Normally this is police tracking an intruder/ etc. from above and informing ground based police where the suspect individual is - or looking for a suspect individual after report, e.g. of a break in or someone suspicious in the area - particularly when seen in or crossing gardens. They often use infra-red (night vision) technology to track, so you may not see search lights. Unless this results in an arrest (and often not even then) this will not be reported in news media. The noise (and vibration) is annoying of course, but reassuring they have the technology and make the effort.

hello, thanks for mostly helpful comments. This was not a hovering helicopter, we are high up so could see it was looping clockwise around Herne Hill high above KCH and around Nunhead then Overhill Road and arou d we could check its circle over and

over.

The clatter of a helicopter does not bother me but this was rhythmic and repeated. However the Ovaltine worked and I awoke sweet tempered as usual !

Does anybody know if the heli-pad on KCH has opened yet?

Given the areas mentioned these could be proving flights to assess the best ingress and egress routes, navigation points and emergency landing spots. They would take place at various times of day to assess different light conditions and wind patterns.

I'm not sure if the Air Ambulance operates at night in the London Area..

I think that only Police Helicopters operate at night over built up areas..

Note..

Air ambulance night flights are set to begin. The East Anglian Air Ambulance (EAAA) has expanded its service to include flying to emergencies during the night.

    • Thanks penguin  always wondered about that place and that’s way more info than I ever thought I would get  (used to live above a gun nut on friern road - he would tell me nothing)
    • There was a Saturday afternoon crowd of enthusiasts, and at other times the owner might have been off acquiring stock. He also repaired air guns, which he also sold. He stocked edged weapons, uniforms, including antique uniforms, air guns and ammo and starting pistols and shot. Some medals and other militaria. Quite a lot of ex service chit chat on a Saturday. I had an amateur interest, didn't deal a lot, in English pattern swords and other mainly 19th century militaria. And made some good purchases there. I'm afraid WWII and later events was the major focus of most of the regulars.
    • Did anyone actually venture in to that place? I recall it always being closed/very uninviting!
