  1. I have to agree with also Nigello my cynical self feels it is a class and ethnic issues, they don?t want a load of ethnic hair shops lowering the tone plan and simple let be honest.
  2. We heading back to the Victorian era like you said Blah they will expect the charity world to pick up the tap.
  3. All the women from DV refugees should rock up to number 11 as he does not seem to have any regards to real people with real issues.
  4. Dedicating specific areas to specific businesses sounds like a way of promoting gentrification, rather than creating a pleasant environment for everyone who lives works and shops in a specific neighbourhood. The whole area needs a deep clean and sprucing up, with mixed retail for everyone. But that shouldn't include moving current businesses off into a quiet corner where they're less visible. We all know how this process goes, the station square will attract big name retail, rents will rise and eventually the dedicated beauty area will be taken on by retail who can no longer afford the rest of the area. Louisa. very good point this happen in Brixton, there was a vibrant market and community when I was growing up and now there is some sort of market at the back and the main retails at the front of central Brixton looks like Peckham is becoming that way. I fear in the next few years only the wealthy will live in London and the low paid and middle income will be living on the outskirts.
  5. Grok wrote As long as they clean up their act and stop all that nasty tumble weave, i don't care. Good one ;)
  6. For me I prefer burial its seems less final and just in case they have made a mistake I will have a whistle to blow.
  7. otta wrote He was stupid to say it, and had no choice really. But the story was blown way out of proportion and I suspect those that took offence probably only did so once they realised the media were interested. Er? no different to Prince Philip then, people in the public eye need to have a thicker skin and man up.
  8. Ken Livingstone 'unreservedly apologises' after saying Durham MP should get 'psychiatric help' in row over Labour defence policy. I don?t think Ken meant to offend him in that way he just said an off the cuff remark he did not realise he actual had mental problems are we living in a world where individuals are just too sensitive.
  9. How do someone manage to nick wheels without being seen, it not the most easy thing to take off are we talking all 4 wheels?
  10. Penguin68 wrote I don't agree that it's a new phenomenon: "razor gangs" were a moral panic in London almost 100 years ago! The razor gangs of the 50s and early 60s were mainly made up of (admittedly young) working men - remember the school leaving age then was 15, going later up to 16 only in 1972. Their strife took place outside schools. Knife violence inside schools in the UK is very much a modern phenomenon (although, as I have said above, many school children then did carry knives). I recall I lovely Giles cartoon showing two groups of Teds, one with razors, the other swinging electric shavers on their leads with the comment, by a policemen watching and doing nothing - 'Now we'll see which shaves closer...' or words to that effect. But how many in that area where dying on a weekly or monthly basics as it is now?
  11. It?s funny how luxury flats I been built in Peckham and then Foxtons is moving in to cash in, properly no social housing or affordable housing for the locals smells like gentrification to me.
  12. A legal challenge to immigration rules that force foreign national to learn English before coming to the UK to join their spouses has been thrown out by judges. The Supreme Court rejected claims that the pre-entry checks were 'unreasonable, disproportionate and discriminatory'. But is it unreasonable for foreign nationals who come to live to in Britain should learn to speak English not just to communicate with others British citizens but also to find legitimate work?

  17. I remember a couple of years ago, I was going to Morrison in Peckham when a homeless guy was asking for change and as I was passing a man was asking him if he was from Eastern European. The homeless guy replied no he was from Lewisham but has hit hard times so the man gave him ?10.00 and walked on.
  18. Charlie Sheen, formerly the highest paid television actor in America, has confirmed that he is HIV positive. The 50-year-old had been subjected to rumours about his health for months. But on Tuesday he went on live television to say that he had been diagnosed four years ago, does the public need to know I feel the partners he might have infected should have been told?

  23. So sorry to hear that Louisa, these sub-humans probably have grandmothers. Wouldn't it be odd if they got attacked? Hate the fact some people feel the need to bring colour card in to this. I'm a black female and I want these girls punished and there parents too! We have no way of knowing what was being said in the lead up this horrid act but the girls should have known better. It's shameful and sad. I wish the woman a speedy recovery.
  24. Police have arrested a 14-year-old girl after an 87-year-old woman was allegedly punched in the face on a London bus. CCTV footage was released earlier on Monday which appeared to show the elderly woman talking to two teenagers, who police said had boarded the bus without paying. The elderly woman can be seen getting up out of her seat, after which one of the two girls appears to hit her in the face. Both girls then left the bus. The victim received a black eye in what police called the "nasty attack on an elderly woman who just wanted to get home" and was taken by ambulance for treatment at St Helier Hospital after another passenger came to her aid. In a statement, a Metropolitan Police spokesperson said a female suspect had been arrested on suspicion of causing actual bodily harm (ABH). "The 14 year-old female has been taken to a south London police station where she remains in custody," the spokesperson said. Police said a second female had been identified by police but "she has not been arrested at this time" I would like to see what there parents is going to if at all.
