One argument against CCTV states that it's akin to 'bobbies on the beat', ie a vote-winner and ineffectual. http://www.glalibdems.org.uk/resources/index/Policing%20London

It's not about 'getting over it'. If you're a vitim of crime, my deepest sympathies etc. It's beating the drums and working people up into an abject fear of anyone who isn't exactly like them that is the problem. It tends to result in things like erosion of civil liberties, 'if you're not guilty you've nothing to hide'-type laws, and intolerance. Which is worse than the statistically-unlikely (to ED residents) crimes you're so afraid of.

Because they are really effective. Do you think if we all work together hard enough we can stamp out crime? Because I don't. Maybe one of those fat cats up at City Hall could ban crime completely?

There's always those 'gated communities' you hear about out in Surrey if the fear of being a victim of crime gets too much. I hear they interview everyone for suitability before they let you live there as well. In some ways, it's perfect for many EDites.

Hoe does everyone on this thread know the amounts of money that were being taken out?

SeanMacGabhann Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- >it promotes the idea that you are > about to be a victim every minute Combine that with countless posts on here about 'suspicious man' (no crime committed) etc - if you didn't read this forum I imagine you'd not have a care in the world. Try living somewhere that's actually dangerous for a bit and then come back to me.

See CAMRA's press release earlier today re: just what it all means for booze-only pubs who don't subsidise their income with club nights / upmarket bangers and mash : http://www.camra.org.uk/page.aspx?o=302803

Attempted burglary on East Dulwich Road

Ambitious? They hope to be turning over mansions in Sevenoaks before long? -

I will quite happily hammer hard on someone's windscreen with my fist to get their attention. Scares the living daylights out of idiot car drivers. Of which there are many in London.

I love that you can phone for anything at any time of night and someone will bring it to you regardless of where you live within half an hour, it's why I live in London : )

But... a bike was left outside overnight... If you'd posted saying that you'd left your car unlocked and was amazed to find someone had stolen it, would you expect sympathy?

vallajo Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- You'd be astounded by how many former > stockbrokers/barristers/property developers have > lost six figure sums in the restaurant trade In all my years in the music industry, the ex-stockbroker piling thousands into a band to fulfil that lifelong dream which then failed abysmally was always the most depressing aspect of the job.. Yeah I think the problem with the Duke is that no-one who has owned it recently has stopped for a minute to think 'what pubs are good in London?' 'Why do I like them?' 'How could that work in an area like Nunhead?' It's not a 'destination' pub, it's a local. They should look at what makes a local a good local.

They should theme it on William Burrough's The Naked Lunch. Maybe rename it 'Interzone' and lose the straight-out-of-Mapp and Lucia name...

You simply have to want your bike more than a passing thief would want it. If that means stripping it clean bar the frame when you leave it, then so be it. My bike is locked up with around ?100 of locks - I rarely leave it for more than an hour in Central London, and would never leave it overnight anywhere. There are people in London that actually steal large bits of street furniture to sell for scrap, so a bike is a doddle...

I was minding my own business trying to buy some drugs on my BMX the other day in East Dulwich, when out of the corner of my eye I noticed a bloke fiendishly tapping away on a laptop using the EDT's free wi-fi - though having purchased nothing as far as I can tell. This simply has to stop.

Try dealing with Spanish / US / Italian police I'd rather our ineffectual blunderers than what they have.
