  5. indiepanda Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Easyjet haven't officially cancelled our flights yet ... From EasyJet's website - see link below: Due to the volcanic eruption in Iceland, UK Air Traffic Control (NATS) has now closed UK airspace until at least 1pm on Friday 16th. This means that easyJet, along with all other airlines, is currently unable to operate flights in and out of the UK. The disruption is expected to continue, and we are unable to say when operations will resume as normal given the uncertainty of this situation. A number of northern and western European countries are also affected. http://easyjet.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/3917/kw/vulcano/r_id/166 Official or not, it doesn't look like you'll be flying tomorrow morning :(
  6. The Minkey Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Is that incident the one where the dust caused all > 4 engines to cut out? That's the one. That plane flew into the main ash plume, though. The crew managed to restart the engines and land safely but the turbines were so badly damaged they had to be scraped scrapped. Edited to correct an ambiguous typo.
  7. It all depends on what the volcano does, of course, but my 'JetStream' link above points to a seven-day Jet Stream forecast for the North Atlantic area by the Met Office. It doesn't look good for the week ahead, as far as I can see. An Icelandic geologist said that it could keep spewing ash like this for the next five years - nobody knows! Apparently, the slightest trace of volcanic ash will rapidly degrade a jet engine. Jet aircraft that fly anywhere near an ash plume must have their engines overhauled according to an FAA directive following an incident during the eruption of Mt. Pinatubo in 1991. If that is the case, I doubt any airline will risk incurring such a huge expense if it can be avoided.
  8. Are you kidding? It has become an international craze. Search for 'up skirts' on YouTube - it's such a popular subject, you'll be offered a choice of categories!

I know of at least one street that was in East Dulwich but had an SE15 postcode (I don?t know if that is still the case now, though). So, postcodes may not always exactly match the areas - especially near the borders.
  10. Ladymuck Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > I haven't seen any evidence of volcanic dust > on cars/windows etc. - yet. The ash plume is being blown over the UK and Northern Europe at an altitude of about 20,000 feet by the Jet Stream. We're unlikely to see much, if any, ash or dust at ground level for the time being. Commercial aircraft fly at 30,000 feet, hence the groundings.

Fisking is when an opponent's (longish) post is quoted in full but broken down into a series of individual points that are addressed one-by-one, line-by-line. You've just quoted normally.

  14. Hi Shane - welcome to the EDF. The UK is one of the few EU countries where phosphate washing powder is sold without restriction. Dreft, for example, contains 15-30% phosphates. Any ideas about recycling wash water as garden and allotment fertiliser rather than polluting rivers and oceans with phosphate-rich effluent?

Re quoting: if one can respond immediately after another post - fair enough, but when the issue has migrated several posts to the north, or where several other posters have intervened, a brief 'so-and-so wrote what' is essential to provide context without forcing readers to scroll up - especially on this forum where threads are not sub-threaded. IMHO.
  16. Discarded utility bills are particularly useful when used in conjunction with name, address and banking details.

Reading between the lines here - it looks like someone has written a "Kill on Sight" script to deal with this contingency without having to trawl through the archives looking for potentially offensive material. In other words, Mockney has been replaced by a computer!
  18. Misinterpretation is a common complaint - the record speaks for itself in that respect. I?ve noticed the same problem regarding terse or brief (I would say precise or succinct) being interpreted as aggressive or, worse, arrogant. Sometimes a subtle sense of humour or irony is either not perceived or misinterpreted. We are what we are and we do what we do ? I guess.
  19. I say live and let live. If a few people are actively recycling stuff that would otherwise end up in a landfill and making a few quid in the process - good luck to them. I doubt if anyone who didn't need the extra income would bother.

True - but that would also apply to identity thieves, I guess. I have read of cases where criminals dump their trash some distance from their own homes in order to thwart surveillance so the police might have to trawl around looking for the right bags. Dumpster diving is quite popular with private detectives, too.

  22. Hill Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > ... two men ... wearing high viz jackets > using rubbish pincer sticks and torches to rummmage. > I've reported this to the police ... Just as likely it was a covert criminal intelligence operation carried out by undercover police officers. They often trawl through suspects' trash bins looking for evidence.

  24. Whenever we prepared any fresh foods for ourselves, we'd zap some in a blender and pour the puree into a plastic ice tray that was then frozen. The ice-cube sized portions were turned out into Tupperware containers and stored in the freezer. In no time we accumulated a huge variety of multi-coloured cubes. At meal times, we'd steam heat four little cubes, for example, carrot, potato and chicken for the main meal and a fruit puree for desert. Our little one loved the variety.
