The Cherry Tree

I thought I'd take my friend here to start her birthday celebrations by taking advantage of the ?10 Mon-Fri lunch offer advertised on the website. I was told that although it was a Friday it wasn't in fact available, and depends on the chef's whim. From what I could understand, it's a matter of how much food he has available (although the entire menu was available if you paid the full price).

I explained that it was a special occasion, but they made no concessions - not even a drink for the birthday girl - despite this offer being advertised. (I was told the website applied to a whole chain of pubs,so might not represent what they're doing in Dulwich. However, only The Cherry Tree East Dulwich is mentioned on the site and the web address is thecherrytreedulwich.co.uk so that doesn't seem to be true!).

I appreciate that hitches happen (although the mood of the chef seems a strange basis to run a business) but was taken aback by their lack of good will. In my experience, most places go out of their way to make someone's birthday special. It seems an unfriendly and short-sighted way to run a pub. The food was lovely. A shame the attitude didn't match up.

Been a few times... 4-5 .

On 2 occassions no Real Ale out of their selection of 4. Evidently due to Chiller Pump being broke..

Real Ale / Chiller Pump. ??? What's that then..

I assume Hand Pumps are not actual Beer Engines but elecrically assisted fake hand pumps. ?? I simple do not know.

No food on 2-3 nights. 20.00 - 21.00 ish.

It's a real shame.. Pub is nice enough.. Staff are really nice. But place deserted..

One Thurday.. 21.00 No real ale .. No food ... 3-4 customers..

Back to EDT. Beer.. Food... rammed..

No idea what the answer is.. I think it's just the place..

Foxy.

    • A shout out for Mark, owner of Pure Plumbers. 07970 971510 They're well established in the Sevenoaks area, but have recently started doing more work in SE London.  Did some v quick and efficient bathroom and boiler fixes for me; have also seen some of the bathrooms he's built, which have a nice attention to detail. • Totally agree regarding not supporting chains. Gail’s was fine but last time I went in Feb this year, actually walked out Fayetteville looking at menu and waiting 15 minutes to even get glass of water and not busy at all. Staff gone down hill - sooner it goes the better… Always prefer to support non chains - so many lovely places with good food to choose from with pleasant staff who know about customer service and sadly, non English which says a lot for our culture, pubs are also becoming abit of a hit and miss affair but maybe just unlucky. At the end of the day all about the chef. Still abit unclear where new place is located - is it down the road from Goose Green where parade of shops are before Peckham Rye?
    • Surely only where the local businesses offer clear advantages, otherwise you are rewarding what should be failure. I want to be served by a better bakery than Gail's, not a worse but local independent one. Certainly give a local independent some time to get the offer right, but don't buy goods which are worse and or more expensive just because the outlet isn't a chain.
    • Let’s just boycott all chains in favour of local businesses.  Places like Gail’s popping up everywhere has a very damaging impact on small businesses. It’s just the same as the new empanadas place but on a bigger scale. I’ll say it a million times more, we hold the power with our choices. Let’s use our power to look after ourselves and our environment (which includes small local family businesses). And yes, I also love Chacarero.
