That is enough. This thread is about Xoco, please stay on topic. Fulwich Dox -

I worked in a cinema as a student, jobs included dealing with drunk, violent and ill customers, cleaning up the mess left in the auditorium, which could include used condoms, syringes, vomit etc, cleaning the lavatories - even worse - etc etc - and that was in a posh university town! Most of the time you only got to watch movies in time off as on the job the whole time was spent rushing around. Your attitude that people doing shit jobs (mainly cleaning up after the likes of you) deserve shit wages is utterly reprehensible.

Abe_froeman Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > "Ideally everyone would be in receipt of the LLW. > " > > Erm, wouldn't that just cause rampant inflation, > pushing up the cost of living beyond the so-called > LLW? Why? Aldi pays the London Living Wage yet has the cheapest prices. Paying the Living Wage isn't just about businesses coughing up, there are all manner of benefits such as decreased absenteeism, greater employee loyalty etc which help offset the cost rises. Pleased to see some supporters of the LW on here at last! Those saying Picturehouse isn't the worst offender, no it isn't (though its employment practices are pretty bad, 80% of staff on zero hours contract, no sick pay in first year, sick pay only after eight days' absence after that) but that shouldn't stop its employees for asking for fair pay. It's a useful flagship case, as it's a perceived luxury brand charging top prices whilst still not paying the LLW. The argument that it will cost business more could be used to argue against any form of ethical consumerism - as certain people above clearly would.
-
Picturehouse have reneged on a promise to pay staff LLW and keep 80% of their staff on zero hours contracts. Our definition of "good guys" obviously differs. Sorry if you think it's "fatuous" for people to campaign for fair wages and terms of employment (a campaign backed by Sadiq Khan and Ken Loach, amongst many others). Curzon Cinemas pays its staff LLW, so it clearly is possible. ETA "The vast majority of businesses across the city..." Check out who does pay living wage here: http://www.livingwage.org.uk/who-pays-the-living-wage?title=&field_region_tid=7&field_sector_tid=All&field_industry_tid=All&items_per_page=42 - companies including Barclays, KPMG, Aviva, Accenture - this isn't some loony left demand, it's companies recognising that it's only right that when they make huge profits their employees get enough to live on.

According to Gmaps, East Dulwich ends along Lordship Lane - don't know if the end of Court Lane falls into Forest Hill though... http://i.imgur.com/zVnekgq.png

Mates who've been to the ENO Pirates say it's well worth a visit, there are still seats available this month from ?12 (last performance March 25th).

I agree with most of what you say Joe, but actually M&S announced last year that from this coming April they will pay their staff ?9.65 per hour, pretty close to LLW.

I freely admit I'm not the best with finance - just ask my bank manager, or indeed Mrs.H - but clearly Cineworld could afford to pay LLW, albeit by accepting lower profits. I was merely disputing the previous poster's point that cinemas would be economically unviable if they paid the LLW, which in the case of Cineworld/Picturehouse is clearly not the case.

El Presidente Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Working in a cinema is low skilled work. They do > well to get above the minimum wage. Cinema's would > be economically unviable if you had to pay > everyone this made up London Living Wage. In the first six months of 2016 Cineworld (owners of the Picturehouse group) made ?30.6M profit, so if they wanted to they could pay the London Living Wage: Cineworld have 4,300 staff in the UK, so to pay all staff LLW would cost around ?15M - in reality they have about 1,000 staff in London, so it would cost them around ?4M. Also, the idea that just because (in your view anyway) a job is low skilled, does that mean those who do that job shouldn't even get the London Living Wage? No matter what the skill level of one's job, we all have to pay the same for transport, food, rent etc.

I take it then you'll be going back and deleting your several comments about Xoco closing, about other LL restaurant related matters not specific to Swadesh and your little divertissement with Lou about the prices at a curry house in Cardiff? Hypocrisy thy name is Foxy.

Foxy, if you're going to drop gnomic comments about Sue's assumed reasons for the closure, telling her those aren't the reasons, it's fair enough for her to ask what you mean, isn't it?

I may be misremembering, but wasn't the issue with Picturehouse that they agreed to pay the London Living Wage - then turned round and said so we're going to sack X% of staff to pay for it?

I was told the same by several policemen with whom I used to play rugby - and they certainly weren't wimpy soft on crime types! They used to say that it's only in the movies that one beats two or more, in any normal matchup you're simply not going to win against multiple assailants. The only advice they added is if possible go down with your back to a wall when you curl up - knees and elbows will protect your front, try to keep kidneys, spleen and back of the head out of the way.

Ah...not sure what else can be done then. We had this problem with our family cats way back in the day, finally tracked it down to a lovely old woman who'd convinced herself (despite their collars and general sleekness!) that they were strays and gave them a second dinner every night. Difficult, I'm sure the people feeding them see no harm in it. We have to, very reluctantly, scare off cats that keep trying to cosy up to us and get in the kitchen when we know damned well they have excellent owners a few doors away! Quite an expensive option but for about ?60 there are GPS collars available so one can see where mog's been going, so you could maybe find where to target a polite note?
-
One can order collars with printed messages on them, something like "FOR MY OWN GOOD PLEASE DON'T FEED ME"?

Do it Phlox, it's so much nicer.

I wouldn't fly, unless you're particularly keen to - I recently went via Eurostar, changing at Brussels, for ?110 return, five hours and change door to door (from St.P Intl). Factor in the time to get to the airport, the long check-in time demanded, time to disembark aircraft etc etc and it's quicker, way more comfortable and civilised and with direct trains to St.P Intl from Peckham and Denmark Hill so easy. If you time it right you might even have time to knock back a cheeky Lambic at one of the Brussels bars! Recommended.

Yes me too it's like an earworm now! Until someone with a better/younger memory comes up with it, a memory from my first ever job working in a shop between school and college: the manager introduced me to a visiting salesman as "our little Swiss army knife..." I later heard that when I'd left the room he'd added "...but all the blades are blunt and stuck in the handle." Blunt Swiss army knife has stuck in my head for a poor jack of all trades ever since!

JAGS on Redpost Hill is bookable for table tennis in their sports hall and open in the evenings. Membership is (I think, Mrs.H is a member, I'm not) about ?45 a month but compared to ?25 p.h. seems a snip - and of course that also gets you access to the pool, gym and as many fitness classes and other sports as you fancy for no extra cost.

Half Decent curry near waterloo / royal festival hall ?

Shaheen Tandoori in Waterloo Road is good - bit of a caff feel but good food and excellent value. Not huge so might be worth calling ahead to ask if they've room for a big group.
