keano77
Awaiting further details of her call with Boris Johnson this morning.Early reports are Merkel said if Germany wanted to leave the EU they could but Britain would need to leave Northern Ireland behind undern EU rules and the Republic of Ireland would have a say if NI could leave.I emphasise early reports which need clarification. Sephiroth
I know those details - what is the "putting her foot in it" comment about? There is nothing new in any of this - The GFA agreement and the unique Ireland/Situation has always been a specific problem Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/157024-brexit-view/page/147/#findComment-1374304 Share on other sites
diable rouge
If that is indeed what was said all she is doing is reaffirming the UK's commitments regarding the GFA... keano77
She?s put her foot in it because she has said, intentionally or otherwiseWe Germany could leave the EU because nobody could stop us. We can put up borders because nobody can stop us.You U.K. can?t leave the EU because we can stop you. Further, one of our smallest members with barely 5 million people can hold you U.K. with nearly 70 million people hostage. So much for your recent Supreme Court nonsense of Parliamentary Supremacy. We, the EU, will tell you what to do.(More details of the Johnson/Merkel phone call here https://news.sky.com/story/angela-merkel-tells-pm-brexit-deal-overwhelmingly-unlikely-11830601 Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/157024-brexit-view/page/147/#findComment-1374328 Share on other sites
Sephiroth
Keano - that's absolute bobbinsWhat she is saying is that "if we, Germany decide to leave the eu, we could without the problems the UK has"Not because the EU is forbidding them - but because of UK claim to Ireland. Germany doesn't have that. Thats' the comparison Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/157024-brexit-view/page/147/#findComment-1374333 Share on other sites
keano77
She might have just given Boris the loophole he?s been looking for.He should go go to the Supreme Court now and argue there?s no point asking for an extension because the U.K. can never leave the EU unless it constitutionally tears itself apart. That?ll get the white flag wavers frothing at the mouth Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/157024-brexit-view/page/147/#findComment-1374340 Share on other sites
Sephiroth
What is that a solution to?That just leaves teh Uk leaving with no deal and all of the attendant problemsProblems which people like you say aren't real now but who will blame the EU for when they transpire Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/157024-brexit-view/page/147/#findComment-1374342 Share on other sites
Sephiroth
Brexit is problematic because of what it is and what it means logistically - not because of remainers, the EU or anyone elseToo many people who voted to leave have changed their minds for the 17m number to have any validity especially given the turmoil leaving with no deal with causeIt has zero legitimacy. It doesn't need proceeding with - it needs to be stopped Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/157024-brexit-view/page/147/#findComment-1374346 Share on other sites

Sephiroth
I think if we proceed with no deal there will be riots yes - shortages of food and supplies do that to peopleIf public votes to not proceed with brexit there won't be riots, no Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/157024-brexit-view/page/147/#findComment-1374356 Share on other sites

However if certain stipulations within an Act are ?void due to impossibility? then the SC could agree that is the case.My point is although the concept is mainly to do with Contract Law, the purpose of ?forcing? the PM to write a letter requesting an extension under the Surrender/Capitulation/Humiliation Act is to prevent the U.K. leaving without a deal. However, if Merkel?s words are as reported (and that is being questioned) then the U.K. (as an indivisible entity) can never leave. Thus, there is no point in requesting an extension. An extension to what. The U.K. is trapped in the EU and can never leave. It can only leave if it jettisons NI and if it did that it would no longer be the U.K. In short, Boris would not be breaking the law because it would be impossible for a PM of the U.K. to obey it.(Can I get away with that argument M?Lud?) uncleglen
there will never be any agreement between the EU and the UK's Brexit because everything the UK wants from Brexit is NOTallowed under the rules of the EU. Now Merkel is trying to stir up trouble by saying that NI should stay in the EU customs union....sneaky or what? Brexit is making the EU machine face up to the fact that it is rubbish and does the poor people of the richer countries no good at all..the EU is a massive social and wealth distribution experiment but unfortunately it is the poorer people of the UK who have suffered most - but the majority of people of ED, and other well-off suburbs would not understand that as they have benefited greatly from the whole deal and expressed themselves with their over-privileged verbosity at every opportunity. They are useful idiots, being played, nothing more than propaganda conduits. Expect more of the same tactic until journalists start naming these 'sources'...
