I'd like to see one or two car club spaces on Grove Lane (and/or surrounding areas). I live at the Dog Kennel Hill end of the road and don't have a car, but use Streetcars from time to time. The nearest ones are almost 10 minutes away ? which can seem too far late at night and when travelling with kids. Would people living on Grove Lane support such an idea? I mentioned it to our local councillor when he came knocking a couple of days ago and he said he'd look into it.

Hi H&M,

The council officer who leads this is called Tim Walker - [email protected]

Lovely chap. Let him know if you have any other locations that you think would benefit from a Car Club car.

Hi Sue,

Lots of consultation took place at the Dulwich Community Council. Notices in newspapers and on lamp posts. I also twice posted a map of East Duwlich with where they were proposed to go.

Great scheme that I'm proud started under a Lib Dem with over 6,000 members so far in Southwark. East Dulwich has extra density of them as we think really does help give people alternatives to owning their own car.

I wouldn't have objected to the space as I think it's a great scheme, but I don't recall seeing anything on lamp posts or on the forum, and most people won't attend the Dulwich Community Council meetings.

I don't buy a local paper but I do glance through anything free which comes through the door :)) and don't recall reading anything about it.

Maybe I'm just unobservant .....

Is there anything that can be done regarding streetcars being left badly parked?

The space on Goodrich Road often has the car left half in the bay/half out taking up twice as much space - am sure the council would be quick to ticket anyone in a private car breaching the border, but can action be taken for this (especially as it must be completely traceable who the last driver was).

Sue you can't expect people to come and kneel at your door. If you want to know what's going on in your community, go to the Community Council, that's what it's there for.

If you can't be bothered to go or obtain the minutes then whingeing is ridiculous.

Bit mean there Huguenot. There's no hint in Sue's post of a complaint - she simply said that she hadn't been aware of any notification. Not everyone is able to attend community meetings due to the time of day that they are held.

It wasn't a matter of "knowing what's going on in my community", it was a matter of knowing/being informed about something going on in my specific road.

How do I obtain the minutes of the Community Council? And where are the dates and agenda advertised? There's little point in having such a Council if members of the community in question don't know about it, or don't know what matters will be discussed at each meeting.

I don't have time to attend meetings on the off-chance that there may be something relevant to my life being discussed!

To be fair though Sue, if having one Car Club car prevents the need for several households from having to own a car each and having to park them on an already congested stretch of residential road I think I'd just let them get on with implementing it.

It's all available on the Southwark website - http://www.southwark.gov.uk/info/200137/community_councils

I wasn't intending to object, I just think residents of the road should be consulted where a parking space is being taken away.

Just because a Car Club space appears doesn't mean suddenly several households in the road will give up their cars and join the Car Club!

Sorry Sue, I was trying to intone light-hearted mock exasperation.

What with big councils, little councils, lamposts, newspapers, public, private and popular websites I wasn't sure what else a community team could do to engage with their demanding public other than a barber shop quartet?

Or a car club streaker.

A few times....

Just in case anyone missed it ;-)

No, but having an alternative may make those who would have otherwise bought a car join the club instead.

1. Put it on lampposts in the road in question (you mention lampposts, but there have been no notices about it on any lampposts in my road that I've seen - and I'm the sort of sad person who would have stopped and read them :)) )

2. Put leaflets through the doors of the road in question

3. Knock on doors of of the road in question and talk to residents

4. Put leaflets under windscreen wipers of cars in the road in question

5. Put in free newspapers delivered to the road, rather than local papers which people actually have to pay for (and anyway you would have to buy every copy to be sure of seeing it)

6. Put a thread on the East Dulwich Forum.

To the best of my knowledge, none of the above were done.

As I say, I'm not against the car club space at all, far from it (though I haven't seen a car club car actually using it for a very long time). I just don't think the consultation methods used were sufficient except for people already involved in attending council meetings.

You forgot...

7. Print the council minutes in braille and personally deliver them to all known blind people

8. Install an induction loop near the proposed space for deaf people to hear the minutes

8. Produce a podcast of the minutes available for download on iTunes

9. Advertise on all existing Streetcars that 'A space was being considered in xxx road. If you mind this then text xxxxx' (or something along those lines)

10. A radio broadcast on Magic, Kiss FM, Radio 1/2/3/4/5, Talk Sport, Absolute Radio, Smooth FM, Classic FM and LBC detailing all locations of the minutes and promoting the podcast. Ah, better do it for all the digital stations just to be safe.

11. Offering a 'Dial-a-ride' service for those that dont have a car and want to use the scheme but don't have the necessary personal mobility to be able to hear/view the minutes so they can be driven to an appropriate reading/listening point

There. I think that covers it :))

*Edited to include point 12 - Engage the employee on the Customer Service desk by telling them that you plan to make an extremely large purchase and need at least ?100 in one pound coins for all the trolleys and accost the Sainsbury's tannoy system on a Saturday morning to announce all locations of the minutes

Sue, I hear what you're saying, but somehow I suspect that even if both your own and jaybee's excellent recommendations were implemented that you still wouldn't have seen them.

Just as a guide for me, you understand, could you possibly calculate how many people, man hours and other people's cash you'd like to pee up a wall in order to satisfy your stampy-footed demands?

I think for a carclub space maybe we could really thrash out 60 grand, no?

For 3,000 carclub spaces we could crap out a cool 180 million quid yeah? FABULOUS investment for a local council.

*silly*

Doesn't the lack of a car in the space suggest that it is a really popular service that is always booked out, thereby suggesting that there is indeed local demand?

What a nice person you are.

Just notices on lampposts in the road affected, or leaflets to residents, would have been sufficient.

Stampy-footed? I think not.

  • 2 weeks later...

This really is quite trivial. The facts are:

1. There's too many cars on the roads

2. If supplying one saves 15 households requiring their own then thats a good thing

3. We can presume most rational people won't object to a scheme promoting fewer cars on the roads. No notices needed.

Bingo.

    • It doesn't matter what channel it was on, how pernicious the subject is and when it happened. Mis-representing the truth in broadcast is not only morally wrong, it's against the OFCOM code of ethics.  Everyone in the industry is trained in how not to do it, most are made to take the BBC's own 'Safeguarding the Trust' course, even if they aren't making BBC programmes.  There wasn't much fuss at the time, because no one knew about it.  "Unless you hate Britain, hate liberals, hate the BBC, want a divided country, support the most powerful person in the world despite his many failings". What the programme makers personally think or feel should never affect how they tell a story; to do so is deeply unprofessional and a sackable offence.  It's the job of the BBC and of all programming to inform viewers of the facts and let them make up their own minds. Even in campaigning documentaries.
    • Hadn't realised that the Panorama programme that people are up in arms about was over a year ago.  There wasn't much fuss at the time so why drag it up.  Unless you hate Britain, hate liberals, hate the BBC, want a divided country, support the most powerful person in the world despite his many failings. The programme was clumsy, but the vast majority of us know that Trump had an influence.  So the Telegraph has played into his hands.
    • I tried a Lime bike once, too heavy and bulky for me but I understand that many really like them.  And very much support the concept.
