He has also been reading the Swallows and Amazons books. I found them too wordy to read aloud but he enjyed.

Also read the Dark Materials Trilogy and didn't seem to suffer any emotional damage!

he is 8 but reading 11+ books so not sure all the material is appropriate

Just ordered from BookPeople the HIVE books

the first fantasy series i read was by tad williams 'memory sorrow and thorn' which from memory i think would be ok for an 8 yo who is ahead of his reading age.

i was the same and always reading as a child, i think a lot of stuff i read if it was too old for me just went over my head e.g. i was reading a lot of stephen king and vc andrews at about age 11 or 12 and the saucy stuff just didn't register.

I would not give an 8 year old Phillip Pullman even if they are a fantastic reader - totally spoils it for later when they can appreciate the very adult themes of the book. There are so many brilliant books for this age. Diana Wynn Jones is amazing. Julia Golding 'Diamond of Drury Lane', the Ingo books, anything by Cornelia Funke, Roman mystery series etc. I speak as someone who had a very precocious reader and as a teacher. Don't make them run before they can walk - even amazing readers need to read inside their age band. Older books normally have themes unsuitable, or difficult for younger children to relate to. I found the 8-10 age quite difficult in terms of this, but there are loads of books out there if you look hard enough.

Muppet, he just picked up Phillip Pullman, my copy, after

I had ummed and ahhed and decided it was a bit too 'dark '

As for not fully appreciating it, sure he can read it again

Later

It is a difficult age ... Suite far from

Puberty and many books are clearly aimed at young teens

Books aimed at 7/9 are clearly very SHORT, slim

Volumes and large print, he isn't very interested because he reads quickly (like me) and one book doesn't even

Last a short journey

Do ideas for books for 10-12 yo

That have suitable content, much appreciated

Preteen 'girl's' fiction is a genre i don't much lie the look

Of

Ps it would be worse if he were a girl!
