Brendan
Good question that. I actually have no idea. Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/1291-malt-whiskies/page/2/#findComment-34878 Share on other sites
mockney piers
very good point, i don't think i ever really drink whiskey in pubs, normally in hotel drawing rooms, after a wedding, with a nice cigar. Not that I can have the cigar anymore. Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/1291-malt-whiskies/page/2/#findComment-34884 Share on other sites
Jah Lush
I'd say the Dog because I've certainly drunk Laphroig, Oban and one or two others in there in the past. And, because it's the same owners The Plough probably has the same stock. Ted Max
The Dog sounds about right. I would expect the guys at Hoopers and Gowlett to keep a couple of half-decent bottles as well. Research is needed I feel. Ah well, it's dirty work...Thing about whisky is, it really is at its best drunk pre-dinner or at least when still sober. Yet I wouldn't mind betting we all tend to start on it when we've had too much wine/beer already. Late at night with taste buds destroyed. We have a night cap and then blame the good malt for the terrible hangover in the morning, not the gallons of beer that preceeded it. Brendan
I know exactly where you coming from Ted. Many has been the night that I?ve decided after way too much of everything else it is just the time to share the single malt around liberally. Next morning ? fuzzy memories ? stumble downstairs ? 3-quarter empty bottle of Glenmorangie balancing precariously on the telly ? Laphrioag and coke spilled on the carpet ? wineglass full of untouched whiskey with cigarette butt in it ? Inconsolable sense of regret. There also always seems to be an Australian sleeping on the sofa.Anyway I'm going to see what they have on offer in the Plough sometime over the weekend. I shall report back. A splash of water maybe, or maybe an ice cube or two..but coke!!!! Unless of course your talking about the powdered variety. Ted Max
Yup.I find the worst thing about hangovers these days is that I get really depressed on them as well as all the other symptoms. Spend all day contemplating the hopelesness of everything. On such mornings the thought that the itinerant Aussie littering the sofa had put coke in my malt (and then not actually drunk the stuff anyway) might actually tempt me into the library with grandpa's old service revolver. Brendan
?twas not me! But is one of the heinous sins that I have seen committed in these situations. I thought it was quite a good image to show what a waste it can be cracking out the good stuff when everyone is, well stuffed. Ant
I made a point of checking out the selection at the Plough during the forum drink-up. Unfortunately I'd already drunk-up, so I can't remember what they had. They definitely had something, though... Marmora Man
Just for clarity I was referring to Scotch Malt Whisky - just failed to define my tastes / assumptions clearly enough. What we really need is a discerning landlord prepared to host a whisky tasting or two or three - or even a competitive Whisky / Whiskey tasting perhaps. Water, a few oatmeal biscuits, some cheese to help it all along and a designated driver or two to get us all home. Where is the George Canning man when you need him? jurasource
ahhh whisky... Lagavulin 16yr has always been my favorite, though a splash of Laphrioag always goes down well.most certainly up for a tasting session though - think Liquorish and The Palmerston have reasonable selections...anyone tried any Japanese single malts? tried one a while ago (can't remember the name) and was pleasantly surprised, though it didn't come close to any of the Islay ones.Jura Superstition is nice for those who like a bit of peat (silly name mind) Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/1291-malt-whiskies/page/2/#findComment-35316 Share on other sites

Brendan
The Plough has Talisker, Macallan, Laphroaig, Glenfiddich and a few others but my memory fails me.The Palmeston has Macallan, Oban, Ardbeg, Glenfiddich, Glenmorangie and also a few more that I can?t remember. Mrs B is also adamant that they do the best hot chocolate in ED. Marmora Man
jurasource Wrote:-------------------------------------------------------> Found the japanese bottle (and finished it!):> Yamazaki 10yr, very drinkable if slightly lacking> depth...I was told that when the Japanese decided to get into distilling their own whisky they bought an old still from a highland distillery, analysed the metal content to replicate it exactly, modelled it in three dimensions to recreate the exact shape - even down to the dents, scratches rivets and seams - then analysed the water, the malting process & sugar content, impirted the peat and used the exact temperatures as used in Scotland to malt the barley and brew the mash. The first tasting proved that the outcome was complete shite. After that they developed their own processes and now do create a very drinkable something that is Japanese Whisky - which I have drunk in curiosity and then with pleasure. Asset
I remember those tales of the Japanese trying to replicate Scotch. It's all down to the water though and that they could not replicate. jurasource
I did hear about them importing peat - but the modelling of the still is really quite impressive (and mental)...Guess it's all about the water indeed Asset Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/1291-malt-whiskies/page/2/#findComment-35572 Share on other sites
Annasfield
There's a Whisk(e)y bar called Albannach in Trafalgar Square - I worked there for a while when I first moved back to London. Their list is quite extensive and some of the prices were quite simply shocking. Learnt a bit about whisky though!Whisky list - ooh just learnt how to use the link thingy ::o Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/1291-malt-whiskies/page/2/#findComment-35598 Share on other sites

Brendan
I noticed in Sainsbury?s on Sunday that they have an own brand single malt scotch. It is 15 years old, claret cask aged and says it comes from a Speyside distillery but does not mention which one. It could be one of many! Unless of course they are referring to Speyside in Tobago. Anyway has anyone tried it? Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/1291-malt-whiskies/page/2/#findComment-35611 Share on other sites
