Just seen an ad for a new series on BBC3 'Peckham Finishing School' - does anyone know about this!?

'In a climate of increasing economic polarisation and a widening social class system, four young women from Peckham in South London have the opportunity to meet their affluent counterparts and spend 9 days showing them the reality of life on the other side of the tracks.'

Great post there Huggers. Just like Mickey Flanagan says about living in East Dulwich, "there are people in just the next postcode who are still eating white bread".

Such kids can already see life on the other side of the tracks: they watch Desperate Housewives don't they?

What's wrong wiv'em.

And the posh lot watch EastEnders, don't they?

Sorted.

I hated this show and I did see it. It was offensive cheap television, and I watched it because it was about Peckham.

Of course we see those (types of)girls and poverty and so on and on, but we all know that poverty is in many places including Chelsea (World's End, for example), but Peckham has fabulous architecture and a very active Society and Choumert Square and lots of people from all professions live here as well as single folk, families, a big artist community, and it's a microcosm of society in itself. The programme makers even acknowledged that it had - actually I forgot how many - different races of people from so many countries but then implied that that was a bad thing. Rye Lane is our centre / hub, and I am not keen on Rye Lane, though I am not frightened or appalled at it. It's Little Africa. And that's fine.

But the programme makers wanted to make a cheap point and the Peckham girls were rude, and offensive, just as if they found themselves in Virginia Water they'd be the subject of rudeness too. Oh how ironic they showed them going to church without voicing the question that if so many people go to these 43 or however many churches, how come there's still so much crime?! Godfearing my ar$e!

Anyway, I still love Peckham and Peckham Rye, and the programme made the production company look bad, not Peckham.

    • Its that time of year again, past Christmas day and late delayed cards are turning up. How late are your cards arriving ?  Last year I had one delivered 4 weeks late. Can that be beaten this year ?
    • Sadly, a lot of businesses didn't invite reviews on the EDF at that time due to a number of "negative nellies" that would take delight in posting unfavourable comments, often despite never being to the business in question.  No matter how good the place was, some posters would find fault that wasn't there "don't lile the colour of the bidet set in the private bathroom, avocado 😅" Can hardly blame businesses at the time for not wanting reviews on here, thankfully that has mostly changed now.
    • Was that the Hare Krishna place? I can't remember exactly where it was (or maybe still is) but it was somewhere around Oxford Street.
    • The "for sale" section on this forum lets people offer things for free or cheaply. And the "wanted" section let's people ask for things they want or need, for free or cheaply. There are also existing schemes like Freecycle, and also local  food banks. And there is (or was) a local scheme where you can bring things to be repaired free. I think it is/was based in Nunhead. Isn't that simpler than having a barter system? You might have something to give away, but the person who wants it might not have anything you want. Or have I misunderstood how it works? I can see that offering services free might not fit into existing schemes, but depending on what they were, what would happen if things went horribly wrong eg someone wrecked your house? Sorry if the above sounds very negative.
