Reminds me of an old joke...

A man was invited to dinner with the French ambassador. Making small talk he asked the ambassador's wife, "What do you think the most important thing is in life". To his obvious surprise she answered, "A penis". "Are you sure?", he asked. "Definitely", she said confidently, "A penis".

At this point the ambassador leant over the table and said, "My dear, it eez pronounced 'appiness"...

Happiness - comes in many forms.

One, impossible, dream for me would be to discover a new, unread, novel in Patrick O Brian magnificent Aubrey / Maturin series and, having absolutely nothing else to do - settle down to read it on a dark winter's night, in a comfortable armchair, beside a log fire with a glass of good malt whisky in my hand - current choice Caol Ila.

... and Bunnahabhain, where my grandmother grew up before the First World War. Her father was the bonded warehouseman employed by 'the Revenue', but who ensured an occasional bottle made it into the pub to keep the locals happy ;-)

As whisky happiness is hi jacking this thread I also offer you 25 year old Highland Park, Talisker and agree with Louisiana on Lagavulin, Ardbeg, Laphroaig.

In fact another version of happiness could be to be locked in the Malt Whisky Society club room in Bleeding Heart Yard, London with an anti hangover pill and carry out a comparative tasting of all 350 malts on offer

    • Don't see an issue at all. Siunds like the protest is being made by friends and families of the two off licences, Morleys, pret and maxim chicken who are within 100 m of the school. Much ado about nothing. Besides if it doesn't proceed, the kids will walk a but further!!
    • Whilst I agree to some extent,  are they going to have some kind of checkpoint?  I can't see how this could work in practice. Surely Southwark residents go to these places quite frequently as well, particularly Tate Modern?  Will we have to take proof of residency every time we go out? What happens when family are with us who don't live in Southwark? Will other London boroughs start doing the same thing? Will Southwark residents be charged a tourist tax to visit "tourist attractions" in other areas, eg the V&A and the British Museum?
    • A shout out for Mark, owner of Pure Plumbers. 07970 971510 They're well established in the Sevenoaks area, but have recently started doing more work in SE London.  Did some v quick and efficient bathroom and boiler fixes for me; have also seen some of the bathrooms he's built, which have a nice attention to detail. • Totally agree regarding not supporting chains. Gail’s was fine but last time I went in Feb this year, actually walked out Fayetteville looking at menu and waiting 15 minutes to even get glass of water and not busy at all. Staff gone down hill - sooner it goes the better… Always prefer to support non chains - so many lovely places with good food to choose from with pleasant staff who know about customer service and sadly, non English which says a lot for our culture, pubs are also becoming abit of a hit and miss affair but maybe just unlucky. At the end of the day all about the chef. Still abit unclear where new place is located - is it down the road from Goose Green where parade of shops are before Peckham Rye?
