Smug middle class twat or responsible parent?

I am puzzled. You know those parents who stick their kid in the baby seat on the back of their bike - then dart in and out of traffic? Are they being a green, responsible parent? Or a smug middle class, dangerous twat? Just, asking, like.

I'd put it down to them being twats but I didn?t realise seats on bikes are a middle class thing. Is it because you need a degree in structural engineering to install one?

I have seen some cyclists - one yesterday near Dulwich Park - with two kids - one on a seat at the back and one between the handlebars and the cyclist. I think it was a little seat perched on crossbar. Think it would be better to get one of those Danish Christiana bikes with the container in the front if you need to transport two kids around.

i think at the front or above the back wheel are classless and timeless- but the ones lower down especially at the back are dangerous but pretty safe in dulwich park - not to round busy roads with.

Totally irresponsible. Exposing those poor children to all the passive cigarette smoke from people standing outside offices, pubs, hanging out of the windows of their own flats etc. I'm surprised social services haven't got involved and demanded they get back in their cars. And they wonder why the child has asthma!

Nothing to do with being middle-class; just sounds dangerous. Whether with a child on the back or not.

However, I cycle with my son on the back of my bike and I'm middle class: living where I do, with a child and a bike, not to mention the organic veg and the Guardian poking out of my basket. And I go very carefully, thanks.

I think the idea with the trailer type that's on road level is that the child can't fall off and so are 'safer', but to me they are too dangerously close to car wheels.

I could not agree more strongly with silverfox and citizenED. You wouldn't catch me cycling along on a bicycle with a poppet strapped on teh back. What do we pay the help for?

Actually silverfox, I was more concerned about them being totalled by a lorry.

That's too drastic a cure for their asthma, northlondoner.

Another reason why it's irresponsible is that it's adding to the obesity problem by strapping the little mite into their seat with nothing for them to do. The solution would be to put the parent/guardian/nanny in the seat and get the nipper to do the cycling.
