  1. rgutsell, I agree with points 1 and 2. Cycling proficiency tests should be compulsory for all before being allowed on the road and some degree of knowledge of the highway code wouldn't do any harm. Far too many people think getting a bike and putting on a hi-vis vest and helmet is the way forward. Many cyclists are simply pests and a danger to themselves

    Pro life?

Contentious stuff. As I understand it one person (not necessarily christian and certainly not christians - plural) shot him. Your point is? http://news.sky.com/skynews/Home/World-News/Abortion-Doctor-George-Tiller-Is-Shot-Dead-Outside-His-Church-In-Wichita-Kansas/Article/200905415292298?lpos=World_News_Carousel_Region_3&lid=ARTICLE_15292298_Abortion_Doctor_George_Tiller_Is_Shot_Dead_Outside_His_Church_In_Wichita%2C_Kansas
  7. Okay, fair enough. My (bigoted)opinions are neither here or there. If we put 'Diversity' before an international jury and said this is the best the UK/GB can offer (voted by the public) would you be impressed as a US/French/Italian judging panel? My concerns are about manipulation - and I'm as susceptible as the next person. What really worries me about programmes like this (and Big Brother, Get me out of here... etc) is the future. The advertising/media world is now all about fragmentising, ie divide and rule. Get a 'community' to talk about things that interest them or even trivia and: a) we know know who you are b) we know your interests (ie your posts, your holidays booked to xx destination, the items you've purchased, your favourite hotel in Paris/Istanbul etc) c) your aspirations (whether or not your credit card limit allows for this) In short your profile. How do I explain to my kids don't get Sky, don't press the red button - don't sign up for ED Forum/Facebook/Twitter - don't get a credit card/HP agreement etc despite all the hype. Everything you do will be monitored. The day I put my card into a cashpoint/ATM machine and the display says 'happy birthday' will be the day I think it's time to head for the cash economy elsewhere. To cut a long story short the hairy Scottish girl with the great voice should have won.
  8. A public vote doesn't mean objectivity (see the mob mentality with the MPs allowances hubbud for example). If I had watched BGT for the last ten weeks or so I'd feel I was sold a pup.
  9. Have never watched this programme before tonight (it was on in the EDT). The result PC nonsense. For years have listened to people saying how unfair the BBC TV licence is. My view? Bye bye ITV and Channel 4/5. You've dumbed down so low there's no way back.
  10. Snots and snails and staffordshire pit bull tails (variable proportions thereof)
  11. Yes Gold Rush Chewing Gum. And Spanish Gold, I was trying to remember the name of that the other day. My wife buys these old sweets at Christmas time from a company in Blackburn I think. The children love the sherbert dips with the lolly, parma violets, rhubard and custard, aniseed balls, love hearts, bulls eyes, slabs of nut brittle and flying saucers. However they're not too keen on the blackjacks which I end up scoffing. I don't know if Hope and Greenwood sell these things today. Also, Robinson's Gollywogs. As well as the badges, my brother had a full pottery football team of gollys which he collected tokens for. Still up in my mom's attic I think. I collected the football cards from PG Tips (I think). I was very proud of my large photo of Roger Hunt I saved the cards for.
  12. Rissoles - dread to think what went into them but we loved them as children. Never tried Brain's Frozen Faggots though, the name put me off.

  16. ibilly99, my eyes have turned black after reading that load of tripe
  17. I was drawn to this out of curiosity when I read it was President Obama's favourite programme. I struggled at first with all the crack-head chic and nilhilism but have to confess I'm now a convert. Looking forward to the creator's new series Treme as well. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/culture/tvandradio/5358857/The-Wire-creator-David-Simon-to-make-Hurricane-Katrina-drama.html

My issue was everything tasted of eucalytus from the dried wood we collected in the bush. Never saw any self-respecting Aussie try any of the fancy recipes above either. Even at The Oaks in Sydney there was none of this marinated nonsense.

  21. True Mamora Man. It just struck me as odd, when I read the article first thing this morning, that not only was the marquee a bit of a social faux pas but it was bound to lead to complaints. My old grandad used to say "an ounce of breeding is worth a pound of feeding"
  22. A marquee wedding in a 100ft Dulwich garden. Why would anyone want to do this? Surely the marquee would take up most of the garden. http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/environment/article6306615.ece
