  1. Bye bye Vince? I must admit I quite liked him during the credit crisis. But since he's been in power he seems to have lost it. Good riddens
  2. Hacktivist As in: "Amazon brought down by ?hacktivists?" Hacktivist(s) (noun) A hacker, or group of hackers, who carry out 'dedicated denial of service' (DDOS) attacks on websites as a protest or in furtherance of a cause, by using a botnet (a network of computers controlled by one hacker) to overload a website with high numbers of requests so that it stops working. Cited in The Times, today, December 13
  3. Exactly tomk. I didn't get into the right nursery so didn't get into the right primary nor the right junior school nor senior school nor university - so haven't got a Harvard MBA. It's all the fault of work shy teachers closing schools at a whim.
  4. Good point Fliss, school must have been closed due to snow, inset day, teachers' 10 week holidays, staff sickness etc the day I missed that geography class
  5. cmck83 you've missed the point about 35 minutes notice. The 35 minutes notice was given by the school to the parent, presumably because they were the 300th to be notified, some will have been given more notice. The point is that in Britain cold snaps and snow are not uncommon. Schools have all year to plan for them, year after year. There is no excuse. I'm reluctant to suggest go on a fact-finding trip to Sweden or other Arctic Circle countries because then all schools will be closed again with teachers off on another freebie. :))
  6. True Pam50, they might try to light their cigarettes and joints from it and then the teacher will sue claiming some imagined passive smoking ailment.
  7. Burbage, don't you have a certain time (three months) after being tupe-Ed to decide to take the redundancy from your former employer?
  8. Headteachers earning circa ?100k can put their hand in their pocket and claim it back on expenses - job done. If you're worried the electricity can't handle it buy calor gas heaters. It's called planning ahead in the real world. cmck83 Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > silverfox Wrote: > -------------------------------------------------- > ----- > > Bellenden Jo Wrote: > > > -------------------------------------------------- > > > ----- > > > St John's and St Clement's is shut today due > to > > > broken boiler! > > > > > > Pathetic excuse. 9. The question is in this Internet age is whether tell all is somehow empowering, liberating or downright stupidity. There are reasons why some things should be kept secret. As any one with half a brain knows it is only a matter of time before Israel, on behalf of the West, has to, repeat has to, bomb Iran's nuclear facilities. nothing to my knowledge that wikileaks has released contradicts this - if anything the revelations that most of the middle east agrees with this only justifies the forthcoming military action. most of what wikileaks has released is quite innocent. However, certain things should be kept secret. If wikileaks and divulged that D-Day was going to be on Normandy or the Allies had produced the atom bomb we would all agree that that was irresponsible. I agree that when knowledge is used to keep the masses ignorant it should be exposed. I don't agree that Julian Lasange is some sort of liberating force. technology, and disgruntled employees has given him the means to tell tales but responsibility comes with this.
  10. Bellenden Jo Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > St John's and St Clement's is shut today due to > broken boiler! Pathetic excuse. Fan heaters @ ?25 each x 3 per class x 10 class rooms equals ?750 with probably two years usage. Parents having to take time off work with 35 minutes notice, or paying child minders extra equals billions of pounds of disruption over the country and difficult to justify and keep your job. Time teachers got real.
  11. 2.25pm - call from St Anthony's to say school closing at 3pm. Why? Why close half-an-hour early? When asked about tomorrow told they don't know. How are parents supposed to plan and juggle commitments?
  12. Sure I just heard a wolf howling
  13. Sacks of potatoes Rice: Basmati, Arborio, Uncle Ben's Pasta: Penne, Lasagne, alphabetti spaghetti Candles, Matches, Camping Gaz, lighters (for power cuts) Shotgun cartridges in case things get really ugly
  14. Could last for months. I'd better stock up with supplies
  15. True. ?5,000 for legal fees is probably too high a figure as long as it is a fairly straightforward transaction
  16. Tilm2 can you please give me the name of your solicitors because in my experience I've never got away with bills of less than a couple of thousand.
