Swadesh - closed for good?

Does anyone know what's happening to Swadesh? I really hope they're not closed for good, it's our favourite Indian in ED! :(

Several years back 4-5 years they opted to not selling alcohol..

I occassionally get a T/A. the food is good.

They catogorically refuse to have alcohol on the premises so no BYOB.

I have Known the manager for many years and he always remembers my name..

I have spoken to him on the subject.

I am sorry if it HAS closed. but do not know how it lasted so long..

They were always quite empty even before they banned alcohol. They aren't in a great location compared to the other similar restaurants further down Lordship Lane, I think.

I thought their food was quite good but I haven't been there since the alcohol ban and I'm sorry but not surprised if they have closed.

But good for them for sticking to their principles.

Not sure I share the "good for them" sentiment. Unfortunately the end result was completely predictable... if they were so averse to alcohol, they were in the wrong business!

Taking a wild stab in the dark here: the Islamic lack of enthusiasm for intoxicants? I'd be surprised if they were Wee Frees or ascetics but I could of course be wrong.

I had a colleague who wouldn't even allow alcohol in his car

He was a convert and therefore stricter than most.

Yes, they're muslims. I had a good chat with the owner about it once. He said he decided it would be hypocritical to continue selling alcohol.

As I understand the situation.. The Quoran does not talk about alcohol... May be wrong.

Islamic teachings say that when going to Prayer one must be of clear mind not affected by alcohol or drugs.

Selling Alcohol to other Muslims whould therfore be wrong. ?

Selling Alcohol to non Muslims would be a different issue and is a matter of interperation of Islamic Teachings...

Perhaps our politicians should consider the aspect of 'clear mind not affected by alcohol or drugs..' :)

Much as I respect people and their faith, they must have known it'd kill them off.

And it did. Mind you, there's probably only SO much you can take in that business, Specially if you're not a drinker, having to see pissed people, week in week out, in your restaurant. It's boring enough being around half cut people in a pub, but in your face, every Friday & Saturday, nah!

We ordered delivery many many times, it was one of our favourites. However, about 6-7 months ago we had two awful deliveries (inedible starter, dal like water) and after our friendly feedback was ignored we gave up on them temporarily.

We were going to try them again yesterday and only didn't because I think they are normally closed on Tuesdays. Would be a shame if this is for good.

The Coriander was good. That was always my LL Indian of choice until it closed. Surma is just as good though.

Swades discover curry alone is not enough.

Who actually owns the freehold on the building? It would appear to me, that with the closing of the launderette next door and the Irish shop, along with the old closed down shop - something is afoot here for a larger business to move in to that whole stretch next to William Rose?

I'm all for curry sans beer, but that model doesn't work outside central london unless in specific areas like East Ham, Southall, Harrow, Wembley, Basildon etc. where there are the appropriate non-drinking populations to sustain such a restaurant.

Pretty naive and wasteful of money / effort to try otherwise. The public don't cater to your principles.

I'd like to see a canteen style place, stripped of all that tablecloth/restaurant formality thing, somewhere fresher and with more of a buzz. A place where you could drink fresh juice, tea, beer even. Something beyond Kingfisher.

I think I'm just tired of the old/standard/rut that's become the 'curry house' way.

I love the food, but the rest is tired beyond belief.

Everest Curry King on Loampit, Lewisham, ditches the tablecloth thang - but it ain't trendy. However, if you want decent Sri Lankan Tamil food, it's the bollox. Also there's a couple of Tamil shops ac ouple of doors down, so you can stock up /marvel at the stock ! (I've been called pretentious for suggesting this place before !).
