When I passed the car was taped off - it was partially blocking Barry Road traffic tavelling West (bendy buses will have a problem passing) and making it very difficult to turn west out of Underhill (from either direction). It's front was pretty badly damaged; I suspect it won't be easy to move (isn't towable as far as I could see) so it will need to be winched onto a low loader to be recovered. No obvious sign, thank goodness, of anyone injured - the passenger 'box' looked OK.
Nice black new loooking bmw, looked like it came out of underhill rd onto Barry rd and crashed into the railings. Not just a dent so it must have been going at speed. i couldn't see any other vehicle involved. Police, ambulance and fire brigade present, as i passed by trying to get shelter from the heavy rain.:-S
Just another incident which proves people drive WAY too fast down Barry Road and traffic calming is necessary. A roundabout would slow things down and a reliably flashing speed camera. I've seen w****ers travelling over 60 mph regularly.

This is true. If you hit a railing head on at 25 mph the car will be very damaged. It's inaccurate to make assumptions on speed from crash damage.


Also the car could have mounted the pavement for any number of reasons, from avoiding an obstacle to heart attack.

Anyone who lives close to Barry road with any wits know that people hare down that road at speeds unseen on any other road. You don't need a fucking speed gun to say "yep THAT one was 60 mph"

Unfortunately Barry Road is not an accident black spot in either the area or borough. The junction of Peckham Rye and East Dulwich Road however is, which is why it and several other junctions will be considered in a range of planned road improvements around the Peckham Rye area over the next two-three years. The junction of Barry Road and Peckham Rye may be considered for work to make turning right off Barry Road safer and easier.

First Point - Excessive Speed on Barry Road: I have to agree with cazzyr - people drive exceptionally fast up and down Barry Road. Just give them an clear road opportunity and away they go... Sometimes they dont even need a clear road - travelling in excess speed on the wrong side of the road, overtaking the number 12 bus and a few cars is not uncommon at all.


Second Point - Barry Road, Underhill Road Junction: There was also a crash at this junction on Sunday, which was the first one I had seen in a while - but I have been on holiday... luckily a local Bobbie was in the vacinity, as it looked like things were going to get heated between the drivers of the two cars.


Tonights crash has written off the railings by the crossings that is for sure!


How do I know? My house overlooks this junction.

A few weeks ago we were talking about this junction on this forum.It needs painted stop lines and sign urgently. As I said on a previous post some idiots ues it as a race track and 60mph plus is no exaggeration. At least two speed cameras would help but with all the government cut backs can't see it happening.

This all results to bad driving speeding and wet conditions. The black beamer must have hit the railings at some speed judging by the demage. Was there any other vehicles involved and was anyone injured?

I rather regret starting this post ,I'd just seen the accident and in rather a knee jerk reaction wanted to " share " .

Because I use Barry Rd a great deal posts about it attract my attention .

But I wonder what the statistics actually show .

This has probably been posted somewhere else on here - maybe JB's thread - but can anyone post a link to to one of those maps that shows numbers of accidents in the borough ?

the fact is that drivers in this country, and particularly i london, drive way too fast as a matter of course. some cars treat residential side roads like race tracks. they even whizz along lordship lane, which is loony. it is the british mentality I'm afraid

A couple of posts down is information I found - 5 collissions in 3 years.

Extra double yellow lines were installed to improve sight lines, but the collission stats show more crashes on Lordship Lane and Grove Vale and that's where major spending was agreed at the start of the financial year. Some this and most next year. Labour have shifted much of the emphasis to Grove Vale and a colleague cycnically suggested this is because it borders South Camberwell ward which is Labour held.

Aaah - knew I'd seen a map somewhere ,page 13 on this Southwark Road Safety Plan .

The image isn't clear enough on line for me to make much sense of it ,but maybe someone more skilled will have better luck .

Longer double-yellows to improve sight lines is a great idea, and one that could benefit LL and especially the bend by Kwik Fit on Grove Vale, where poor parking forces cars and buses onto the wrong side of the road and unnecessary congestion.

Hi James Barber - are you saying that the report says that there has only been 5 collisons at the Barry Road - Underhill road in the past 3 years?


If this is the case, then this is very wrong. I would say there has been at least 5 collisons there this year alone - probably more.


I hear and see them all the time from my house. Earlier this year the crashes there were coming thick and fast - approximately one a week for the space of about a month...

If people don't report collissions then I'm afraid they wont appear in any statistics.

Under reporting is higher the less injured people involved are.

If you see a collission do report it. Without the right stats very hard for resources to be prioritised on the right location.

    • It's certainly a risky strategy, as well as ticking everyone off, the gazunderer risks losing the property and also their costs incurred during the process e.g. legal & survey. It's hard to mitigate against but I always think that if you're desperate to sell, don't ever convey that  to your estate agent, as that info more than likely gets passed on to potential buyers. You should be doing that regardless of whether gazundering is happening or not, as it will affect the offers you receive... That's correct. Some agents have policies in place to 'discourage' gazundering and gazumping, but ultimately it comes down to the morals of the buyer...
    • The owner may not be on this forum. Maybe you should let the police know you have it, in case the owner has reported it as stolen? Also, are you sure the owner hadn't just left it there temporarily while going into their house, or putting their bike away or getting it out? What street was it in?
    • For these places to be good they have to be mega efficient: high volume high speed like the one in Camberwell next to Stormbird.  If you can't hit that sort of tipping point you end up having to cut corners and you enter a sort of death spiral.  The one at the south end of Lordship Lane near Joseph's is fairly hopeless.
