I was up there a few days ago.. There was so much crap not in containers just dumped on the ground.

I am not surprised the facility has been removed. It was being abused.

Labour Southwark have decided to remove all recycling facilities from supermarkets across Southwark.

The argument is everyone has recycling collections for the majority of what was being collected at these recycling centres from their Southwark homes. Also the contamination of the recycling meant it was seriously degraded.

But it does feel very counter intuitive to remove recycling facilities and residents have fewer options of how to dispose of recycling when they have an excess from events such as birthdays, moving, xmas, etc.

Ah well - that just means that normal recycling can be fly tipped as well, to fill up the spaces around the large items now being fly-tipped. Southwark Labour seems intent on creating the street-scape of the Winter of Discontent, without even a dustmen's strike to help that along. Old labour indeed. Will warm the cockles of Jeremy's heart.

Thanks for this info James. Do you know where Southwark residents recycle textiles now that there are no longer facilities at supermarkets? I know that small electricals can be taken to any electrical stores e.g. Currys.

I always used those bins for recycling textiles or if we had no more room in our blue bin. Yes, we have good recycling collections in Southwark but clearly there was a need for those large collection points in the supermarket otherwise they wouldn't have got full so quickly!

Are we supposed to drive to the dump now?

I agree that all those items which could previously be properly recycled at the supermarket will now end up in landfill or fly tipped and then landfill!

Crazy decision.

I'm not surprised that Southwark have made such a stupid decision. My recent experience of majority group Councillors online and at meetings have left me with the impression that they just do what they want to do and anyone who doesn't like it can go forth and multiply.

+1 for this please. That's what I used to use the Sainsburys' facilities for.

All part of Labour Southwark's plan to make Recycling as difficult as possible so more people will fly tip

and then get Fined... as cameras are set up at known fly tipping sites.

Same as they make parking in the area more difficult so more people take a chance and stop for 5-10 mins

and then get Fined after being caught by camera cars.

Same as they close down Public Toilets and then people who take a break in the street get Fined.

Back in 2011 The Mail claimed they made a profit of about 50,000 for councils

But that is the Mail :)

Ditto recycling textiles and electricals. Also my blue bin often overflows I only have a box. My house opens directly onto the street (no front garden) so I don't have the large blue wheelie bin as it would obstruct the pavement. Therefore I often used those large communal bins for the overflow. Also I don't have a car, so getting from ED to OKR would be a major hike.

    • Thank you for the feedback! Helps to see we're not alone. The only good experience we had was Modern House. Anyone tried Strike/Purple Bricks/Yopa? How did it go? Anything to be mindful of?
    • Best experience we had was with Modern House. The rest of the agents around the area are appalling.... They just want their commission and not interested in getting a good deal. You'd be lucky if they pick up the phone...
    • I’d like to echo the positive comments about Trelco. I discovered that the stopcock on the rising main was leaking and was damaging the flooring in the utility room. Not having seen this thread, or any reviews for that matter,  I picked Trelco  as it was the nearest to me. It was a gamble but goodness it paid off. James was responsive and clear in what he offered. His colleague Andy replaced the offending stopcock and put in a lever valve to allow me to shut off the water easily when I go away. He did a great job, neat and tidy, he was cheerful, friendly and professional. All this within a day of contacting them. Although not an emergency it needed resolution quickly. The price charged was very reasonable indeed, especially considering the quality of the service. I am so pleased to have found such an excellent plumber.
