Off to hospital this afternoon to see a friend's child who's been taken in with suspected appendicitis. Haven't time to get to a bookshop, obviously sweets not appropriate; I'm a bit out of touch with these things, could anyone suggest magazines (preferably stocked by DKH Sainsbury's as passing it on the way) that would be a hit with a bright, literate six-year-old girl? Any tips gratefully received!

Thanks,

Rendel

So far as I know you can only get it on subscription, not in shops?

I agree it's a great magazine for kids.

Rendel, you could ask the girl's parent/s for suggestions? Otherwise you could duplicate something she has already been given?

Agree. Whenever I have to buy a sprog a present I always ask their parents first, they usually know what their children like...

I think it's being sold up in the dulwich picture gallery shop at the moment.

Yes quite right, usually would, but they're so traumatised at the moment - taking it in turns to sleep by her bed for the last week (it's been a bit more complex than originally thought) that they haven't much time to think of treats! Thanks again for all the kind suggestions, much appreciated.

    • Couldn't agree more with these great reviews for Paul and his colleague Damian. We had an issue in which our earth and live wires had been installed the wrong way and Damian fixed it quicky and for a really reasonable price. Would definitely use again
    • I had this problem. The only way I could resolve it was by phoning the number of the letter. I was set up over the phone having already registered for an account. The instructions on the letter are not correct as a code needs to be inputted. I do now have my permit.
    • A friend of mine was into "skill swap" about 40 years ago. It wasn't within an organised scheme, she just offered services like help with painting in exchange for services received. She upset some people as they carried out their services for a living, I.e. for money. An organised scheme sounds much better.
    • Gosh, that is a blast from the past.  Friends in York were into this, he was an accountant and had things like decorating done in exchange.  Not sure if it was equivalent in terms of hours, and I recall HMRC being interested as it was a way of tax avoidance.   A link for a London wide scheme but have no idea of its popularity: https://www.londonwide.letslink.org/members/index.php
