Street name origins in the area

Morning all

Having read that Marmora, Therapia, Mundania and Scutari Roads get their names from locations during the Crimean war does anyone else know the history of their road / street name ?

Marmora Road relates to the Sea of Marmora, between the Mediterranean and the Black Sea. Scutari was, of course, the site of Florence Nightingale hospital for Crimean wounded. I have tried to locate both Therapia and Mundania in the area but with no joy.

Of passing interest to military historians - the Marmora Sea was the place where the first Royal Navy submarine VC was won.

I'm pretty good with local history and know alot of the origins of ED road names but have never found out ours?

Anyone know the origin of Ivanhoe?

If it's a Victorian road then may be Sir Walter Scott's novel of the same name? Very popular in mid Victorian period.

I heard that Glengarry, Trossachs, Tarbert & Thornecombe were all built on by a builder originally from Scotland unexciting, but there you go . . .

What about Hansler? I've heard it's just another version of Henslowe, but I'm not convinced.

There's an entire book about ED Road Name origins I think... I got it out of the library when I was wee.

All I can remember is Upland Road is named after a field, and Lordship Lane and Frien Road are both named after manors and farms in the area at the time, and they were arch rivals or something.

I was about seven when I read it to be honest!

Friern Road, Friern Manor - so called, because of the Friesian cows that were reared and grazed on the land.

Barry Road (presumably) named after Charles Barry, architect of Dulwich College (and I think son of Sir Charles Barry architect of Houses of Parliament). Ashbourne and Chesterfield Grove(s) named by builder, who was from Derbyshire.

I got this old map of Peckham and Dulwich somewhere on the interweb and Friern Farm was basically where my house is on Barry Road, I think... Pretty cool.

what about Crebor Street? It is the only street in Ed still to have an annual street party.....

Donkey Alley is named after the donkeys of the gypsies who once lived there. Apparently.

Fireman Alley is so called because of the fire station that was there before it got bombed during the war.

Mount Adon Park is so called because there was a farm called Mount Adon Park I think... More and more road name origins are coming back to me...!

You could probaly guess that every road is named after a farm or a building that was there... Not very imaginative!

I can't add a lot to the origins of street names - but I can tell MadWorld74 that Upland Road are having a street party on Sunday.
