Help with TV - we're leaving SKY and I don't think I understand the options

Recommended Posts

We're leaving Sky as the deals expired and it's now extortionate. Should have done so ages ago, but am there now!

What do you do? I've thought about no TV at all, but it's not really practical - bf likes football, I like watching the odd film and channel flipping (when I finally sit down!)

I have one smart TV and one ordinary.

I was thinking of getting a NOW TV box and paying a small monthly subscription (with no contract). I also have Amazon Prime and I understand you can get a dongle that you can make a non smart TV smart so I can show Amazon Prime downloads on it, so can watch films.

I'm not very clued up so would like to know if I'm on the right track, or if there is a better option I am unaware of.

Thanks EDF-ers!

The NOW TV box is made by Roku and is essentially a locked down, budget variant of their entry-level model.

We have one and it's excellent for the price, although I don't subscribe to anything, just use it for youtube and iPlayer. You can't use it for Netflix or Amazon, as it's subsidised by Sky, they don't want you viewing competitors.

The Roku stick, which is around ?35 on Amazon, is better; as it's independent, you can get Sky Sports, Amazon, Netflix etc. and I believe the picture quality is better.

Chromecast is a simple little dongle that plugs into a tally and allows you to browse on your iPad, phone or similar then cast in full HD (providing your telly supports it) to your television

Iplayer, netflixs, now and other services are availed providing you have paid their subscription.

We use NOW TV and you should take a look at it. There is no contract so you can buy a months Movies or Entertainment pass with no obligation to carry on once it's expired. You can also buy Sky Sports passes for NOW TV boxes by the day week or month. The box costs ?20 and comes with a free pass for entertainment/films/sport. Picture quality is fine for me but could be better when I occasionally watch football. Bear in mind you need a decent broadband connection and for any box that's only wireless, a decent wireless signal. I think I still have spare NOW TV box if you want to borrow it PM me.
I went with EE for broadband and their TV - essentially its freeview, but a recordable box (up to 4 channels at a time) and access to Now TV, catchup etc etc. It's pretty decent for the price. Doesn't access Netflix or Amazon though.

You don't have to return the box - usually you own it (which is also why they try to charge you to fix it if it goes wrong!). That's also why you see so many for sale second-hand.

Last time I left Sky (4-5 years ago) the recordings did not work. You need a valid Sky card plugged into the box, this tells it what you are subscribed to and therefore what you can watch, even for recordings. I'm not sure whether freeview channel recordings still work. I'm back with Sky now and had this problem when I gave up BT Sport - the very second my BT broadband was turned off, all my BT Sport recordings became absolutely useless. It would be the same for leaving Sky entirely.

Although I think the ownership is different with Sky Q

(for the future)

They'll still charge to fix though B****ds ;)

Tell them you are cancelling and moving house....

Then get your partner to sign up under their name and on their bank account...

We did that and got the full package with moveies, sports for ?30 a month on a moneysaving expert link.

When my initial 12 months was up and the price was hiked up to something eyewatering I gave them a call and they gave me a load of deals to bring the cost right down again. The guy I spoke to was great and I'm not tied into a 12 month contract either.

    • I'd reread what you posted and try to summarise.  It just comes across as a rant.
    • Just shows, to me, once proud to be a citizen of UK.. now.. well if we pay/contribute to services - nhs, police, fire etc and folk who have made this there home - no matter what creed or culture.. for the love c of God, can someone  please explain to me.. how we have working royals who like them or not, have tried and continue to actually support and make a change and then we have Andrew.. who just destroys everything.. not just him, or royalty but his own children..  I had great admiration for The Queen - and respect.. as have a huge number of people.. but.. these old traditions where gosh.. live rent free and can’t get chucked out until I believe 2070? From what I scanned..well he has and continues to have it all.. has to go thru what old rules? Etc.  doubt very much he has even kept the upkeep maintenance up on his abode.. and do the shite keeps on pulling up.. What has Andrew done for UK or for that matter since he was 20?? Do please tell me       Totally off topic, before anyone jumps down my throat.. I just do not get how anyone is proud to be British at this point in time. Whoever is in power, seems to be able to help themselves to the public purse with no redress at all - Covid is a great example of lining of pockets.. Millions  given to Rowanda, so one is led to believe, to help with refugee problem and one can’t get a plane load off!  I simply do not get it at all. Use of food banks in UK growing yearly, homeless as well, nhs, police, fire service etc all on their knees..
    • Have applied the green roof at a number of properties and no issues you are concerned about detected. Have issues with cats defecating in the vicinity, however, they are not selecting the green roof specifically. Use decent compost, slow release fertiliser specific for green roofs, and lay it methodically not leaving blank patches. It looks amazing when cared for and adds value.
    • Some suggestions for mandatory action might include:- 1. Permit retailers to display facial images on the premises  of previous offenders at their local store. 2. Sound an alert and display images on screens inside the store when the FR flags up a person entering who is on the national database of shoplifters. 3. Physically bar recognised shoplifters from the premises. Should they attempt to force entry then charges should be pressed under aggravated trespass, which  a criminal offence under the Criminal Justice and Public Order Act 1994. 4. Change the law to allow retailers to have enhanced powers of citizens arrest. What would you suggest? The UK seems to have the most lenient policy towards shoplifting , probably because of other demands on the police force. On the plus side, they may have more time for it now that non-crime hate incidents will no longer be investigated. Other countries, such as the USA have much more sever punishment as does Singapore where repeat offenders or aggravated cases can be sentenced to up to 3 years in prison, a fine, or both.
