  1. Dear God, have we produced young people like this? We should all hang our heads in shame, whatever our political views.
  2. Really? Looks more like vandalism and looting to me. And please don't call it a party.

I'm not a Tory and I don't eat cupcakes.

  7. And avoid the London Bridge Tandoori. I've ended up there several times after an evening in the pub and regretted it every time... dull food and overpriced.

  10. You used the word "coercing". As far as I can tell, the restaurateurs could have told him to sod off and their businesses won't suffer. In what way is that coercion? If someone wants foie gras back on the menu, they can go and ask them to do so. If Tom believes he is right, then let him talk to others and try to persuade them of his view. Any problem with that?
  11. Not sure about the 'coercing restaurateurs' bit. What would have been the consequences if they'd told Tom to sod off? Broken windows? Permanent picket? Customers being spat on? Probably not...

No, that doesn't follow, alas. There are lots of other factors that affect debt apart from welfare spending - tax rates, rates of economic growth, non-welfare spending etc.

But for most of the time "From the early 50s until the 70s" we had Conservative governments. Spending on the Welfare State has risen under all governments since the War. You can argue whether that's good or bad, but the real differences between the two parties in this respect have been small.
