Baby boy has sticky, slightly red, itchy eyes. Yup eye infection time - surprised it took so long.

No appointment at GP and am trying to remember whether they prescribe basically same eye drops they would give an adult - variant of Optrex infected eyes?

Can I get something over the counter? My eyes are having similar symptoms minus stickiness

Hi there

Maybe this link will help - http://www.pregnancy-info.net/breastfeeding_illness.html

I remember this information was shared with my NCT run antenatal class. Could you perhaps get a telephone appointment with your gp if you can't get a face to face appointment to ensure all is okay before trying it out?

Get well soon!

The drops are meant I believe for bacterial conjuntivitis. If he's got a bad cold, it could just be coming out through his eyes i.e. it's viral or just general cold gunk. Our GP advised just bathing in cooled boiled water (or other similar soothing solution, I guess) till it was over, probably when the cold passes.

Having tried getting drops in a baby's eyes, I always try this first if the LO has a cold at the same time as it's MUCH less hassle.

You can't by chloramphenical over the counter for babies but it can be prescribed by GP. Would def advise trying br/milk first as well as cleaning the eyes with boiled & cooled water using fresh cotton wool ball for each sweep (& sweeping from inner corner outwards). Be careful after bathing/cleaning that you don't dry the eyes with the same towel/bit of towel to avoid cross infection.
We've just been afflicted. Yep - chlorophenical. Got given the option of ointment or drops. We plumped for ointment as it stays in longer (and have become an expert in administration). It cleared up in two days - and it's not like antibiotics when you have to finish the course. Phew - glad that one's over (for now).

    • St.Christopher's never says no! Adult shop, anyway
    • It's such an uneven provision, I live just west of E Dulwich towards Herne Hill/Dulwich Village and there are four Post Office counters within 10 mins walk max. They are all in local shops and provide a great service.
    • Wanted to come on and do a review for DRJ Builders as I know how hard it is to find good quality and reliable builders in the area! David O'Brien and DRJ Builders are more than that - they are an absolutely brilliant building firm who we can highly recommend. We used them to do a side return extension, loft extension and full house renovation in 2016. They did such a great job, we have just used them again to add on a new rear extension to the ground floor in 2025. David is great to work with from start to finish and has a fantastic team of tradespeople who always deliver a very high standard of work. Would highly recommend them. You can get David on 07960 938621.
    • They do have other lockers where you can drop off parcels, as well as some shops who will take them. If you use the Royal Mail app, or website, you can also arrange for collection of parcels from your house. The service is actually pretty good (and a lot easier than going to the post office). There are a lack of Royal Mail lockers though. Would be good to get some more - perhaps one on North Cross road? They don't need to be outside the Post Office necessarilly.
