You're suggesting that members of the forum would be inclined to remember some useless fragments of description of some unspecified menace when out for the evening? That's a big ask. Why not simplify the message to 'if you're walking around South east london after dark you should be careful'? Because that is probably just as effective. Please don't start beating the usual 'PC' drums again everyone, it's skin-crawlingly uncomfortable to read once you all get going.

Brendan Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > > If they are local kids people may know them and > they could then go to the police. How good would that description have to be, in order to actually have a hope in hell of identifying someone? Clothing descriptions are useless - If I mugged someone in my distinctive Girls Aloud hoodie I'd probably retire it for a few weeks. Skin colour description is useless - Unless the perpretrators happened to be bright green, in which case they'd stand out a bit. Unless one of the kids had a head as big as a basketball and a 15 fingers I'd say it's futile posting anything on here. There's hundreds of groups of kids around here. Many of them harmless. All you're encouraging is members of the public to become paranoid of everyone. A lot of them are already. It doesn't help.

James Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Still waiting for a description... If you re-read the original post there isn't very much of one. What will you do with it - even if a description worthy of a Nobel Prize for Literature was posted up here surely it's a police matter? Some tips (print out and keep): Be careful when walking around late at night Report any suspicious incidents to police

There's nothing bad about turning on your heel and legging it like a lunatic if the situation doesn't feel right - I lived in Kensington in Liverpool for 3 years which makes some of the worse SE London estates look like Hampstead in comparison - a good breakneck sprint in the other direction got me out of loads of scrapes, I've never been mugged or given anyone the chance to try.

My dad remembers gangs of youths with knives at his school in Coventry in the 1950s. You know what they used to say? Bring back national service / hanging's too good for them / string 'em up / disintegration of values / hell in a handcart etc Plus ca change etc etc etc

Is it 'Do the regular indeterminate threats that get posted on here actually do more harm than good for community relations - by making all people who use this forum wrongly petrified of absolutely anyone under 25 who might dress like a good proportion of young people in London?'

Car Thieves Breaking in- East Dulwich-Any other incidents?

Based on what evidence? Your own hunch? I'm pretty sure there are people in ED capable of stealing cars. Or rather in this case, incapable of stealing cars. -
Though I've not seen anyone sowing anything in there, they may well have forgotten...

The thing I find worse than this event is the majority of responses on this thread. Proposing the administration of various types of corporal punishment, the return of National Service and um, relaxed gun control to encourage vigilantism / taking the law into ones own hands. I fear that horrible dystopia far more than I fear gangs of teenagers.

Saturday mornings at Herne Hill velodrome
lenk replied to lenk's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Are there any similar meets coming up? Missed yesterday due to horrific hangover : ( -
I was in there when the football was on last week - busiest I've seen in in the past 2 years. The pizzas looked good, though not quite Gowlett standard. I think it's run by a Polish couple - they have the right idea with the pizzas and such (anyone remember the brief doomed Tapas period with the Comic Sans sign out the front?) and there looked to be some kind of live music kicking off after the football. That bit in the back still feels like a waiting room in a train station and is devoid of atmosphere. ?3 for a pint of Guinness though, you won't find cheaper than that around these parts... might go back another time to see what it's like when there's no match on.

Ah, very useful, thanks. Should have looked for an FAQs section before I posted ; ) Cool, might go and throw myself at in a few weeks' time... -
Anyone ever been? My main questions are: 1. I'm not a beginner. But I'm not a solid lump of rippling biking muscle either - what is the general standard like? 2. Presumably rain = cancelled, right? 3. I have my own track bike, kitted out for roads (ie it has a brake) - do they discourage this and make you use theirs, or is it worth bringing ? 4. On a fitness scale of 1-10, how fit would you say you have to be to survive the morning? (I rate about 6 ; )

They have been for a while... they also have quite a few pairs of motorcycle boots (!) in there at the moment. the little tool kits are supposed to be alright - ?6 as well! OKR store was stocking bike stuff over winter, not been in in a month or so to see if they are still stocking though.

I walk/cycle everywhere in the SE postcode - from New Cross through Nunhead to Dog Kennel Hill taking in North Peckham extending up to Camberwell at all times of day. As a white middle-class bloke with no known enemies, owning/carrying nothing of considerable value yadda yadda yadda, I'm more likely to be kidnapped by mountain goats than be a victim of crime in the area.

PeckhamRose Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > What's wrong with money? > Or what's wrong with people exchanging skills off > their own back? The answer is something similar to the same reason people choose to use open source software such as Linux instead of Windows, and on paper it is a lot more community-minded - the 'bobbins' / whatever you call the currency has to stay in the area - because it's worthless elsewhere.
-
this book is an interesting read on LetsLink alternative currency systems - they tried the 'bobbins' system of payment for services successfully in Manchester in the late 90s. this excerpt talks about the pros and cons of them - superficially they are rather ideallist and hard to upscale - http://bit.ly/bobbins

Horse Meat Disco is on at the Eagle in Vauxhall on Sunday. Not sure how child-friendly it is.
