Hiya, so we are set for another few inches of snow over the next few days if the weather forecast is to be believed....I'm a bit apprehensive about the journey back to Gloucestershire on Boxing day. I know it's hardly flying off to Oz, but its still a 2.5 hr trip in the car with 2 kids (2yrs & 8 months) in fairly bad conditions. Does anyone know if the motorways are actually ok atm? It's hard to know the *real* state of things, having only stepped outside my front door to the shops with the kids a few times in the last 10 days or so!! Also I don't drive regularly, we are hiring a car for the trip back, so this adds a level of anxiety if I prang it! I've got until the day before to cancel the trip to get the money back on the car, but I need to pack and get sorted by Friday (not doing it on Christmas day!). Anyone canceling their get away or just going for it? Obviously I know this TOTALLY all depends on the next few days.........just don't like being unsure of our plans!

Hello

We were meant to be hiring a car and going away to Berkshire and Oxfordshire tomorrow. But me and the kids have been struck down by the flu which means we can't go yet but I'm seriously tempted to just cancel and stay at home. My parents in Oxfordshire are currently snowed into their village, my father in law is recovering from a serious operation and really doesn't need us taking flu to his house, and all in all I'm just too ill and tired to even think about packing up the car!

I share your pain. I have been avidly checking Traffic England (which has live travel info, and some live camera feeds) and the TfL roads website (which has both live camera signals and message signs) to see if we can get ourselves to Devon on Christmas Eve. I suspect we'll try and make a dash for it, but am starting to load up the freezer just in case not!
I am also slightly concerned that all the hire cars might not be in the right places. Its not unusual for the car rental places to not have enough cars on normal weekends, let alone snowy christmas ones. Three times we've had to end up borrowing the managers car because they've run out even though we have a confirmed booking!

The forecast keeps changing, last I saw met were reporting barely any more snow, more sleet until after Christmas, in and around London anyway.

Clux, my family are all snowed in, in Oxfordshire. Funny, I lived there for 14 years and only ever got snowed in once, when we lived literally middle of nowhere!

we're off to Yorkshire tomorrow, in hire car with 17mth old. Currently swithering between A1 & M1 route and watching weather forecast. I am tempted by the Motorway, surely they keep that clear?? Will let you know! Also bit bored of family going all professional northern on me and complaining about metropolitan news bias. No snow at home & all flights from Manchester Airport ok plus trains fine north of Peterborough. Yawn. Our intention is to move back one day but am slightly worried that my 12 years down here in that London have spolit me forever!

Anyway, I digress. Stay safe & warm wherever you end up x

    • With fibre you are paying for the speed, which is the number, yours is 300 so if you did a lot of gaming, for example, you would want the fastest possible.  If it's just office work or maybe streaming on Netflix you likely won't need as fast, but, if there are a lot of people in your house all doing their own thing on different devices, then faster speeds are better.  I don't rely on my Wi-Fi much other than when I am using my mobile.  I use Ethernet cables to connect up everything, I Have one cable running from my router, along the skirtings and through a hole I drilled in the wall to another room.  I have attached the plusnet speed guide which gives you an idea of how it works.
    • I'd reread what you posted and try to summarise.  It just comes across as a rant.
    • Just shows, to me, once proud to be a citizen of UK.. now.. well if we pay/contribute to services - nhs, police, fire etc and folk who have made this there home - no matter what creed or culture.. for the love c of God, can someone  please explain to me.. how we have working royals who like them or not, have tried and continue to actually support and make a change and then we have Andrew.. who just destroys everything.. not just him, or royalty but his own children..  I had great admiration for The Queen - and respect.. as have a huge number of people.. but.. these old traditions where gosh.. live rent free and can’t get chucked out until I believe 2070? From what I scanned..well he has and continues to have it all.. has to go thru what old rules? Etc.  doubt very much he has even kept the upkeep maintenance up on his abode.. and do the shite keeps on pulling up.. What has Andrew done for UK or for that matter since he was 20?? Do please tell me       Totally off topic, before anyone jumps down my throat.. I just do not get how anyone is proud to be British at this point in time. Whoever is in power, seems to be able to help themselves to the public purse with no redress at all - Covid is a great example of lining of pockets.. Millions  given to Rowanda, so one is led to believe, to help with refugee problem and one can’t get a plane load off!  I simply do not get it at all. Use of food banks in UK growing yearly, homeless as well, nhs, police, fire service etc all on their knees..
    • Have applied the green roof at a number of properties and no issues you are concerned about detected. Have issues with cats defecating in the vicinity, however, they are not selecting the green roof specifically. Use decent compost, slow release fertiliser specific for green roofs, and lay it methodically not leaving blank patches. It looks amazing when cared for and adds value.
