?20 instead of ?60 seems deliberately timed by Discovery to expire the moment that the Sky contract ends. If a deal with Sky is done at the last minute then anybody will have signed up for no reason. I do like the cycling during the summer and the family like the tennis. I find it's getting difficult to get a range of sport on one package.
  8. I'm surprised that no one appears to have posted this anywhere. Apologies if I have missed the thread. As of the 1st Feb (next Wednesday) no Discovery channels will be available to Sky viewers. This includes Eurosport 1 and 2 with the tennis and cycling franchises and most of the winter sport. According to Sky it is because Discovery are demanding ?1B (yes a billion pounds) to show their channels and Sky are refusing to pay such a sum. Negotiations continue but no one seems optimistic of a settlement.
  9. I did post a while go that I thought that some secure motor bike spaces should be provided within the yellow line zones that the council insist will be installed on every junction in Southwark. No one responded so I contacted James Barber. He thought that I meant parking on double yellows. When I clarified that I meant a motorbike bay within the 7.5 metres so that the desired sight lines were still maintained while also providing secure parking he kindly forwarded it to the appropriate council officer for consideration including offering some local funding for the secure anchors. I don't have a motorbike but I do think it could also alleviate some of the extra pressure on car parking which will be caused by the yellow lines. A motorbike can take up as much room as a car especially when it needs to be chained to a tree or lamp post to stop it being stolen. I'm not holding my breath that the council will see any sense in this proposal but I must say that James Barber has done whatever he can to help. Thank you James.
  10. National Rail website shows 4 or 5 trains an hour from next week. Wonder how many will actually run!
  11. Edhistory, I think it is a picture taken standing in front of the Dulwich College tollgate looking up the road that leads to towards Dulwich and Sydenham golf course. The tollgate itself would be just out of shot to the right.
  12. And must have ignored the no right turn out of East Dulwich Grove if they headed south.
  13. Perhaps they could provide secure motorcycle parking rails/anchors within the new designated double yellow lines that they want to put on every junction in Southwark. It would help with the recent spate of thefts whilst still providing the desired sight lines at the junctions. It would also alleviate slightly the parking pressure that the lines will cause. A motorcycle can sometimes take up as much space as a small car and I am always worried about knocking them over when parking since they disappear from view in the rear view mirrors.
  14. Thanks Rendel, That's a pity. Would have been a nice way to get to work or home. Shame we can't really tie up our river services as an inclusive part of our travel cards. I'll have to put it in as a suggestion on the next questionnaire from the mayor about travel on Talk London. In Vancouver for example the travel ticket includes the boat to the other side of the harbour if it is within the set time limit which I believe an hour of the start of the journey. Bit similar to the hop on another bus just bought in by TFL just not as flexible.
  15. Hi Scarlettbanks, I can't testify to how crowded it is in the morning. I only use the route to get to Cutty Sark and Greenwich socially. It also avoids zone one but you would have to check out the daily cost for each route separately. If you bus it to a station from Herne Hill I suspect you will hit the daily cap for the return journey anyway if you don't get a season ticket. For DMW23 from Nunhead it's a no brainer since Lewisham is the next stop only a few minutes away. I do agree with Milhouse about the luxury of the boat down the river. I do it from Embankment down to Greenwich whenever I have overseas visitors. A great way to wind down of a summer's evening after work. London Bridge is the obvious port of call if the trains are running. A river shuttle service between London Bridge and Canary Wharf (13 minutes) also operates every 10 minutes in the peak hours. They accept Oyster cards as well but I don't know if that is included in the daily cap. Hope you find a happy way to work.
  16. An option which may be against the general flow of people into town for the first part of the journey is train to Lewisham from Denmark Hill (DH) @ 7:53am or 8:19am or 4 minutes later from Peckham Rye(PR) or Nunhead. It takes about 11-15 minutes from DH depending on which train you take. Then DLR every 2 - 4 minutes to Heron Quays or Canary Wharf whichever is closest to your workplace. Takes 16 minutes. Obviously you can use bike, bus (37 to PR from Herne Hill or 68 to DH), train from North Dulwich to PR (also 42 bus to DH) or walk to your preferred starting point. I don't do this journey but it's always useful to know all the alternatives because there are so many problems on all routes nowadays.
  17. Why is the taxpayer picking up the tab for this and not the atrocious Southern rail? We are paying ourselves for this appalling service.
  18. Thank you for trying to inject some common sense into this James. I'm not holding my breath that they will listen though. I would have thought that with a 20 mph speed limit a clearance of one small cars length maximum from a junction apex, about 4 metres, would be more than sufficient.
  19. It looks much worse than the Google maps picture now because they have knocked out most of the back wall to install two large gates for access to the site. A small tap from a lorry or van using the gates and it will be over.
  20. All terraces have two ends. Which end are you starting at left or right. It could still be either under this scenario.
  21. Thanks Applespider, I'm not familiar with all the different connections to Gatwick so will look at the Norwood Junction route as an option. There appears to be a slow train from there every 1/2 hour at the moment. Fastest to change at East Croydon but as you say with luggage that's not great. The Clapham Junction route is not such a trial as you may think since it is only 14 minutes from Denmark Hill to Clapham Junction on the overground. If you are close to the station it makes more sense than any other route. Total time to Gatwick from there an hour within a few minutes either way. For early morning flights the 197 to East Croydon is great but after that I can't imagine getting there faster than the trains by whatever route you chose. It is just annoying to lose what was the simplest route of all and seems very shortsighted, unless you think it is deliberate, to cut off easy access to a major airport for large parts of South London.
  22. Looks like they are cutting off easy access to Gatwick Airport for this part of South London. It was always an easy 15 minutes from Forest Hill to East Croydon and another 15 from there to Gatwick. They have even recently made it Oyster card all the way. It's not clear about the service from East Dulwich to East Croydon. It looks like there might be some outside of peak hours but I honestly can't decipher their notes and sub-notes. It may be the only way left to avoid going into Victoria and catching the Gatwick Express is overground from Denmark Hill to Clapham Junction and a train from there.
  23. I live just round the corner and my polling station is now Lordship Lane Baptist church, 287 Lordship Lane. That must be the one at the junction of Goodrich Road. New one to me since it has always been Heber Road school in the past. They must actually have been listening about alternatives in order to avoid disruption to the children's education.
  24. ?10 return from Fenchurch Street to Stanford-le-hope which is a mile from the ground. Trains every 1/2 hour both ways takes 50 mins. Walk, cab or #100 bus to the ground. Exercise and beer. Win Win (fingers crossed)
  25. You could try the Dulwich Constitutional Club in East Dulwich Grove. About 100 metres up from The Bishop. I believe it is available for private hire with a large hall, separate bar and gardens out by the bowls green. 020 8693 1949
