Genuine question Keano - given that the question was Leave/Remain, and we have triggered A50, how is it potentially undemocratic (forgive the crude phrasing)? I've long worried that part of the problems we face is that people voted Leave for many reasons, and they will be cheesed off when events don't mirror their vision of the UK. But I'm not sure how it could be otherwise? We were asked a question, that's all. We don't get a say in how the implement the result (general elections aside).

Keep moving those goalposts UG, it's so much fun to watch. You do love speaking in riddles - why don't you try writing more than a bigoted sounbite for once, give us the full broadside of your wisdom? Or is it easier to despise what you don't like? Let the hate flow through you, embrace your destiny young padawan!

What Burbage said. Plus, though it frankly disgusts me to admit this about my country, to backtrack that hard on A50 would be to open the floodgates to UKIP, Britain First and worse.

I do however wish the DUP weren't involved, they seem to me to be like small kids that have been allowed to sit at the adult table and are now messing everything up. > > I'm not sure the Northern Ireland border question > is really such the big deal that it's being made > out to be. Well, maybe, but if it's true that there has to be a 'hard' border between EU/non-EU land (and seeing as how immigration was such a driving force behind many Leave votes I cannot see how hard borders cannot be enforced), how can that be reconciled with the demands of the DUP that no hard border exist between the North and the Republic, or between the North and the UK mainland? Surely a 'hard' border will need to exist somewhere, but is this not Nimbyism taken past the point of practicality? > > One thing you have to admire about the EU is it's > ability over the years to fudge matters with > impenetrable ambiguous jargon that allows wriggle > room. So a solution will be found. I share your essential viewpoint, but it seems that we are all being held hostage by the DUP here. > > The real problem is what it has always been - the > EU cannot agree a deal whereby Britain would be > seen to be better off outside the bloc than within > it without risking the collapse of the whole > edifice. To be fair Keane, even you have to admit this is becoming a big of a mess now. I'm not quite sure how the Leave campaign found itself this unprepared but it's starting to look like they never really expected any adversity in the process. I'm genuinely confused as to how no one thought the Irish border would be a problem, I can't for the life of me work out what the DUP thinks is an acceptable outcome.

But that's isn't their deal. They were born in the discredited ashes of the BNP and try to pass themselves off as moderate when they're anything but. Seriously, after 9/11, 7/7, Madrid, endless years of A-Q, Daesh and rancid little murderers occasionally managing to evade MI5 and carry out whatever attacks they can, I don't think anyone in this land needs to be reminded of how bad these ultra-hardcore fools can be. We know. And I think we also know that they are far less effective than they used to be, having been reduced to using vans and knives, as opposed to guns, bombs and airliners. Are their some extremists in our midst? Of course there are. How many other Muslims are there, going about their daily business not bombing, stabbing or raping anyone? For Britain First, Islam merely serves as a useful tool. Someone to blame. I have no love for any extremists and I don't shed a tear when a drone strike obliterates them; live by the sword, die by the sword. But BF are nationalists. First and foremost, nationalists look to blame the problems of their society on other people. First, the Muslims, but if they had their way they wouldn't stop there. That's why video clips like that are so dangerous. No context, no clarity, no verification. In this age of social media it's easier than ever for them to spread lies and simply accuse those who oppose them of being appeasers and defeatists. Now where have we heard that before? That's why they're dangerous.

Trump brought Pence in because as soon as he was seriously in the race he began to understand that he needed a solid Republican as VP in order to win - for all his talk of 'draining the swamp' he settled into it quite comfortably from very early on. In return Pence gets the next shot at the Oval Office as soon as the GOP decides Trump has outstayed his welcome.
-
I've long been convinced he's only a seat-warmer for Pence, who is decidedly unpleasant.

So you still don't understand how the EMA works? Back to your echo chamber then... New jobs coming to the UK are fantastic; why wouldn't we be in support? Genuine question.

Kettle. Black. If you'll pardon the phrase... Back on topic, I personally find the use of the word 'black boy' unhelpful as a description when that is all that is goven - the other thread was a perfect example of this. Here there are more details given, which gives a better impression of someone trying to give a description, and from the sounds of it that's probably all they could ascertain of these heinous young fools. I wonder though, would it have seemed half as offensive if it had been 'black male youths'? Language evolves over time. I hope the victim mounts a full recovery, no one deserves such brutality. -

I know this isn't what you asked, but it kind of links. If you like Quorn, try something called Tempeh. SMBS stock it, it's a frozen product so you need to think ahead a day or so, but it's delicious. I was introduced to it by an Australian cousin with a a medically restrictive diet (essentially vegan with a couple of oddities), who said it's widespread down under and very popular. Google it, see if SMBS still sell it, basically anything Asian you can do with meat, you can do with Tempeh. I tried it chargrilled with satay sauce, it was fantastic.

If you have to ask you can't afford it...

Wouldn't surprise me if it was all true - Russia are masters of misdirection, deception and subterfuge and have plainly worked out how to maximise the internet for such purposes.

"Can Louise Mensch be trusted at all?" No. Not at all. She's trying to make a name for herself. While I'd love to see Farage arrested, I'm not holding my breath.

It's not the 'wrong stance', but we all know that anywhere you go there'll be someone happy to advance themselves at the expense of others. Plus ca change, plus c'est la meme chose...

I really don't understand this argument. I'm about as big an advocate of state education as you'll find, but I've never understand the antipathy shown towards those who can afford to live close to a good quality school. Some people make massive sacrifices to do it, I don't think that's a bad thing. It's not the same as paying for private education.

I thought there was quite a lot of coverage of that trip? None of it pleasant; the words 'traitors' and 'anti-democracy' came up once or twice as I recall. Apparently once you lose a referendum you lose all right to argue against it, a fact shoved down my throat by a lot of Leave voters who happily ignore the fact that they've been arguing for 40 years since the last referendum on this.

Of course he's self-serving - it's bloody Goldman Sachs! That's pretty much all they're about. So that said, the question becomes; is this just one person mouthing off because they've been slapped down by the ECB (folkvlike him are notoriously sensitive to criticism), or the start of something wider as business starts to get fed up with what it perceives as lack of progress and clarity? Ultimately (cynic that I am) I believe whatever deal is made will be driven by the needs and wants of corporations more than anything else, and I can't help wondering if they've decided to flex their muscles. Personally I don't think someone from Goldman Sachs does themselves any favours in this way, no one trusts a word they say and rightly so. If we see other businesses following suit and being vocal then it'll be more of a thing, until then this just looks like a petulant banker spitting his dummy.
