Empty shelves in NI supermarkets, blocked shell fish exports from UK, blocked plants with UK soil attached and now Covid vaccines being impounded in Italy. After a massive debacle with vaccine procurement they seem to be lashing out in a manner that will surely backfire on them. But they probably think the "EU dream" is worth any cost.

If I protect myself and do not get infected then I cannot possibly pass it on to someone else whether they are in my immediate family or not. This consideration is further reinforced because my spouse and I are both in a vulnerable demographic. To enhance this protection, we both strictly observe the need to maintain social distancing, short contact time etc etc. And yes, if one spends protracted time in a high risk environment, then the mask should be discarded after 4 hours. At a retail price of about ?9 each for a decent mask, it becomes an expensive business. From a purely logical point of view, it make no sense to have a mask that is a barrier rather than a filter. A mask is only effective if it actually FILTERS the air and this can only be done by trapping the virus particles within the layers of fabric. This is precisely why the best masks are made from non-woven material. Woven fabrics have gaps between treads that virus particles can easily pass through. If you have a largely impenetrable fabric barrier then the incoming and outgoing air will pass around the perimeter of the mask i.e. it will follow the path of least resistance. This is also why front-line NHS staff receive detailed training on how to fit masks properly. I'm quite happy to pay ?9 for a decent (scientifically proven) mask rather than rely on some speculation about blowing out candles. ?9 is a reasonable insurance premium.

The only effective mask is one that fits closely all round the face -especially over the bridge of the nose. That way all the air your breath is filtered by the layers of mask rather than coming in round the edges. Masks are graded. Do not risk anything less than PP2 (also known as N95). PP3 is best. The "candle bowing" thing is classic fake news. Sadly also, lots of people have jumped on the bandwagon offering home made cloth masks than frankly are totally USELESS. Every one should do thorough research rather than believe in hearsay!

I pay ?95 for a 45 minute hygienist session and I think that's fair in the current circumstances where the room and equipment is sanitised after each patient. Because of the cleaning, each hygienist is able to treat a reduced number of patients. There is also the cost of PPI equipment which is necessary now. I consider ?95 good value and money well spent.

Go research the local businesses that have transitioned to on-line trading in response to the restrictions due to Covid.

The UK opted out of the European Medicines Agency (EMA) to rid itself of the lethargic bureaucracy that pervades the entire EU. The EMA controls the development, evaluation, approval of new drug/vaccines in the EU. So no approval, no rollout. Agreed it does not control when an individual country commences its roll out of an approved drug, but that is beside the point. This gave the UK the freedom to analyse the data and react quickly without numerous group meetings. The EMA plan to have two more meetings in December to discuss this. It will be 2021 before they can progress towards mass vaccinations.

Sure, Trump was a single term President but it was a very close run thing and he polled millions more votes than in 2016. In 2016 he had a simple message of more jobs, less illegal immigration, repeal Obama Care, cut taxation and limit China's trade dominance. These five aims resonated with a large part of the electorate - even though many of them thought (correctly) that he was a fairly dumb narcissist. The odds are that Biden will be a single term President also because he does project clear policy objectives. He is a classic middle-road politician who will be a weak appeaser. He's another Jimmy Carter. If he can't get the red necks working and happy again, it could all get messy. They are all armed and angry.

The USA dominance still exists, just, and I wouldn't have associated the USA with oligarchs. The vast majority of US businesses are owned by multiple shareholders, pension funds etc etc. However there is a huge amount of philanthropy - particularly in the educational and sports sectors. OK, much of this may be prompted by tax concessions but nonetheless, as a percentage of GDP, it's much higher than in any other country I know. Most of the great upheavals in the 150 years have come about because of poverty, deprivation and unemployment. Think of Germany in the period 1929-1933 which gave rise to the Nazis. Also the Russian revolution; it would have happened in North Korea but the totalitarian regime there has total control and was able to crush any dissent. Trump promised jobs and hence the low to middle income demographic voted for him in 2016 and again in 2020 in the belief that he could deliver. Largely he failed but he was able to squeeze a more beneficial trading relationship with China. The long term aim must be to pull back manufacturing that was off-shored to China and Mexico. Take iPhones for example, they are all made in China and Apple makes massive margins because of the low production costs in Zhengzhou. Production could be brought back and Apple would still make billions every year. It's the same with vehicles and vehicle parts where massive volumes are made in Mexico and China. Bringing back manufacturing is the only way to create jobs and maintain stability. To do this on a meaningful scale, the US needs to become more protectionist, ditch WTO terms with China and sign up trade deals with nations. China has abused the WTO rules and how the USA (with the best intentions) must now regret inviting China to become a member of the WTO! On the positive side, despite what Trump has done or not done, billions of people around the world still want to emigrate there. ?Can?t be all that bad!

Could be dry rot in the joists - if the slope is along the length of the joists. Check the floor boards and if they are at right angles to the slope then it may be a joists problem. That said, all joists will be supported by a load-bearing wall so if that wall has subsided then the joists supported by it will be sloping. To eliminate subsidence, check the exterior of the property and see if there are cracks in the brickwork - particularly around doors and windows
