Michael Palaeologus
The immediate past of my partment block was that of a Ford Garage, before then, who knows? I am haunted by the spirits of past Anglias' and Cortinas'.My previous flat was built on a bomb site which an aged neighbour told me was a chip shop. The Germans bombed our chip shop, literally. Jeremy
Michael Palaeologus Wrote:-------------------------------------------------------> I am haunted by the spirits of past Anglias' and Cortinas'.I've seen some imaginative use of the apostrophe over the years, but this one is truly special. Well done Mike! Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/15586-this-old-house/page/3/#findComment-410036 Share on other sites
HAL9000
Actually, apostrophe misplacement is a well-known symptom of haunting by past Anglia's and Cortina's spirits. HAL9000
Unless there's more than one of each, in which case read: haunting by past Anglias' and Cortinas' spirits.Thankfully, I've only owned one of each in the past - never again. Vik
I do often wonder about the history of mine and my mums homes, I would love to know the original layout of our Victorian terrace, it's been messed with beyond all recognition over the years and it's a pretty unique shape. little things make me wonder about previous residents - the old coal hole and fireplaces, the big butler sink in the basement. The flat I grew up in is in Honor Oak near the ED boarder and a Victorian conversion in a huge building. We were told it used to be a school but I think* I found it to have been designed to be apartments from day one, ignorant of me I know but I didn't even know 'flats' were built in Victorian times. *I say 'think' as I tried to find it in the 1901 census a few years back but it appears not to have been numbered then but named so I can't be sure it was the right building. new mother
Scribe, hilarious post. O tempora o mores indeedActually, as I came down our stairs,I slipped slightly and reached for the banister, finding a very worn patch that you wouldn't normally need to hold on to. So, lots of people have slipped before?! Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/15586-this-old-house/page/3/#findComment-412703 Share on other sites
Alec John Moore
I have two maps of this area which I bought soon after I moved to ED about 5 and a half years ago. The first is dated 1868 and the second is dated 1916. The transformation is remarkable. In the earlier map Frogley, Nutfield and Holly Roads are marked along with The Lord Palmerston (PH). There's also a floor cloth factory in the middle of what is now densely packed Victorian terraces. The later map shows tram lines along LL and up Dog Kennel Hill, fascinating.
