I've been in East Dulwich for about a month now. I've got a friend who is interested in moving to the area and whe wants me to show her round. The problem is, I haven't had time to have a proper look round myself yet. So, what should I show her to prove that East Dulwich is lovely, and a good place to live for a very pretty Mexican girl.

Firstly welcome to East Dulwich, secondly you can use East Dulwich as the base to vist some of the surrounding attactions:

Dulwich Picture Gallery

Horniman Museum

Peckham Rye Park

And of course show her our excellent array of bars and restaurants. How about you tell us all which night you're showing her round the area, we all wait in a pub and when you enter we're you best friends, pat you on the back and say things like "damn good to see you", buy her drinks, offer her our seats, crack jokes about Zapatistas, make her feel at home (!?) etc. Never fails.

And tell us what you look like, so when we see you with her in the street we can nod and say hello, how you doing? Have you settled into the neighbourhood? You look well have you been working out? "You must pop round sometime the family are dying to meet you, little Jos?'s even made you a Welcome to East Dulwich cake.." etc etc

How could she resist such a community?

If you've got a car drive over the hill between Honor Oak and ED for an amazing view of East Dulwich and the whole of the city of London. Canonbie Road off Honor Oak Road I think is the best one. We were there at midnight on new years eve - was really clear and you could see all the fireworks.

No ulterior motives there then dave.

Agreed with all_star, one tree hill is a pretty cool spot, liz the first apparently stopped there once, but it's a newer tree now, but it's not really ED. Peckham rye and common, the japanese gardens there, northcross road for funky shops, spot of lunch in Franklins (devilled kidneys available from the bar mmmmmmmm). Then a pint in any of the places down from there, more food, perhaps a chinese or gasp an indian, followed by cocktails at Black Cherry or liquorice.

She'll be good and tipsy by now, and it's getting late, but of course, no ulterior motives ;?)

Uurgh.. Laura! "Dulwich does not need to sell itself, the fact it is..." well hopefully not the kinda place where people rap each other on the nose with a pointy finger!

Surely the best bit about ED is the charnimg residents? I'll see you crazy kids in any watering hole you care to mention ;-)

    • You'd need to get a proper quote (or three) for instance removing a cast iron bath is a very different job from removing an acrylic one. Again what pipe work will be being joined into - matching old imperial pipes with modern metric ones is different from like to like, as is dealing with a copper or an iron distribution system. The amount (area) of retiling required is an issue, as will be the state of the wall behind the tiles. It may of course all be very plain sailing, or not. Have a first look at plumber recommendations on the relevant pages on this site. If it's all easy then 3 days work may be sufficient. But it could be a week if there are snags.
    • Hi. Can anyone suggest a plumber for the job below? Replace bath tub with a shower enclosure, putting pipes to showerhead behind wall, re-titling damaged/removed tiles Also any idea of the costs involved for the labour as we will buy the items required?
    • Aria came round to fix my tub drain when I'd messed up the seal. Came within hours, fixed the tub, and ran a bath to make sure it was okay. Here's where the fun starts. While he was over, I asked him questions about the rest of the plumbing round the house. I had just moved into a Victorian home that was previously being rented. Unsurprisingly, we found another leak in the tub and a drip in the kitchen tap.  He came back the next day to put a better pipe in my bathtub and replace the kitchen sink. Painstakingly figured out how to replace the hard-to-access kitchen sink without cutting through the wood panel with the help of his builder friend, Mark. Answered all my questions and clearly knew his stuff. All this right before Christmas holidays!
