Tell me about it, *Bob*! It's a real tragedy. No longer can an honest, taxpaying gent walk into a local drinking house and spend an afternoon watching a group of drunken Irishmen shouting at the horse racing on the tele, pausing momentarily to murmur to one another, then chuck a couple of fivers and some loose change into a crumpled old hat on the floor.

Now it's all gone wi-fi and continental urinal cakes. One can only despair at today's licensed travesties.

Narnia, even if you could provide me with a herd of excitable drunks from the backwoods of Munster, you'd still be unable to achieve the desired atmosphere that accompanies any crowd of paddies getting pissed indoors - an inpenetrable cloud of cigarette/cigar/pipe/Union Jack smoke.

Thanks for the offer, though.

You've not been in The Castle then.

I seem to recall one or two that were inadvisably thorough in the past.

Bedford, Echidna, Tup, Moon Under Water, Puzzle, Alan Devonshire, George, Pitcher & Piano, Oxygen (?), Windmill, Frog & Forget-me-not, Rose & Crown, Sun springs to mind.

I seem to also recall that January 2nd was a really really bad day!!!!

Haha, if you hadn't brought that one up, I'd never have remembered it again. Burnt into the synapses of my long term memory, the experience was simply menacing my other thoughts, without ever truly letting on what it was.

Did you really remember all of them, or did you have to look a few up?

I have two pipes, but I seem to have lost my Church's slippers somewhere.

    • These very anti social fireworks went on for at least fifteen years and were unbearable for both humans and pets.    Was extremely relieved that they moved a couple of years ago.  Never experienced such close proximity loud fireworks before.   But the ones that go off in the middle of the night are also very upsetting and annoying.
    • Not they've gone. Everything has been ripped out. No sign of anyone new yet.
    • The frequency of fireworks seems to be increasing. If revellers selected the low noise variety that would help, but the trend seems to be the louder the better. I do not think sensitivity to stimuli is the same as timidity. Unexpected, extremely loud bangs and unusual noises will startle most of us. Humans, unlike other animals, have the luxury of knowing what fireworks are and what the noise represents. Some animals do learn to cope but many do not. It could be their hearing is not as sensitive. We should not forget that many animals, including cats and dogs have hearing that is much more developed than ours.
