OK and for what it's worth it would most definitely be a contestable case (yours) had they refused. I'm still very uncomfortable with this Pratt case though and I know you say it's just that he refused to pay the fine but I kinda like that he stood his ground, it can't have been easy being pursued through all the courts in the land over the past 2 years. And it wasn't just a holiday that could have been taken at any time, there were 17 other family members going, all trying to co-ordinate their life schedules, some of them may have only been able to afford to go on the dates that they went. It would be awful to think that the guy and his kids would have had to miss out on such an enriching family experience because a head teacher decided that 7 days off school for a 6 year old was against the rules. Some rules are just meant to be broken!

By my understanding Headteachers can now only grant authorised absences for exceptional circumstances which include close family bereavement and religious holidays. Is that right? AND Otta I was talking about you taking your child out of school for 4 days (authorised I'm aware). Had the school denied your request what would you have done?

The kid was 6....just 6! Bloke in question along with 17 family members went on holiday and she missed 7 days of schooling. Really! This is all ludicrous in my opinion and it's taken away the discretion of the Head. Otta, out of interest, what would you have done if your school had said NO to your request? Would you have just accepted their decision?

So, are the usual suspects going tomorrow?

Seems we all laughed a lot more back in the day. I wonder if it was because of the monthly piss ups? Maybe they should be brought back.

Sorry to go all Louisa/Foxy on yo ass but that squatter thread has made me miss the good ole days. I even yearned for Hugenuts to be back among us albeit for a fleeting moment ;-) And some of the posters that are no longer with us, Moos, Crystalclear, Shambles, Bagpuss...all so sad ;-(

What a lovely time I've had revisiting the old EDF. It says I first posted in March 2007 but I'm sure I was active in 2006. I am also going to resurrect the "What is East Dulwich reading" on the strength of my nostalgic trip as I'm hungry for some reading recommendations.

As DaveR said, Cyclist should certainly consider the kid wearing a helmet no two ways about it but it's ultimately his choice. Let's hope he'll never have to regret his decision. By the way Cyclist, I know some have come on too dictatorial but it's nice that people actually care about the safety of kids in their community don't you think? :-)

In the interest of balance and god I really feel for Tony. Something similar happened to me six years ago! I lost my business and my marriage fell apart and I ended up bankrupt and on the dole for a 2 year period (single mother with 3 kids). The inland revenue wouldn't let me sell my house and because I was a home owner I was given a tiny proportion of housing help compared to that of friends who were career doleists given to rent their lovely homes. The upshot was I lost my house, had to sell for silly money and moved out of our area to rent a crsphole flat, had a severely depressed child and had to borrow a huge amount from family to drag myself out of the situation. That was under a labour government. I have only just started revisiting that horrendous period of my life! This is not meant in any way to take away from Tony's dire situation.

I wasn't talking about me per se,just giving you an example of someone who, had I been around to vote, wouldn't have voted labour.

Anyway, I've gone and done exactly what I tried not to do! For interests sake I declare that I didn't vote for the first time ever as I'm a long time out of the country!
