  1. Penguin68, I commute from and to ED station every weekday and there are precious few "older or frailer" commuters. In fact, as someone born in the 60s, I sometimes feel old when surrounded by such young folk on the platform ;-)
  2. No, I said "as yet unknown numbers" because I'm not convinced of the extent of the 'problem'. And I don't think we should necessarily "force" lazy people to do anything.
  3. apmuso, I suspect many of those (as yet unknown numbers) who "park in our neck of the woods" might not be coming from miles away but are from the other end of East Dulwich and are commuters who can't be a*sed to walk a bit further or take a bus to the station. On a similar theme, I'm amazed at how many people get picked up from the station - and not just late at night. Walk home or get a bus, you lazy sods! And unfortunate as it may seem, they're not "our streets" and phrases such as "keep our streets for ourselves" show a fundamental misunderstanding of what constitutes public space. Just IMHO of course...
  4. Oh great - "mission creep", as I suggested before. No thanks.

  6. Indeed - the East Dulwich Grove/Melbourne Grove crossroads which forms the boundary of the proposed zone is at most five minutes' walk from the station. I walk quite briskly and reckon three will do it...
  7. .. and if it is the problem you describe, can you be sure that you won't simply be moving it on to other residents who are just outside the zone? The oft-mentioned Herne Hill scheme might not be the wonderful solution some claim - you might want to read this and this about the cost and the prospect of "mission creep"...

Our road is emptier at the weekends and we're not near the station. Why is that? And I'm not having a go. As we probably live outside any proposed charging zone (which is what it should be called) but still near to it, it might well have an an impact, so we deserve to have a say in the argument.
  10. ... or maybe, at the weekends, residents go away or are more likely to be out and about in sufficient numbers to allow for you to find a space or two. And, perhaps more harshly, why should others pay because you're "bored of the hassle"?

How do you know that that's due to increased numbers of commuters parking rather than to more people on your road owning cars, for instance? I only hope the consultation will include a proper survey of actually how many commuter cars there usually are in the area close to the station. Getting hundreds of households to fork out thousands of pounds just to park their cars (and pass on the parking 'congestion' to roads next to the charging zone) is inconceivable without proper evidence. Simply basing it on people who decided to live near a station saying "I want to park outside my house" really isn't enough...
  12. FWIW you'd have found no problem parking in Glengarry, Trossachs or Tarbert Road - I'd guess that's no more than four minutes' walk from the corner of Melbourne/Ashbourne Grove.

  14. Indeed, but the thrust of the article is that pretty much all of Fleet St colludes in this behaviour by under-reporting it or not reporting it at all... and by taking part themselves in illegally obtaining information. It's very self-satisfying to shout and rant at the big bogeymen (Murdoch, Brookes etc), but it's less comforting to realise that it's the system that's corrupt. That, of course, doesn't excuse any individual's behaviour...

  18. There's the weird new verbal tic of answering a question or responding to an opinion with, "No... yeah..." What's that all about? "Don't you think this beer's a bit warm?" "No... yeah..." Well, is it or isn't it?
