Sunday roast with decent roast potatoes locally?

Recommended Posts

I had an absolutely delicious Sunday roast yesterday.

Good portion of tender beef cooked medium rare as ordered, nice gravy, properly cooked veg, etc, EXCEPT the "roast" potatoes were rubbish - scarcely past the parboiled stage and almost completely white, with no crispy bits at all.

The last time I had a roast out (at a different place) , the same thing happened, but in that case I sort of expected it - in this case I didn't (and certainly not for nearly sixteen quid :( )

As the meal was mostly very good, including a very delicious pudding, I don't want to name the place.

Can anybody recommend anywhere locally where the Sunday roast has consistently good roast potatoes? And preferably where you don't have to book, as usually it's a spur of the moment thing?

And yes I did mention it to the waitress, but I've no idea whether it was fed back to the chef (who must surely have known???) I wonder whether it was because it was relatively early (around 1pm) and if we'd been later the potatoes would have been in the oven longer??

I don't necessarily want "good", (ETA: Though I see I did say "good" above!) I just want something that is browned (and by being in an oven, not by being brushed with some weird colouring) and crispy, or even just crispy in parts.

Even something that has been deep fried to turn it crispy would be preferable (to me, anyway) to a pale white thing which is scarcely more than boiled :(

Thanks for the suggestions, people.

Sue, the only thing to do is to go back there and tweak the teats of the sixteen quid blighters, despite your generous and forgiving mien (is mien the word I want?).

Order your Sunday scran, but insist that your 'roast' potatos are sliced and deep-fried!!

SHAAAAMMME!!!

Yes, chips.

Good chips will always trump bad roast poppies - FACT!

So although you don't get the BEST roast lunch, you get a better one than you would've had.

And of course the establishment is given pause, a chance to reflect on their woeful spud performance, fall brokenly on each others' shoulders and resolve, nay SWEAR to do better by you in the future.

Seriously I reckon it's what Escoffier woulda done.

I think part of the problem is the fact that roasts are so popular in the various establishments around here on a Sunday and the cooking of the potatoes to get them nice and crisp takes so long that they can't keep up with the orders so the spuds go out as they are at the time that everything else that goes on the plate is ready.

I had an absolutely cracking on in the Goldsmith Arms in Penge last Sunday, great roasties and an extra jug of gravy. It annoys me more than anything to have a dry roast. Plus this was at 4pm when you'd expect food to be dwindling.

You know what's coming now don't you? Hundreds of recommendations of all the usual places that we all know about. There's probably at least half a dozen other "where to go for a decent roast round here" threads on this forum where people have to varying degress recommended or dissed all the usual places and I'm sure you already know that so I'll just tick a few off for you shall I.

The Crooked Well

Camberwell Arms

The Lordship

The Great Exhibition

The Palmerston

EDT

Franklins

The Plough

The White Horse

The Rye

Watson's General Telegraph

The Herne

House Of Tippler

The Cherry Tree

blah blah blah

Please excuse if I've missed any out.

The only place I ever eaten Sunday Roast is The Victoria Inn Peckham.

I won a Sunday Lunch there on Twitter. Been a few times But not for a couple of years now.

Was always nice. I had the Brisket.

Best Roasties are the ones I cook myself. King Edward spuds par boiled and left to steam off on a rack before

roasting in Beef dripping. Do NOT shake.

Jah, it's specifically the roast potatoes I started the thread about.

And one of the places on your list is the place I had the crap ones!

ETA: Chefs change, so I'm interested in how things are at the moment. At some of those places I've had excellent roasts in the past and let's say less excellent ones recently, quite apart from the roast spuds ......

Oh dear me, Sue. It had to be one of those on the list, that was obvious. Can't you see how predictable and pointless it'll all be? Same old recommendations and dissings repeated ad infinitum. Yawn. I'm bailing out. You have been warned.

Well, you never had to read the thread or post on it in the first place :))

Got out of bed the wrong side this morning, did you? :))
