Hi everyone-start of the international rugby season on Saturday. I know from past threads there are plenty of rugby fans out there.

Best pub to watch above match? -especially where they'll be NZers and home support (we're a divided partnership!) for some atmosphere and banter-or should I venture to Clapham or Wimbledon,,,

Thanks

Sam

Sorry to be a pain but we used to have a great rugby pub in the Magdela, now a non sport pub.

Maybe Scott at the Actres (who was very anti sports but whose principles are slipping in our favour) can help. As the matches are in the afternoon it could be a real winner on the trade front.

Autumn internationals are great fun and I'm sure there is only one winner of that game !

Best rugby pub imo is Hoopers on Ivanhoe Road. The landlord, Jamie, is a massive rugby fan and has two screens showing the action.

He also has an excellent range of beers.

The only let down is a lack of food. Last time I went the only offerings were some ropey pies and sausage rolls.

I endorse Hoopers as the best local in which to watch the rugby. Top beer and a middle aged crowd of rugby know-it-alls and bores just like me!. Beer top notch.

Although we're in agreement elsewhere on this Forum David, I must disagree about the pies. In fact there are some that say they are an effective cure for sundry ailments, constipation and ague in particular

    • My mum (91 years young!) well remembers going to Austin's as a child, which she described as an 'Aladdin's Cave'!  She absolutely loved it - and is still a shopping fiend to this day (I 'blame' Austin's 😉). Going back up Peckham Rye, passing Austin's on your right hand-side, just past Phillips Walk (so not far from Austin's at all), I believe there was a British Relay Wireless shop - this would have been in the late 1930s/early 1940s.  Does anyone know anything about this? My grandad (my mum's dad) used to manage it; it was severely damaged in The Blitz - but I am having trouble locating it.  Mum's memory is dim (she was 6 at the time); she originally thought it was in Rye Lane, but we think now it was in Peckham Rye just up from Phillips Walk (originally Phillips Road).
    • Thanks everyone, this will need to be reported again as the fox was still mobile and walking down the road when last seen... hopefully someone will spot and report.
