Anyone read any good fiction recently?
Elphinstone's Army replied to yeknomyeknom's topic in The Lounge
lavender, perhaps short stories would suit you better? H.E. Bates, or Roald Dahl a book of narrative poems, to get the rhythm going, or as jacks suggested, Harry Potter. Do you go in the library, they are always helpful. If you read the last page first then you take the pressure off yourself ha ha I can start a book and not engage with it at all, I try again weeks later and it clicks. See, it isn't just you, do not give up. -

If you were truly au fait with the down and dirty you would know that Brazilians are passe and now it is the full baby, administered, nonchalantly and effortlessly in Brixton. Isn't that just like a man, out shopping on Christmas Eve you will be, complaining that there is no choice /mince pies /sherry / totally unsuitable presents left, whimpering outside M&S.

Tiny Little Things That Cause You Irrational Rage

This song was written for someone specific though wasn't it, (Joan Baez) and not as a paranoid rant aimed at anyone he believed was maligning him. Perhaps people are talking about you behind your back - and perhaps they are saying good things?! -
Rosetta, which side do you live? If you are near Barry Road or Peckham Rye Common you could take the 12, and pick up the 211 which comes from Waterloo, up Victoria Street and along the Kings Road and stops outside Charing Cross Hospital. It isn't as though you have to be there for 9am and you get to see some sights. I change buses at St Thomas's Hospital, on the bridge, its an easy streamlined journey then, as it's an anxious enough time without worrying about journeying.

Salsaboy Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Just put my sprouts on the stove. They should be > ready in time. well thank you for the laugh - my erstwhile MIL who cooked us Christmas dinner just the once - did this. She was up at 4 to get the turkey in, the size of a capon (remember those) till it was quite desiccated then piled all the flesh up on a white plate, I suppose now it would be 'pulled turkey' 'while getting the sprouts on' to get them out of the way. Then she tipped them into a colander and pressed them with a potato peeler with all her might to remove the moisture they had just spent 45 mins soaking up - sprouts dear? - no thanks! I was as though she hated them and was teaching them a lesson. Just wanted to share (vent) My mother had a pressure cooker, for Christmas Puddings and leek soup, not at the same time mercifully, the most terrifying noise, hiss and rattle, contrasted with my MIL slow cooker, quiet and deadly. OMG where did I put my therapists phone number

I believe this was the Tradescants garden, and nurtured original plants they brought from their travels, a truly historical garden.

East Dulwich Grove crossing - dangerous drivers!

You are quite right - also the junction with Melbourne Grove, where there was a bad car crash five years ago and occupants had to be cut out of the car when a speeding driver along EDG hit another car crossing EDG. Can the new school be accessed other than from East Dulwich Grove? We need to keep children safe as a priority I would have thought? -

O no, sorry, I should have checked... I was trying to think of somewhere that was sheltered, would not be windswept, and appropriate for an older lady and not too far.

hello Mary, is this excursion in the car, on public transport? give us a few clues, before we inundate you with suggestions, as you will want to make the most of this gloomy day. But sun's out tomorrow! I was going to suggest Eltham Palace, it will take you about 30 mins on the south circular, it's unusual and fascinating and a tea room. Have a happy day with your Mum, wherever you land.

Why is it that plane noise is loud this morning when there is dense cloud and they are above it? 6.10/12 ish this morning I was awakened by a large plane coming in from the east, the direction my open window faces. It isn't the noise of planes flying over that disturbs and wakes me, as the occasional screaming sound of the engines as they ponder over Barry Road. When I moved to CPR I was astonished that planes were flying overhead, disconcerted and anxious. Obviously this is another noise and situation we are required to tolerate - as posters here have pointed out, some days are worse than others. The noise does not unduly affect me, apart from the pitch as they come over Barry Road, as though they are in the wrong gear, or if they are especially loud large and heavy. There is one screaming over now, a lighter plane, 7.13, a high pitched volume, this is what bumps up my 'alert' senses. The windows are firmly closed, double glazed, heavy curtains, the noise penetrates. I subscribed to MissKing's theory of invisible noise but this morning it is simply not working.

When I described, on only 22/8 that we would have a large and powerful organisation on LL (on the Maria's Shop thread) (is that a pun?) I was told not to exaggerate. On Saturday afternoon there was a full length lorry parked outside, facing north, as though in a designated space. Crossing at the lights is then dependent on the green man flashing, and not as an act of faith, as to see left would mean stepping into the road and peering out behind the rear of said lorry which is a hazard.

hello RPC, thank you for this link, now I feel inept, but I did search... I emailed but no response yet so will telephone tomorrow and persuade them to include me. I feel diffident about just turning up. I am not that bold. mary123 this is Open House London weekend 17th September, google it, there may be a building you have always wanted to see inside, and architecturally interesting houses open to the public, nearby.
