Settle an argument - was there a Costa in Peckham before?!
rendelharris replied to Rowanofski's topic in The Lounge
Apologies if I'm mistaken, I haven't seen it and Costa Coffee don't have it on their website! ETA where is it then? I understood they were going to take over Blue Inc right by the lights? -

"You're a fascist of sorts too you know, like many who seem to think they have enlightened opinions." The hypocrisy is breathtaking.

What has her skin colour got to do with it, or indeed her class? Black working class M.P. David Lammy also voted against Article 50. As for your assertion that she voted because she wants to keep European holidays, it's so far beneath contempt it's not worth commenting on. As for your respect for democracy, if you really respected democracy you would recognise that the referendum was in no way binding on Parliament, as was made abundantly clear in the bill establishing it. You would also accept that in our parliamentary democracy an M.P. has the right to vote in any way she or he sees fit - in this case, of course, Ms.Hayes has voted in a way which reflects the choice of the majority of her constituents. -
Well that was a bloody cracking 40 minutes of rugby, if the rest of the 6N lives up to that standard we're in for a proper treat!

Je suis fatigue - anyone else in ed feel like this?
rendelharris replied to lavender27's topic in The Lounge
You're not alone squire, I feel like that a lot due to a chronic illness (I'm very lucky as I have a very supportive wife and a job I can do from home) - some days I can cycle forty miles, others I can't walk to the shops. Before being diagnosed I remember well the feeling of despair, wondering if it was just psychological (not there's any shame in that if it is), wondering if it would ever improve...if you haven't already I'd really suggest talking to your GP and seeing if they can run some tests for you and/or refer you somewhere for more help. Sometimes it can be something as simple as an iron or vitamin deficiency - another thing worth looking into is whether you're suffering from seasonal affective disorder and something like a daylight lamp might help. You're not alone, don't be afraid to ask for help if you need it - life's too short to suffer unnecessarily and there are things that can be done. Good luck! RH -

Well said Zebedee (obviously in making this comment I am virtue signalling and should grow up and get a life). -
Not the best weather for it but this site has loads of self-guided walks - took some friends on a Dickens ramble based on his directions at Christmas and they loved it. He sensibly includes plenty of pub recommendations! http://www.walksoflondon.co.uk/index.shtml

Many thanks for all the advice, which will be passed on and much appreciated. I've discovered that he can get the same cover elsewhere for ?830, so I suspect he'll go with that rather than having a long drawn out row with Admiral trying to get them to lower their prices.

Connecting East Dulwich to Crystal Palace
rendelharris replied to mmills's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
I don't, and I was cycling five miles to school and five miles back age eleven! But on that particular route it would have to be a very large and very confident eleven-year-old to be safe, I think. -
Interesting...Admiral's claim that this is uncommon would seem to be rather economical with the truth!
-
Thanks, that's interesting - though a bit depressing from a getting the premium reduced point of view!

I've annoyed people on here by being evangelistic about cycling as a way of overcoming the problems of getting round this neck of the woods - but I certainly wouldn't want an eleven-year-old, or indeed anyone but an experienced and confident adult, taking that route. Maybe it'll be better if the CP-Elephant quietway is built, but at present it's just too dangerous. -
Thus far all a call solicited was "Yes that's in line with our standard terms and conditions sir." He's been told to put his complaint in writing so I promised to run him up a letter, just wondering if this is indeed standard practice. They (insurance companies) are buggers! Two years ago Mrs H had a very low speed bump, other driver's fault, no damage to her car, slight damage to the other guy's driver's door. Weeks later, he claimed he had whiplash (from a 3mph bump!). So we had to fill in a great long form with diagrams etc etc. In due course we got a notification from our insurers that they had ruled his claim was false, all good - then come renewal time we found her maximum no claims had been taken away, as they had paid for his car repairs, despite ruling that he was obviously making a fraudulent claim for whiplash! When questioned they said they decided (without asking us) it was easier to call the accident 50/50 and pay up than risk the expense of court proceedings. Eventually we got them to reinstate the no claims and refund the extra premium, but it took many hours of letter writing and telephone calls.

Can anyone advise me on a car insurance problem please? Not owning a car myself I don't know if this is kosher practice or not: last year a mate was in an accident, no injuries but both cars damaged. The other guy claimed it was his fault, he said the opposite. As he had legal cover with Admiral they encouraged him to fight the case in court, so he spent a long time on all the paperwork etc and the case was due to come up last week. A few days before the date he got a call from Admiral saying the other party's insurance company had pulled out of the case, admitted total liability, were refunding the excess he'd paid in having his car fixed and were paying all costs. All good. This week he got a letter from Admiral saying that as he'd had a claim made against him his two car insurance policy was going to rise from ?850 to ?1500 a year. Is this a common thing? Obviously one would expect premiums to rise if one was found at fault, but to nearly double when the other side have admitted liability and paid for everything seems outrageous. If anyone has any experience or advice it'd be most gratefully received. Thanks, Rendel

Very odd...a test to see if emails from "your" address got through her spam filter, maybe? Or more sinister, could the irrelevant one have carried the virus, bot or whatever which opened up her inbox so they could read your mail and so send her the money demand? Which one did she get first?
-
Sounds most likely that your client's email was hacked so the fraudsters knew she was expecting to make a payment to you, then a simple matter to send her a new email in your style but with different payment details?

I haven't seen reports for back in the day, certainly Obama didn't file to run for his second term until April 2011 for the 2012 election. ETA Just looked, Trump at 47 months off the election is the earliest filer in recent memory by a long chalk - Obama at 19 months off next, Reagan and Bush snr latest filers at 12 months out. I guess a president has to get his application in in good time so he can do fundraising, but it looks very much as though Trump's team have spotted a loophole in their favour.
-
Just heard an interesting thing on World at One: of all US presidents, ever, only Reagan, Bush jnr and Obama have been given state visits, and all of them were over two years plus into their presidencies. Which puts the offer of a state visit to Trump, which was apparently proposed just two weeks after his election, two months before he was even sworn in, in some perspective.

Fellbridge House east dulwich estate
rendelharris replied to shell's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Re pipes and rerouting, when we lived in Ruskin Park House (run by leaseholder committee on a long lease from Southwark) the whole estate had a new heating system installed with exposed radiator pipes: we were offered the option of having them boxed in or left exposed. When I asked if I could get my own contractors in to chase the pipes into the floors/walls I was told no as that would invalidate the warranty offered by the installers. Worth checking if that's the case here, be a shame to buy on the basis that you were going to hide the pipes then find you couldn't. -
Is it worth noting that there is no call for a ban on Trump visiting or having dialogue with him, just a call for him not to be accorded the honour of a state visit? ETA posted while nxjen was making the same point above. Actually I've changed my opinion in the last day or so and have come to the conclusion that rescinding the offer now would be unnecessarily provocative. However, it is good that the issue has been raised and so perhaps in future governments will not immediately rush to offer state visits in this way: as the former permanent secretary at the FO said yesterday, it would have been far wiser to wait a few months to see what sort of president he was going to be. Offering a state visit straight away was as foolish as it was to give Obama the Nobel Peace Prize before he'd done anything. The "we don't approve of him banning people so we're banning him" is perfectly logical, people weren't calling for him to be banned because of his nationality, race or religion (as he has done) but because of his actions; had he issued an order banning people because of their illegal actions then there would have been no grounds for complaint. Doing the same thing as someone you oppose is not necessarily illogical: we would disapprove of someone who imprisoned another person, so much so that we would imprison them. Perfectly logical.