  17. Is it their land to sell - ie freehold? If they have a mortgage the bank/building society will have a charge over it and will need to give permission. As you want to buy it to extend your garden rather than redevelopment it probably won't be as expensive as those examples given. However it will still cost whatever the neighbour wants for it. are there any covenants on the land? Are there any services over the land or under the ground, eg, drains, sewers, telephone cables? if so will people have to go through your house to access these services if something goes wrong to maintain them. how many adjoining neighbours will you now have if you buy this plot. will you need to put up new fences to satisfy more than one neighbour and guarantee via covenants that you will not put up structures on the plot that may affect them? So, let's say to manage to get 15ft long x 25ft wide plot for ?5,000. Add up to ?5,000 for legal fees, searches, land registry, ?1,000 for fences. Only you can decide if that's good value.
  18. Take kettle, preferably black, fill with water and lower into volcano. Works every time but gives the tea a sulphurous taste
  19. Hadn't thought of a rice cooker, or even a steamer. You might be on to something there katie1997.
  20. Witches do it in cauldrons
  21. Egg in pan of cold water, bring to boil, then time for three minutes? Egg in pan of cold water, bring to boil, then time for four minutes? Place egg in pan of boiling water for three minutes? Place egg in pan of boiling water for four minutes? Place egg in pan of boiling water. Switch off heat and let egg stand in hot water for five minutes? Assume medium-sized free range egg, straight from tray/carton, not fridge, firm white of egg with soft yolk ideal for dipping toast soldiers.
  22. I can see how zonal resident's parking permits may help with parking around the station ie, only residents who live in that zone can park there for the majority of the time. As long as it's clearly explained. Once I went to Battersea or Wandsworth to that hi-fi place Oranges & Lemons. I found a parking place about five streets away and got my ticket from one of those machines. As I was walking towards the shop I saw another space become available so moved the car to this new nearer spot with my one hour ticket clearly on display. When I came out of the shop a traffic warden was putting a ticket on my car. I explained I had a valid ticket only to be told the ticket I had entitled me to park in zone H but this was zone G
  23. You're right Sean. Sixteen years ago I lived in Greenwich and borough wide parking permits were introduced. It cost ?70 a year then and after it was introduced it became almost impossible to park anywhere near where you lived.
  24. (From the Evening Standard about the Latvian couple who have been eating at top restaurants and running off without paying the bills) "...Detective Chief Inspector Joe Farrell said police were investigating a series of at least five offences across London. One of those ripped off was The Connaught restaurant where two dinners escaped after racking up an ?800 bill..." http://www.thisislondon.co.uk/standard/article-23898252-latvian-couple-held-after-running-off-from-michelin-starred-restaurant-without-paying.do
  25. Welcome to the debate ManOfTheCloth. As it's late I'd just like to pick you up on one point. You stated: "The debate of science and religion ? absolute poppycock, there is no debate within or between Science and the major Christian Institution, that is the Catholic church..." I beg to differ. Allow me to ignore institutional religion, dogma and tradition and just concentrate on the idea of what God v science means. The concept of 'God', ie monotheistic, in many religions, is of a supernatural God, who has always existed and will do for eternity, who created everything, seen and unseen. As such, God is supernatural, ie above natural laws, not part of nature as such. You say you have no problem with reconciling evolution and the theory of the Big Bang with the notion of the existence of God. I agree. However, science, which seeks to reveal and explain how nature works, causal links, the physical laws behind the creation of the universe, how and why life exists, is by it's very definition opposed to the notion of supernatural existence and events. Given time, science expects to explain all known existence in terms of physical and/or chemical laws. In this very important sense, science and religion are opposed. Science cannot conceive of the supernatural whereas a God can shape natural laws to suit His will. Strikes me as a bit of a problem here.
