  1. I know this has been discussed before but not for a while and I want people to know that it's still happening. Two nights ago I had a knock at the door at about 8pm. A black, slim woman in her late 30s who was very warm and friendly said her name was Shena and she's from number 63 (about 5 doors down). She said " thank you so much for opening the door, I'm so sorry about this but I had an electricity meter fitted last week and it's run out of cash. I've got 2 kids at home, one 6 and the other 8 so I can't get out to get more money for it. Could you please lend me some money just until my husband gets home." She was very good, even called down the street at one point for the kids to get back inside. She said her husband, Jerry, would come round to pay me back as soon as he got in. She didn't even tell me how much she wanted until I asked her, it didn't come across in any way as begging, she seemed so so genuine. She could obviosly see that she had me hook, line and sinker because she said they take minumum ?10. I paid up straight away, she seemed very embarrassed asking and I didn't want to make her feel any more awkward. She said thank you and made a point of asking me what my name was so that Jerry would know. Even after she'd gone, I sat watching telly for a while waiting for Jerry to come round. It wasn't until I realised that I know who lives at 63 and it's not her, that I realised I'd been ripped off. Obviously, she wouldn't be able to charge up her key at home, you have to go to the hole in the wall to do it. I was so stupid but she really appealed to me as one mother to another and I really wanted to give her the benefit of the doubt. Please, no one be as stupid as I was!
  2. 63 a top route. Nice bus lane all the way along the old kent road. Much better than tackling Peckham and the Walworth Road on the 12 - people have died of old age on that bus before its even got to the elephant.
  3. Playing out is a part of growing up and although its a real wrench for parents I think its important for a child's sense of identity to experience some freedom. I remember the excitement of being let out by yourself for the first time and I do not want to deprive my kids of that. Obviously traffic is a real issue but if there is a group of them other safety risks are minimal.
  4. 2 nets on the field near the recumbents
  5. at work on the 18th . would like to attend any training/net sessions or subsequent matches if they occur
  6. Spot on DPF. To consciously move into an area because it is edgy surely is in itself a middle class attribute. And all this crap spouted about the amount of kids in the area now. I think its great that the area at least is making a start at having a normal demographic make up (as the area did in the past) more interesting than being solely populated by transient 20-30 year olds
  7. I haven't played since school but would like to have a knock. Never any good though so would fit into a team of inepts fairly comfortably.
  8. Tessa J sent a letter out today with a space on it to give your thoughts on the proposed school so i would urge all of you to express your opinions to her as well and apparently they will be taken into account at the planning enquiry (or whatever it is)
  9. I am assuming that although traffic very locally will be heavier on the whole a local school will reduce traffic as families currently travelling across se london for the school run will no longer need to.
  10. if you pick your route carefully the cycle to canary wharf can be pretty quiet, mainly residential, only busy bit really is crossing the A2 (which I usually do at Deptford Bridge)
  11. Not sure what the gym is like but Hamlet has 3 squash courts which is always good and a very cheap and friendly bar. Always good for post game refreshments :)-D If you want to swim though has to be the leisure centre.
  12. Hello everyone fairly new to all this. I agree with Louisa in many respects - I think its a shame that all new pubs have to do a full food menu? It definitely detracts from the atmosphere of a place and most of them do not do it well. I admired the EDT for a while as they had shied away from serving food downstairs but even they seem to have caved in. However times do change and pubs change with them, what we think of as a traditional boozer - thick curtains, flowery carpet, double diamond - was also just the trend of the day and i'm sure people complained about them as well once. Even lager itself would have been seen as pretty poncey and look at its populartiy know. So good luck to the FHT if its change or bust go for it.
  13. Its a little further away but my little fella loves the pool in the Pavilion Leisure Centre in Bromley. Its a beach style walk in pool with waves, fountains and slides for the older children.
  14. no they all terminate at london bridge. If you walk/bus up to Denmark Hill you can get to Blackfriars from there.
  15. What a surprising number of Cleethorpians (?) there are in the area. Is this coincidence or were economic incentives offered to move people down in the 80's. As regards El Passo - it's cheap and cheerful and the outside certainly makes a change to the sleek exteriors which are so common these days on LL.
  16. what a shame - always found there food not amazing but certainly good value pub fayre - and by far the best garden in the area. (you mean Dulwich Wood House?)
  17. The mix of services in the area is getting dangerously on the useless side. As property prices go up the lower margin businesses are pushed out and these are the guys who provide ourbread and butter services. We recently got one of those planning permission letters through our door saying the garage on hindmans road has applied to be turned into three houses. For a business like that its just a no brainer but for us - if granted -it would be a real loss as they are a great garage.
