I was a Labour candidate in Village ward and can confirm that we established that there were paid deliveries made on behalf of the Lib Dems. It was clear which were done in this way because the distributors were carrying bags with "Letterbox Marketing - 020 8940 0666" printed on them. They were happy to volunteer their rate of pay - which was exactly the same as davidh reported at the top of this thread.

Not sure why davidh got so much stick just for pointing out a straightforward fact. Maybe now that the election is behind us there might be a more considered take on this issue?

Duncan Chapman

So dc if this were the case the LD's were paying a company to arrange leafleting and the payment of the leafleters(?) would be from that company not the LD's. davidh made a point of stating that the LD's were paying people less than the minimum wage. Where is the evidence that these people were being paid by the LD's and not the company which employed them? Which 'fact' is so 'straightforward'?

My other half used to deliver the free Southwark Sparrow newsleter a long time ago ( during the reign of the last Southwark Labour Council) we were hard up having been given the option of having no job or being forced to down grade with a ?2000 pa drop in salary. Since other half has a disability - a job was more esential than the pay. Southwark Sparrow paid around 2 pence a copy delivered and if there were any subsequent leaflets/flyers in with the paper, he got ?1.00 per 100 sheets. He would spend several hours each weekend delivering to Burbage and Stradella Road, and another couple of roads off Half Moon Lane. He usually made about ?20 per weekend - which we put towards our grocery bills. OK it was about 10 years ago or such, you could argue that Southwark Labour Council were paying rubbish 'wages' but in fact this was contracted out to local agents who then employed casual deliverers. You got a free delivery bag though!

We have delivered leadlets for our political parties and local residents associations for many years and not received payment.

Duncan,

Personally, I was giving DavidH quite a bit of stick because, as far as I could establish, he was being a disingenuous git. "Oooh, these poor underpaid Polish workers" - yeah, right. He was only concerned because it involved LibDem leaflets.

Is he following up with the right authorities (that does not mean his mates in the local Labour chapter) to ensure that the minimum wage is being paid to the workers?

Now that the election is over, if you, Duncan, want to follow this up and check if this company is underpaying its workers, then you have my full backing. But, if you want to make an issue out of this to use as a stick to beat another political party with, then I suspect you will get much the same response.

PS I hope you weren't the idiot racing around in the car harassing the other leaflet deliverers.

The other thing Duncan, is that I hope you're not so much of a wally to realise this tactic is a double edged sword?

If it transpires that leaflet deliverers (perfectly reasonably) get paid minimum wage, it will also transpire that Labour use them too.

To be honest, your tactics throughout this campaign have been foul. You've called Lib Dems racists allied to the BNP (and the deleted the posting when you were caught out), you've tried to suggest Kevin Donnelly's unsubstantiated smears should go uncriticised, and now you're tripping out on yet another smear.

I mean, come on. Honestly.

When you look in the mirror and try and find reasons for not being elected do you also make things up?

You didn't get elected precisely because you do things like this. People smell a rat. They don't want underhand deceitful backstabbers in power.

The councillor who polled highest in ED was an LD candidate who impresses by his hard work, concern and accessible manner. He wasn't a shitty little slagger.

    • Some of you may have never been to a post office on a Saturday when one or more people are posting their ebay parcels and you wait yonks.  Just one of those things.  I'm more concerned about the speed of the Royal Mail.  I may start a thread on this!
    • If you're going British, Marks and Sparks do a fantastic Cornish Cruncher Cheddar (get the three year old if it's on offer) and a Stilton/Stichelton which are wrapped in something more like wax paper.  I'm pretty sure they used to do a Stinking Bishop which had minimal plastic wrapping, as well.
    • Thanks to everybody for the responses. Agree that £50-60 is somewhat excessive so supermarket is likely to be the route we take.
