What should we wear Mr.Lush? Do you have nylon stockings or is something else the new rage? It being DM's place, I'd want to be dressed as one should for such a venue.

Started working life as a clerk, then did residential child care, then admin work -various promotions. My then boss heard me discussing psychology with another colleague and asked about my academic career and was surprised that I had not been to uni. She got me on day release at Birkbeck College to do a Diploma in Urban Community Studies ( paid for by the firm)

In the meantime, I did lots of voluntary work Gingerbread, Residents Association, Political Party, Community Centre, Disability groups.Worked as a casual market researcher in social policy for a few months.

Took redundancy and fulfilled a life long ambition - a degree followed by a post graduate professional diploma ( funded in part from my redundancy pay). More voluntary work including trustee in a counselling organisation. running workshops, mentoring individuals etc. My voluntary work was instrumental in getting a post graduate diploma at Goldsmiths, as well as the fact that I had and still am, caring for 2 disabled relatives, my grandchildren (during holidays I help out etc).

I work as a social worker with adults - despite the stress and paperwork, onc of the most interesting/frustrating/rewarding/no 2 days the same/heart breaking (at times)- but love the work.

    • My mum (91 years young!) well remembers going to Austin's as a child, which she described as an 'Aladdin's Cave'!  She absolutely loved it - and is still a shopping fiend to this day (I 'blame' Austin's 😉). Going back up Peckham Rye, passing Austin's on your right hand-side, just past Phillips Walk (so not far from Austin's at all), I believe there was a British Relay Wireless shop - this would have been in the late 1930s/early 1940s.  Does anyone know anything about this? My grandad (my mum's dad) used to manage it; it was severely damaged in The Blitz - but I am having trouble locating it.  Mum's memory is dim (she was 6 at the time); she originally thought it was in Rye Lane, but we think now it was in Peckham Rye just up from Phillips Walk (originally Phillips Road).
    • Thanks everyone, this will need to be reported again as the fox was still mobile and walking down the road when last seen... hopefully someone will spot and report.
