Why not go the whole hog and barricade yourself in your house? It's the only way to be sure.

Mmm actually I do, working in a very similar field. Forums full of jokers posting under pseudonyms will never replace a good old-fashioned 'facts and figures' feasibility study based on demographic and market research. Forums are great for some things and companies do use them for things like this, but due to legislation passed last year (which any company paying for web PR and marketing will be well aware of) it is an offence to not be completely transparent if you are posting for a commercial venture - ie the days of multiple-pseudonym 'buzz creation' corporate logins are over as they're now illegal.

Most of you are statistically more likely to be abducted by a UFO than be a victim of gun crime.
  5. There was a shooting in Greenwich on Friday night also. Posh areas in 'not immune to crime' shocka. Hopefully the exodus back the Home Counties will start now.
  6. I love how people decide what's 'right' for the area on here. A chain like Ann Summers will have a locations buyer, conduct a detailed feasibility study and from this work out whether it's commercially viable to open a store in the area. Canvassing a bunch of outraged types on a forum would probably be seen as a waste of time.
  7. >i think this is > again one of those "spurious" posts. wait, you mean there are spurious posts on here? *ceases looking for suspicious clown *

That's a rather rose-tinted viewpoint that doesn't take in massively fragmented audiences, or the unstoppable march of technology as a way of delivering content. In 10 years there will be next to no local papers, the figures just don't add up and they never will again. Take the fact that you are posting on here rather than writing in to your local paper with your local concerns. Why would you wait a week to read, for example, a review of the Palmerston when you can read hundreds in a matter of minutes on the web?
  10. What I want is an Independent or > Guardian for Southwark. Is that too much to ask > for? Yeah, course. That will never happen. The Independent's days are numbered as it is, I wouldn't be surprised if they go under this year. The Guardian barely breaks even. It's getting to be that investigative journalism's very existence is threatened, due to its higher relative cost c.f. 'churnalist' press release-driven stories that make up most of the papers. Ad revenue is steadily plummeting, which the bigger papers are able to claw back some revenue from due to the high ad clickthrough potential of a national newspaper site, but look at a regional paper or even something so local-specific as the Southwark News and there's absolutely no chance, unless 75% of the paper is ads. And their ad lifeblood (recruitment, property, retail) is, to use a technical term, jiggered.

  12. Just hold his arm up and shout 'RAPIST' - I've seen this happen on tubes loads of times and very effective it is too, they stop doing what they were doing pretty quickly.
  13. Polish lagers are excellent, though you can seemingly pick up Tyskie and Zwyiek in most shops around ED these days but some of the more esoteric ones are worth seeking out - always worth checking the % on the side before you buy, some push the 8% mark....

  15. I'm hoping to get the lowdown on this whole 'Clowngate' thing.

Bossman Wines doesn't sell the Chateau Grand Puy Lacoste 1964, yet I'm still able to force myself across the threshold to find something I like in there...

Tough on the causes of pedantry. Next up: AnotherPaul's insightful explanation of how bikes are a lot like cars, in that they both have wheels.

  20. I won't be truly happy until there is a Bang and Olufsen showroom next to a Waitrose superstore

One of the funniest threads on here (search for it) is where some diligent ED resident decided there was something 'funny' about the hi-fi shop. Probably run by the same clown who patrols the neighborhood abducting children. The present hi-fi shop is OK, they're not going to win any awards for range or brands that aren't the usual though. Which is why I shop at Richer Sounds.

I think some people aren't happy unless ED is packed with shops charging 5 times the going rate for everyday things, it fits in with some kind of aspirational delusion of theirs.

Ok, I meant 'high street prime locations' - they're usually at least 2-3 streets away from all the action. there's currently no hi-fi shop in ED that's of any use, it'd be a good thing
  24. They usually set up in less desirable low-rent areas, which is how they are able to be so cheap. I imagine shop rent in ED is proportionately high, but would be good if there was one nearby...
