i don't think they can be recycled because of the glue in the spine

there's an organisation called www.bookcrossing.com - basically you tag your books with a unique ID then leave them somewhere like a cafe or park bench, when someone picks them up they can log on to tinternet and you can see how far round the world your book has gone!!

alternatively you could donate to an old folks home, or hospital

thanks for info, peeps - Ant, I ran up to Sainsbos prior to posting and their recycling centre doesn't have a place for books - neither does the one at Belair Park. Tillie, I've got three boxes of them - but they aint novels, they're mainly textbooks and popular science/psychology stuff (so not sure how appreciated they would be in an old folks home). I agree that books shouldn't go to the graveyard. If you want a rummage (so to speak) PM me.

Mmmm, don't think that's actually how greenmetropolis works actually. It's a selling site - you list your books on their site; they sell them; you get money, they get money - and 5p goes to the Woodland Trust. If going down this route, you will usually get a better price for your books on Amazon where they are more likely to sell and you can make your own charitable donation.

    • It’s a flat fee levy payable by guests staying in hotel and hostel rooms, so added to the bill.  This already happens in Manchester and Liverpool ( I think in Liverpool it’s a percentage, so the more expensive rooms pay more). I read somewhere that Edinburgh is doing this next year? Charges of this kind are becoming common around the world. I think it absolutely makes sense for Southwark and other boroughs are bound to follow.
