You don't have to like the pogues

You don't have to like the song

But you cant help but know the words, surely be to jaysus. There are two year old children and 90 year old grandparents who know the words

And even if you don't, the chances are, on a thread about the pogues, an arbitrary sequence of words containing faggot is likely to not be a random offensive use of the word. So getting all offended is just.... Gaaahhh

(tu). I couldn't agree with you more SM

Their version of Gentleman Soldier still makes me

It's of a gentleman soldier as a sentry he did stand

He saluted a fair maiden, by a waiving of his hand

So then he boldly kissed her and he passed it off as a joke

He drilled her up in the sentry boxwrapped up in a soldier's cloke

It's not so much the words which make me laugh - he doesn't change the traditional words used in other versions much, if at all - it's the way he does the two voices, especially the woman's - "Oh come my gentleman soldier, and won't you marry me", for example, in a high pitched squeal.

Thanks and praises

Thanks to Jesus

I bet on the Bottle of Smoke

I went to Hell

And to the races

To bet on the Bottle of Smoke

The day being clear

The sky being bright

He came up on the left

Like a streak of light

Like a drunken f**k

On a Saturday night

Up came the Bottle of Smoke

Twenty f*****g five to one

My gambling days are done

I bet on a horse called the Bottle of Smoke

And my horse won

Stewards inquiries

Swift and fiery

I had the Bottle of Smoke

Inquisitions and suppositions

I had the Bottle of Smoke

F**k the stewards

A trip to Lourdes

Might give the old f*****s

The power of sight

Screaming springers and stoppers

And call out coppers

But the money still gleams in my hand like a light

Bookies cursing

Cars reversing

I had the Bottle of Smoke

Glasses steaming

Vessels bursting

I had the Bottle of Smoke

Slip a fifty to the wife

And for each brat a crisp new five

To give me a break on a Saturday night

When I had the Bottle of Smoke

Priests and maidens

Drunk as pagans

They had the Bottle of Smoke

Sins forgiven and celebrations

They had the Bottle of Smoke

F**k the Yanks

And drink their wives

The moon is clear

The sky is bright

I'm happy as the horses shite

Up came the Bottle of Smoke

:)-D

Thank you for that FJD - The Bottle of Smoke has raised a smile or two on this otherwise grim day. In the same vein, I give you the Body of an American.

The cadillac stood by the house

And the yanks they were within

And the tinker boys they hissed advice

'Hot-wire her with a pin'

We turned and shook as we had a look

In the room where the dead men lay

So big Jim Dwyer made his last trip

To the home where his father's laid

Fifteen minutes later

We had our first taste of whiskey

There was uncles giving lectures

On ancient Irish history

The men all started telling jokes

And the women they got frisky

At five o'clock in the evening

Every bastard there was piskey

Fare thee well going away

There's nothing left to say

Farewell to New York City boys

To Boston and PA

He took them out

With a well-aimed clout

He was often heard to say

I'm a free born man of the USA

He fought the champ in Pittsburgh

And he slashed him to the ground

He took on Tiny Tartanella

And it only went one round

He never had no time for reds

For drink or dice or whores

And he never threw a fight

Unless the fight was right

So they sent him to the war

Fare the well gone away

There's nothing left to say

With a slainte Joe and Erin go

My love's in Amerikay

The calling of the rosary

Spanish winde from far away

I'm a free born man of the USA

This morning on the harbour

When I said goodbye to you

I remember how I swore

That I'd come back to you one day

And as the sunset came to meet

The evening on the hill

I told you I'd always love

I always did and I always will

Fare thee well gone away

There's nothing left to say

'cept to say adieu

To your eyes as blue

As the water in the bay

And to big Jim Dwyer

The man of wire

Who was often heard to say

I'm a free born man of the USA

According to the wikipedia entry Fairytale of New York Mitch Benn commented that "faggot" was Irish and Liverpudlian slang for a lazy person, and was unrelated to the derogatory term for homosexuals.

So is this derogatory term, also used in that context in Liverpool and Ireland to mean lazy person?

Could never understand the slang term "faggot" which is used In America to insult Homosexual men?

But In Uk Is a tasty word for a Meat dish!...MMMMMMMMMMM faggots for dinner yum!

That's the point Tarot, homosexuals were used to start burning at the stake extravaganzas - before the main attraction, eg, a witch or a cardinal.

I've never been a fan of the Pogues since arsehole sang with Van Morrison and changed the lyrics of G.L.O.R.I.A

    • What outcome would you like? Disciplinary action? Not to have the driver back? Retraining? I know there is alot of pressure on drivers to deliver within a set day. if he slams the gate, is it evidence he is causing damage, or is the noise a irritant to yourself? You could put a sign up or buy a signing asking to close the gate gentle???? can you hear the door bell from the door? he might be ringing, not hearing and therefore knocking. In trhe notes section of the be livery page, there is a note section, although there is not 100 per cent these notes would be read as these drivers are constantly rushing.  I did a google search for you, i found this and you can try the envri website Contact Us | Evri   To complain to Evri, you can follow these steps: Contact Customer Service: Call Evri's customer service at 0330 808 5456 for assistance with your complaint.    1 Write a Letter: Address your complaint to Capitol House, 1 Capitol Close, Morley, Leeds, West Yorkshire, LS27 0WH.    1 Use the Official Website: Visit the Evri complaints page on their official website for detailed instructions on how to submit a complaint.    2 Email or Call for Specific Issues: For issues like missing or damaged parcels, you can email or call 0800 988 8888, which is free to call.    1 These methods will help you effectively communicate your concerns to Evri.   My driver is called anthony, he is brilliant to be honest. I cant fault him.
    • When I have more time and energy, I will look up the actual number of votes cast for each party in that election, rather than the number of seats won. I'm interested to see that you apparently  think that  Boris Johnson did a good job of "leading the country through Covid." Is your memory really that short? I won't stoop to calling Johnson and his cronies names in the way that you seem to think is appropriate for left wing politicians. At least the left wing politicians have some semblance of morals and a concern for people who aren't in some over privileged inner circle and/or raking in money for themselves on the back of an epidemic. I'm not going to open a can of worms on here  by commenting on the disgraceful so called "purge".
    • Can’t imagine what it must be like you have your doorbell rung harshly.
    • Hi all, Wondering if anyone else in/around SE22 is also having the unfortunate luck of having Evri parcels delivered by a very rude individual? Whenever we have parcels delivered, our front gate is being slammed open and closed, ring doorbell is harshly banged (not pressed) followed by simultaneously banging on the door knocker and slamming the letter box multiple times. Someone is normally home by the time they come in the evening and never has to wait long for an answer. If we’re not home, we speak to them on the doorbell so we do find the actions of this individual unreasonable and rude.  We have tried a couple of times politely asking that they not do this but they are very dismissive and gives a passive-aggressive “have a nice day” reply.  Has anyone been able to contact Evri and successfully had any issues similar to this resolved? We have enough evidence through our doorbell footage but we are lost with what else we can do. We’ve tried asking politely but don’t want our gate or door damaged by someone who simply doesn’t care and lacks basic manners.    If anyone else is having this issue or has any advice on how we can report this, it would be much appreciated. After another dismissive reply to my concern this afternoon, I will be calling Evri tomorrow to raise a complaint. I have lost my patience with them
