  3. Tried the dolphin. Not bad. Seaside chips!
  4. Tea time emergency due to going to ice cream parlour rather than sainsburys! Love to know who sells the best chips near the Herne.
  5. I totally agree with everything cloudnine said. I'm just very uncomfortable with doing nothing, and very pleased its being discussed on this and other forums. We are all after the same thing and that is creative problem solving by those in positions to fix the problem. I too am keen to see what the council come up with. It might be starting feeder classes before a school is built, it might be bulge classes, it might be school expansions, it might be a regular bus to the schools in north southwark with more places. Who knows. I just want them to be working to come up with something rather than burying their heads in the sand. Even if your child is in a local school it clearly effects you so we should work together to get the crisis the attention it deserves.
  6. Tell me about it! Amazed that such a big school has such a small catchment, about 0.3 miles, How does that happen, it's our nearest school but not near enough! The sibling thing means my boy is really unlikely to get in now but i am honestly happy for those families who got lucky this year. Rightfully i dont see Goodrich bulging again but it did seem the right thing to do given the very real crisis and respect the council for making a tough decision. Some of the less popular schools have really come up recently so hoping we will get into one of those, not hoping for a top school, just a happy local one. Thing is that might not happen, even a local school in special measures is oversubscribed, something has gone very very wrong!.

Surely all > this 'cramming in' is detrimental to the children? Claudine and EDmummy While i toally understand your concern it is importent to keep the buldge classes in perspective. Plans i have heard so far involve turning very small schools e.g 1.5 form into 2 form schools, which, as noted can improve the school. The one off buldge classes would only be places in successful schools, would be for one year only and would be well funded. This would only add 30 students to the population (e.g. Goodrich would go from 613 to 643), and would not grow from there. I really do understand your concern but these one off buldge classes are exactly that, I doubt your childrens education would suffer and would dramatically improve the lives of many in your community. Please do try to have some empathy for parents facing having their children sent up to north southwark, 4 extra journeys througth london traffic every day, not living near their classmates. I for one would have to dramatically alter my life/ work to accomodate the extra journeys, let alone the extra stress and financial implications. We would be best off responding together as a comunity and campaigning for a new school, the sooner this is build the fewer buldge classes there will be.
  8. I agree, its not often that people get this sort of input from their councillor. He has been a sport and joined the East Dulwich and Peckham Rye Primary school places facebook page too! Have a look and join if the mood takes you.. http://www.facebook.com/home.php#/group.php?gid=120669739604&ref=nf
  9. We have 4 politicians on the page and they have said that they will keep us informed and post the councils latest plans for next year. It will also be a useful group to join if you are going through the admissions process as we can support each other if admissions dont turn our as you hoped come April. Decisions are being made by the council now and the next few weeks so it is a good time to have a show of strength. There has been suggestion that this has been a freek year but anyone who lives in the area knows that next year the demand for school places will be greater not less. Strenght in numbers so do join and invite anyone you think might be interested. http://www.facebook.com/home.php#/group.php?gid=120669739604&ref=nf
  10. I should read it. Stopped reading baby related lit after someone gave me 'a lifes work' and scared the heck out of me during my first pregnancy. Ok book bad timing.
  11. I'm sure your right, a new school would be good enough.
  12. Laurie Eggleston Wrote: ----------------- Parents shouldn't have the anxiety every year over getting into a local school. I totaly agree, but parents do have huge anxiety over school places and many of us can see that the pressure on places will only get worse next year. I agree bulge classes are necessary and am reassured by the knowledge that there will be more next year. It would really put parents at ease if we could know your plans for dealing with the upcoming crisis next year, really looking forward to hearing from you on this forum and thanks for joining the facebook page. East Dulwich and Peckham Rye Primary school places, its a group page and (tricky to find, try this link) http://www.facebook.com/home.php#/group.php?gid=120669739604&ref=nf PS The new school could start at year 2/3 so that the older siblings could be moved closer to home and be with their younger siblings?
  13. That co-op is fab. I'm a real fan of William Rose but would still always buy co-op chicken. It tastes like chicken!
  14. This is such a tricky one. I eventually let both my boys 'cry it out', mostly because every 2h wake ups were not helping anyone. The older one was 9 months and it felt ok, when he cryed he got a bit angry but not for long. The younger one was only 6 months and i do regret it, he sounded sad, and although i did go to him but not pick up i still feel it was a bit mean and if i could go back i would have given it a few more months. When we made our decisions we based it on weighing up the temporary distress to them vs them getting more sleep, having parents who were not just zombies and them learning how to get themselves to sleep, a skill which would help them for life. I know of the book and have not read it (might read it now), does Sue Gerhardt consider the damage to the nervous system of crying it out v the damage to the nervous system due to stressed parents, lack of sleep etc?
  15. They are all allocated a month ago. And sounds to me that it has been a cash of they who shout loudest. A unified approach will support all of us through this over the next few years. Try this http://www.facebook.com/search/?init=srp&sfxp=&o=&q=East+Dulwich+primary#/group.php?gid=120669739604 Or the one helpfully posted on the other thread. The group page is now called East Dulwich and Peckham Rye Primary School Places facebeook page. Catchy !!
  16. Thanks Damzel Any tips / suggestions from people greatly appreciated. Feel free to promote this site anywhichway. PS We have got two politicians so far and its only been a week!
  17. I know its tricky to find. Just search groups for east dulwich things and it is there somewhere.
  18. After talking to the Lib Dems on Tuesday i'm fairly convinced they are all talk and not taking this thing very seriously. Are they parents?, i know this should not make a difference but how else could they be so blase about this problem? I was talking to someone with excellent knowledge and experience of local campainging, and we are in a 'swing state'! It might be an idea to run as an independent local party on the issue of local schools and local issues. Would that be of interest to anyone? He did a quick recky on numbers of parents affected over the next few years and was quite optimistic about the impact this would have. Would that be of interest to anyone?
  19. This is a result of the organised campaign backed by Tessa Jowell. Will kids be looked after in the same way in future years? Bulge classes are a necessry emergency solution but do mean more crowded schools. The odd extra class in a school is ok for a couple of years until a new school is built, but is only ok while we are waiting for a new school. We need a long term solution. We need promises of local school places and a new school! Looks like it will have to be on Holmstal playing fields. The council need to be brave enouth to make this move.

  21. Now given a very un snappy name! East Dulwich and Peckham Rye Primary school places face book page
  22. I really dont think we should accept the north south thing as an excuse. As it is just that an excuse! They have seen this shift happening over the last 4/5 years. And its not going to just go away. Does it mean parents in south southwark should have to brave rediculous london trafic to get to these schools? For many including myself those obsticals would actually be too big. My childrens childcare (my mum) could not do this 4 times a day (with a baby in tow) and their childcare and my life would have to totally change (which we cant afford or want). The only reason everyone eventually found a place is that they ran an organised high profile campaign which had the backing of Tessa Jowell. Not everyone will have that next year unless we get organised
  23. My little boys and i go and say hello to them most days. V v special.
  24. Lots going on at 'The Elms', the house on the corner of the Rye. Anyone know if it is going to be anything interesting.
  25. If you live 300m from your school of choice you wont have to worry. If you are worried or planning a family or want to support other local families come and join the group. It really was born yesterday! We need some assurances about places until a new primary can be built. Local councils do monitor this type of thing so it is a chance to show the level of local concern. Over 1000 EDF users viewed the thread on primary school places just need all of them to join to show it's a hot issue and then invite councillors to join. Thanks
